The ugly wide-legged mom jeans trend

When is it going to end?

It's HIDEOUS.

When gen alpha brings back skinny jeans and gladiator sandals

by Anonymousreply 1February 4, 2024 10:10 AM

Huge butt jeans are not for me.

by Anonymousreply 2February 4, 2024 10:51 AM

I haven't seen mom jeans forever, are they still a thing?

by Anonymousreply 3February 4, 2024 10:55 AM

R3: Mom jeans came back BECAUSE of Gen Z. They like it because it hides their fat! And they are extremely fat! F-A-T!

by Anonymousreply 4February 4, 2024 11:01 AM

^ Ok, being a Gay man the last thing I look at is middle-aged women 😬

by Anonymousreply 5February 4, 2024 11:12 AM

r4 I notice super skinny girls and twinks in them all the time. It's just the trend.

by Anonymousreply 6February 4, 2024 11:15 AM

Finally finally skin tight bottoms and leggings might be on the wane

by Anonymousreply 7February 4, 2024 11:17 AM

R5: The women wearing mom jeans are young women. Gen Z.

by Anonymousreply 8February 4, 2024 11:23 AM

Skinny boys in high-waisted, high-water elephant bells are a hit on campus. The medieval bowl cut is the cerise sur le gateau.

by Anonymousreply 9February 4, 2024 11:41 AM

I haven’t seen jeans much at all. The women I see in the Midwest all wear leggings with ugly prints because there is no way they can get a pair of jeans to zip up and button around their ‘curves.’

by Anonymousreply 10February 4, 2024 11:47 AM

OP, couldn't agree more.

Brooke knows how an older gal should wear jeans:

I drive by crowds of high school zoomers every day and no fatties anywhere. Haven't noticed baggy jeans either.

by Anonymousreply 12February 4, 2024 12:38 PM

I work in a high school and they started wearing these five years ago. Not a lot of overweight students on my campus. I honestly think they are better than skinny jeans—which just looked bad on most people.

by Anonymousreply 13February 4, 2024 1:30 PM

Not something I am seeing in NY. In fact, rarely see women wearing jeans.

by Anonymousreply 14February 4, 2024 1:39 PM

@r10, This, what I see in the midwest are yoga pants with gigantic bulky tops. Still fat, but at least they try to cover some of it

What do you mean “wide legged”

Do you mean boot leg?

Do you mean flares?

Do you mean palazzo pants?

by Anonymousreply 16February 4, 2024 3:11 PM

H&M markets several wide-legged jean styles as unisex. With dudes, chicks, and gender fluids modeling the different colors.

by Anonymousreply 17February 4, 2024 3:20 PM

No, wide leg. Not flares, boot leg or palazzo.

by Anonymousreply 18February 4, 2024 4:25 PM

It is hideous but it's less hideous than the instagram/Kardashian looks all women seem to be adopting these days.

by Anonymousreply 19February 4, 2024 4:37 PM

Our 13-year-old daughter LOVES wide-legged jeans and she's tall (5'7") and skinny...just sayin'...

by Anonymousreply 20February 4, 2024 4:44 PM

Better than an over-40 stuffed into low riders.

by Anonymousreply 21February 4, 2024 8:24 PM

R19 trenchant fashion fad reporting. Nowadays, women are taking up Kardashian looks!

by Anonymousreply 22February 4, 2024 8:37 PM

OP, do you mean to complain about the pants being high waisted? As that is what mom jeans usually mean and that is what you've shown us. A picture showing the full length of the pants would be helpful.

by Anonymousreply 23February 4, 2024 9:44 PM

Wide leg jeans are awful in rainy weather.

by Anonymousreply 24February 4, 2024 10:19 PM

Is this what you're referring to, OP?

