Don't pretend to know how good the writing for S3 will be, but I can count on Joe and Kit's performances and they both seem proud of their work on S3.

Like, most of the praise and in-depth discussion will go to the male character, but we'll throw in some bones every now and then about how much he loves and worships the female character.

A gay variant of this can sometimes happen with Nick and Charlie, so I get why people are currently hyping up how good of a boyfriend Charlie is in return.

The current discussion has more to do with a user who made a viral thread criticizing Alice and her writing. They came for Charlie and said he couldn’t do anything by himself and Nick was the shining armor, “perfect boyfriend”. I think fans are trying to defend Charlie.

The episode works without it but it would've still been extra flavour. Kind of cements some discussion we had further back that David seems to associate himself and his dad with traditional masculinity, so he's all about bonding with their dad over things like sports and probably girls.

I recall Kit mentioning that he and Jack talked about Nick and David, coming to the conclusion that David has complexity even through the homophobia/biphobia. They might get to do more with this in S3. Also curious to see if they keep the scene with David being an insensitive prick to Charlie about eating disorders when they're talking alone at Christmas and Nick steps in.

Ben is really written to be somewhat sympathetic in s2 and I was still left pretty cold by his apology to Charlie and was glad Charlie rejected it. Joe just bodied him in that scene/all scenes. Speaking of age difference: the scene in R467, I watch it and know Joe is Six Months Older than Kit but they really sell that Nick is two years older than Charlie. The way Charlie is a little embarrassed about his parents never letting him have alcohol, Nick smiling and slyly telling him that his parents aren't there now.

R474 also think there’s the possible tendion of Sarah overall being wonderful but having her flaws. Not doing enough to shut down David bullying Nick, but also making it clear how much closer she is to Nick. The bullying is unforgivable but the dynamic of being an angry kid who misses his dad and lashes out a bit but can also clearly tell his mother prefers his younger brother could be really interesting and nuanced. Because it’s Alice she won’t ever develop any actual interesting dynamics even though the contrast of Nick, David, and Sarah (played by 3 of the stronger actors in the show) versus Charlie, Tori, and their parents (again two of the stronger actors in the show, and the parents seem good too) could be a great season 4 plot point of both families navigating tensions and traumas bubbling over

R475 It's a shame because the show is pretty much there to build on dynamics Alice doesn't have time to explore in the comics. Usually this is a good thing and it's one reason most prefer the show, but episode 3 could've probably trimmed some of the Tao/Elle drama to make room for the Nick and David scene. I'm glad Joe got his 1v1 scene with Olivia but it would've been even better with the Nick and David context.

And I do unfortunately think it's the only downside of Olivia playing Sarah, because they might never be able to do too much there for a familial arc. But they could at least expand Nick and David's arc in relation to their mum even if Sarah has to be off-screen most of the time. Would mirror the upcoming expansion of Tori in S3, too.

I like Sarah being flawed and noticed a lot of YouTube reactors being like "Olivia, no!!!" when she focused more on David's swearing over his homophobia, it was funny. But very real and as much as I love the coming out scene, I don't expect Sarah to always be on that level of saying the right thing.

Then in reverse Tori and Charlie basically realizing that their mother is always the bad cop but that their dad enables her by being nicer but not ever telling her to back off. It’s a shame because all that stuff is age appropriate, pretty relatable to many people, and better than “imogens sapphic awakening” but alas

Also I know Alice wrote Tori as not going to uni in solitaire but either changing that or giving her some alternative path that’ll take her away from Kent the next year would also add more depth to the Nick and Charlie fight and resolution and leave room for some great Jenny and Joe scenes. Charlie feeling like he’s losing the two biggest supports in his life all at once but like he isn’t allowed to be sad about it both because he’s so down on himself and also because they’re leaving for good things for them so he feels selfish. That coupled with Nick trying to develop a stronger sense of self and realizing a clean slate where he’s not just the rugby lad in Leeds would do it and expressing that excitement, which Charlie then internalizes or sees externally as him pulling away. And eventually lashing out and regretting it.

I finally got to listen to the interview and Joe actually sounded very touched when Marc gave him the big speech about his impact. I didn’t find that transition into Heartstopper talk to be awkward at all. Also thought Joe moved very naturally between himself and Kit discussing the impact of Heartstopper to the whole cast discussing it. Marc interviewed him during S1 press two years ago, so I think that helped make it feel sincere and conversational. Like a genuine catch-up talk of holy shit, look at everything that's happened since we last spoke.

It's cute that Joe mentioned Tobie during his story about seeing Next to Normal together. They both left it an emotional mess and talking about how they want to do something like that, so I'd call that more evidence of Tobie being suited for future musicals.
