Beyonce has a history of claiming she wrote songs she never wrote including Irreplaceable (written by Ne-Yo), Bow Down (the real songwriter originally wrote it for Rihanna) and even went on a radio show to claim she wrote Destiny Child's Emotions which was actually written by the BEE GEES.
This is why she'll never win AOTY. Everyone in the industry knows she doesn't write shit. Diane Warren even called her out for it.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 19, 2024 3:14 PM |
Nobody believes Beyoncé wrote anything. She can’t even read and she’s dumber than dirt.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 19, 2024 3:16 PM |
Song-writing credits are just a business deal. You can have 100% credit for writing a song, but until a famous artist records it, you get nothing. So to the extent she’s complaining about the money, I have little sympathy.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 19, 2024 3:20 PM |
She's not an artist, she's a performer. If you locked her up in a room by herself with a pen, paper, and guitar she wouldn't be able to come up with anything.
Despite the pretentious image she puts out of a serious artiste she's just as manufactured as Britney and Bieber. And just as dumb as them too.

So I actually watched this young lady’s video and she articulated her point well and she is right actually. These songwriters are being exploited. I just want to point out that she has never worked with the Queen. The Queen pays her songwriters, she just demands as much as 25% for songs that were completed and sometimes demoed before she had any involvement. That shit is fucked up and it is low key why she isn’t as respected as all her acclaim would seem to suggest when it’s comes to. The Grammys, particularly album of the year. I’ve been telling my friends that.
Taylor Swift doesn’t worry about this drama because she generally writes all her own shit or co-writes them with only 1 or 2 collaborators. This woman is not lying about how these billionaire artists are exploiting people because that’s exactly what the fuck it is. She made an excellent argument. Queen Bey has the power and influence to enact the change. She should and if she doesn’t I will stop calling this bitch Queen Bey.

R4 is right: It's not as if "these poor songwriters" are being ripped off. Part of the deal of getting your song on an album is for the artist to claim (s)he co-wrote the song.
Why? Because that way the performer will also get paid whenever someone else wants to cover / sample / use the song.
This isn't something the songwriter only finds out when they read the credits: This is all taken care off well in advance by the record companies, signed by all parties and/or their handlers.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 19, 2024 3:35 PM |
R11 It's still an unfair practice. Most of the time they agree to those deals because they’re new and don’t have other means to join a tight-knit industry, they don’t have the money to pay for lawyers to continually assist with contract, the large labels and their "artists" have a chokehold on the industry, you either work with them or you don’t work at all.
The industry is set up to exploit the vulnerable.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 19, 2024 3:38 PM |
If you agree to give up part of your publishing, that's one thing (and not something I agree with, but this is the way they do business). However, why does that artist deserve songwriting credits? Why can't they just own a percentage of the publishing and be non-credited? That's the part that would gall me. I understand I have to give up something for an established artist to record one of my songs, but they didn't write it. The first part is greedy enough, but to then want songwriting credit for which you could win awards you don't deserve... how do people live with themselves? I would never want to take credit for something I had no hand in.

When you log into ASCAP as a writer, you have data on who's recorded your song, number of plays etc and you want those cents on the dollar. That's the evidence entertainment lawyers use. She can admit her 'inspiration' by giving credit in the first place to the writer, or go to court as a thief.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 19, 2024 3:48 PM |
These songwriters agree to give Beyoncé credit because she has a reputation for getting people blacklisted in the industry who are a threat to her. She and her husband are thugs.

Movie screenwriters also get screwed. The entertainment industry just doesn’t value writers.
At least movie writers generally don’t have their credits stolen, because they have a strong union.
The recording industry should separate out publishing rights from writing credit so recording artists and producers can share in the revenues without pretending to be songwriters.