Put on your mom jeeeeans.

by Anonymousreply 26February 4, 2024 11:27 PM

I can’t wear pants that end above the ankles. Nobody makes pants for short women.
they’re all long.

by Anonymousreply 27February 4, 2024 11:30 PM

High waisted, wide leg pants look so much better on overweight women than low rise, bell bottoms, or skinny jeans/leggings

by Anonymousreply 28February 5, 2024 1:47 AM

Sure they do r27. Short or petite. Or get a good tailor or even better learn how to sew a hem.

by Anonymousreply 29February 5, 2024 2:01 AM

Just tell them they make them look fat. Gone!

by Anonymousreply 30February 5, 2024 2:26 AM

B29, how does one hem jeans? I thought you need that special sewing machine to do that.

by Anonymousreply 31February 5, 2024 5:30 AM

For a blind hem there's a special machine r31, but jean hems just need a heavy needle, double folding and either a thick and contrasting thread, or just regular thread. Most home hem jobs use the latter.

by Anonymousreply 32February 5, 2024 7:56 AM

I’ve done french seems with old Etro plaid scraps. Nobody sees it, but it’s amusing and easier than hand sewing through three layers of denim.

by Anonymousreply 33February 5, 2024 8:11 AM

You can use a regular machine

by Anonymousreply 34February 5, 2024 8:21 AM

No, you do not cut and "fold over" jean hems. A tuck is made just above the original hem in order to keep the original stitching.

by Anonymousreply 35February 5, 2024 12:11 PM

I think part of the appeal is that the baggy clothes make it very apparent how skinny you are if you're really thin, you look like a flying squirrel or something.

by Anonymousreply 36February 5, 2024 12:20 PM

[quote] Short or petite. Or get a good tailor or even better learn how to sew a hem.

Not for me. I’m 4’11 and even for a short person I have short arms and legs. The only tailor closed down due to high rents and my pants need to be cut and hemmed, not just hemmed. Basting pants with a folded under 6” hem looks bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 37February 6, 2024 2:59 AM

Oh..I also have scoliosis. My legs aren’t even and I always had to tell tailors “You can’t make a chalk mark and a couple pins in it. You have to chalk and pin the hem all the way around the leg because it dips in the back.”

When I lived in NYC I had a great tailor from Armenia who explained to me why pants never came out hemmed right for me. But the neighborhood gentrified and he got priced out years ago, poor guy. Now the local tailor where I live got priced out and he was in an old, unrenovated house. He raised his prices sky high but still couldn’t hold onto his lease.

Real estate speculators/investors suck.

by Anonymousreply 38February 6, 2024 3:06 AM

Mom jeans hides Zoomers' fatness.

by Anonymousreply 39February 6, 2024 9:27 AM

The thrift stores must be loaded with these things from the closets of grandmas who’ve passed away.

by Anonymousreply 40February 6, 2024 10:06 AM

I went to my friend's daughter's Parent's Weekend at Michigan State and almost ALL the girls were wearing the high-waisted, distressed mom jeans with a barely-there tank top or knotted/wrapped button-up shirt. I mean, almost ALL the girls were wearing this "uniform." You'd see some with the leggings and sweatpants (as "going out" attire...another tragic trend) but most had on the clone get-up. Sad too because a lot of the girls were cute. I do like how the kids are hip to vintage/thrift store finds, though. They don't seem to be label whores as much as previous generations and appreciate a good deal on clothing.

by Anonymousreply 41February 6, 2024 12:57 PM

That is true R41. Gen Z doesn’t care about labels. Millenials are the worst label whores of any generation

by Anonymousreply 42February 6, 2024 1:07 PM

[quote]When is it going to end?

Depends

by Anonymousreply 43February 6, 2024 1:33 PM

[quote] Gen Z doesn’t care about labels.

Nah. They're just going through their pretentious phase!

by Anonymousreply 44February 6, 2024 7:55 PM

Gen Z coeds have moved on from form-fitting yoga pants to baggy ‘80s style sweat pants. The Uggs and center parted hair retain their perennial status.

by Anonymousreply 45February 6, 2024 8:40 PM

Sick of seeing pot bellies and love handles when fat chicks in low riders don't wear long enough tops to cover their flab.

Can do without seeing all the chubbies in leggings that show off their butts and entire legs.

by Anonymousreply 46February 7, 2024 9:27 AM

This one ruined the long, wide-leg, high-waisted look.

Those hems dragging on the ground!
