“A Quiet Place: Day One”

This prequel looks AMAZING!

I dunno. It’s going to be like every other alien invasion movie. Everyone running around in a panic, buildings blowing up and lots of CGI. Lately I’ve liked movies that deal with afterwards, after the chaos subsides, and how the characters survive in their new reality.

Aw Emily is not in this.

I thought it looked good too until I realized we already know what happens next.

New York Times writes the cat is the star of the film.

This was enjoyable although aspects of the initial aftermath were not how I'd imagine them to be.

Lupita was brilliant and looked amazing on the big screen.

That's all really.

I saw it yesterday going in having read nothing about it.

I thought it was really good, maybe less nerve wracking than the previous two, but more moving. Instead of survivors turning on one another and becoming an even bigger threat, people banded together and tried to help in a dire crisis.

SPOILER ALERT: there is also a cancer storyline that fits quite well into the plot and ends up being the emotional core of the film.

There is also a good tie-in to Part II with Djimon Hounsou and the safety found in water.

Yes, the cat is a fucking star, but Lupita Nyong’o carries the movie as the lead and is bolstered by the cute British actor Joseph Quinn, who played the doomed stoner in Stranger Things.

I really recommend it if you liked the first two.

Just saw it. A snooze, playing the cancer card to emotionally blackmail the audience into rooting for a heroine who wants to have her Last Day In New York at any cost.

A real missed opportunity, especially for those of us hoping for some expansion of the concept -- more idea of where the creatures came from, perhaps? -- or a richer look at what went down in the first days. (As it is, everyone figures out really quickly that they need to stay quiet . . . while Lupita's character is conveniently unconscious.)

Best of all: the adorable cat doesn't meow ONCE. Christ, even Jonesy in the first 2 ALIEN pictures did that.

Agree with r6!

I’m with you, R9. Loved the first two and was really excited for this. Wasn’t at all what I wanted it to be. Expected to see a lot more of how it unfolded, how they pieced together the need to stay quiet (the newspapers in the first movie made it sound like that was an epiphany that took a few days), etc.

This had the modern stylistic choice of dark lighting. I couldn't see what was going on half the time. Making the heroine so unlikeable is a bad choice. Why should we care what happens to her then? And all the times she abandoned her cat. I know cats like to be independent, but I didn't think they have the same tracking skills as dogs. That cat sure was smart.

I saw the movie properly on a big IMAX screen and thought the visual palette was rich and perfectly legible.

I enjoyed is thematic departure from the first two, which are about the lengths we will go to protect our family. This one, instead, is about confronting death. The common thread is an underestimated female (Millicent Simmonds’ deaf teen in the first two, Lupita here) who’s stronger and more resilient than anybody thinks.