Linda Perry called her out a couple of years ago too.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 19, 2024 5:25 PM |
R36 Linda Perry, who is high functioning autistic, slam that one of her songs had 20 songwriters. That’s because the black and white nerd doesn’t understand that when you sample a song or interpolate it EVERY songwriter from the original song is listed. Innovative hip hop often uses samples with entirely new lyrics and arrangements. Even if you only sample one part of the song. For example Crazy in Love has entirely original lyrics however the iconic horns are sampled from the Chi-lites—meaning every single writer from the Chi-Lite’s ‘Are you gonna be my girl ‘ is listed on Crazy in Love’s songwriter lyrics. I don’t think that was the song Linda was referring to but that’s just example. The cool, forward thinking songwriters like Mark Ronson know this and don’t hate. Linda should stick to writing them trite lyrics on romantic ballads. She has had a handful of good ones; most trash.
A poster above mentioned there should be more of distinction between songwriting and publishing. I suspect he is a musician or songwriter himself and he is correct. That’s where this problem is. Unlike screenwriters of a film, songwriters get royalties for life.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 19, 2024 5:33 PM |
My point is the Chi-lite’s Are you gonna be my girl wrote not one lyric on Crazy in Love but are listed as songwriters because of the horn sample. Some of you don’t understand a song is lyrics plus melody not just lyrics. But the problem arises in production when a singer is not singing the melody or the lyrics of the samples song but only using the instrumentation and engineering.

R40 Posting random song lyrics without the overall melody and even the songs instrumentation is very simple minded. It’s akin to posting a the screenplay of scene from a film in which a pimp is cussing out his hoe or the violent criminal turns on his comrades. It’s quite well idiotic.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 19, 2024 7:33 PM |
Beyonce writes more than Rihanna, who doesn't write anything. Rihanna's vocals are also produced for her by Kuk Harrell, while Bey does her own vocals. Rihanna just shows up in the studio, picks some songs that she likes by other writers and sings along to a track with vocals already laid out for her by Harrell. She's about as involved in her music as Britney was.
Having said all that, I'd much rather listen to Rihanna's music than Bey's.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 19, 2024 7:36 PM |
That must be why her music is so bad now. She can’t get the best material anymore because creators are tired of being robbed. No one really listens to her anyway. Rihanna’s last album, from EIGHT YEARS AGO, is performing better on streaming services than Beyoncé’s from last year, or whenever.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 19, 2024 7:43 PM |
I have no sympathy for her. As someone said above, it takes the artist to get the song recorded and the artist basically pushes and sells the song and because of their shitty recording contracts, a lot of them get fucked over.

R55 Yeah the streams for Lemonade are terrible considering all the media hype about it being one of the best albums of all time. A lot of Beyonce's career is smoke and mirrors. The streams for Anti are insanely good considering it came out in 2016. Anti is a better album than Beyonce's Lemonade too.

by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 19, 2024 7:49 PM |
There need to be laws and regulations put into place in order to end this once and for all. But since the system was broken from the start and the ones who broke it are the only ones benefitting from it then it is highly unlikely anything will change.
Yes the artist picked the song, recorded it, released it and made it a hit but that doesn't make them one of the songwriters or entitle them to a share of someone else's earnings. It's a very narcissistic and entitled mindset.
It's a damn shame that it's been 80 years since singers and songwriters went on strike while writers and actors in Hollywood go on strike almost once every decade or every other decade.

Publishing is where all the money is. Facts. Being Beyonce is expensive y’all.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 19, 2024 8:43 PM |
Here is how it works. Songs are submitted to artists. Big-name artists can put a hold on them (most likely the management and artists). If they like a song or demo, and they are a big enough name, they can tell the writer we will take your song, you will get paid and get x% of the publishing rights if we get a writing credit on the song. No credit, no deal. (This is in fact how Beyonce works). To make it nice and legal, they will change a word or phrase in a song. Take the song Smash into You on I am Sasha Fierce. It was originally titled Smack into You as in the like I want to run smack into you, the Chorus of the song. It was supposed to go to another artist but he was a smaller fish. The writers gave up their writing credit to Beyonce because they thought it had greater potential to make money from an artist who sells millions vs an artist who sells thousands.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 19, 2024 8:43 PM |
I don't see a problem with big stars getting a percentage of the publishing because without them the song wouldn't be a hit. That's a business deal that many writers would be willing to accept. It can be part of the contract. But why do the "artists" insist on pretending they wrote the song? Taking a percentage of the money is a business deal. Taking writing credit is a slimy, egocentric fraud.
All Beyonce knows how to do is lip-synch and walk around with faux attitude.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 19, 2024 8:53 PM |
R62 you are the idiot. Neither of the artists you named were widely known to blatantly steal songwriting credits. That is why Beyoncé will never win AOTY. She plays dirty and the people she need to vote for her know it.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 19, 2024 9:06 PM |
Beyonce is a great performer. She is one of the best. I don't need her to pen her songs. I want to watch her and enjoy what she brings to a song. I don't care if it was written by 1000 other people. I want to see her sing and perform it. Half of the enjoyment of most songs nowadays is the performance and the emotion brought to the song by the performer.
The industry has been the same for close to 100 years. It seems as if someone getting into the business of songwriting would know this. And if they know this and are truly talented, they write for other people AND themselves. The produce talent AND themselves. That is where the money is. If you're a song writer that can't sing or play an instrument, I would suggest just taking your lumps or get out of the business.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 19, 2024 10:02 PM |
R67 Then why does she need to proclaim to write songs that she never wrote? That is narcissism. No one would care if she just sang the songs other people made for her but taking credit for coming up with other people's ideas is disgusting.

There has to be more to publicly saying you wrote an album than just ego. All the artist do it. Maybe it goes toward better contracts for future albums. Maybe if they take as much credit in the credits they have to actually say it. Madonna said it all the time and you queens sucked at her tits for decades without saying a word. Everyone does it. You guys are completely out of touch, which is understandable considering the median age on here. Beyonce or whoever wrote her lyrics, has had songs with phrases that have entered the popular vernacular. "If he liked it he would have put on ring on it," "I woke up like this," "watermelon," "surfbort," "hot sauce in my bag," "who runs the world?" Everyone who isn't ancient knows why "Imma take his ass to Red Lobster," means. The woman singlehandedly made Going to Red Lobster a thing. It may be a bunch of noise to you but she has risen to the gold standard of what a performer can be, and she has a huge impact on popular culture. You may not like her. Like I don't like Taylor Swift. But I'd be lying if I was trying to minimize her impact on popular American culture, or culture all around the world. At least base your arguments in reality.
And Rihanna is popular because she has a better catalog than Beyonce with more number one hits. Whoever upthread said she just had Umbrella is just lost in the Sauce. Rude Boy, We Found Love, Only Girl in the World, Stay, Diamonds and SOS were all memorable, massive hits. Just because you can't remember them says more about your memory than the actual truth.
And people like Rihanna better than Beyonce, because Rihanna never sold herself as anything other than what she was, she never tried to be nice. She's real and says what she thinks. Although it was kind of mean, it is still hilarious to me that she commented "Booo" under some girls instagram photo of a dress she made for her prom to look like Rihanna. The dress did look like shit.

None of these with the exception of the first one has ever been a "thing."
But let's say, for argument's sake, they have. This is something to be proud of, the further dumbing down of the nation? Yeah, good going, Bouncy. The public is now almost as retarded as you are.

R96 I'm 29 years old, those are phrases only Millennials and people my age would know. Nobody under the age of 24 gives a fuck about Beyonce. My youngest sister is 16 and the only Beyonce song she knows is Break My Soul (probably because its from her latest album). Beyonce is a Millennial thing.
But you're right Rihanna is more likable simply due to the fact that she doesn't have an annoying PR machine hyping her up as some genius. Her music was played at every college party I went to.

Rihanna looks like Wil Smith.

I'll always have a soft spot for her, because as a child I was Destiny's child fan, but had no idea she had ever claimed to have written "Emotions"
😂😂😂😂😂
Is she really that stupid?

R105 The Queen isn’t stupid at all. She stated, quite garishly, that she cowrote every track on the Survivor album but that’s impossible because it featured a cover of Samantha’s Emotions written and produced by the BeeGees. Again occasionally she used to do chicken head shit.
The Queen’s country soul anthem has debuted at #2 on the main charts and #1 on the Country charts. She is one of the greatest.

This is why she doesn't give interviews. Wendy Williams called her out on her inability to talk years ago.

You're an embarrassment. And I'm not even Black (nor do I play one on DL like you do.)

R108 But I don’t do that love.

But what does Kelly Rowland think?
by Anonymous | reply 110 | February 21, 2024 8:36 PM |
Kelly is too busy looking for a suitable dressing room to pay attention, R110. She needs to bring an advocate like Jay-Z to her talk show appearances.
