Written/directed by Osgood Perkins. Alicia Witt and Blair Underwood also star. There have been a number of vague teaser clips released over the last month with cryptic titles, but this is the first proper trailer so far. Looks very creepy.
“Longlegs”, upcoming horror film starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage

Is it a musical?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 3, 2024 8:21 PM |
Osgood Perkins is Anthony Perkins’s eldest son—he’s made a few films. Seems to have a penchant for horror. “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” was pretty eerie I thought.

Good teaser. Makes the movie look intriguing. I’m not into horror anymore though so I won’t be watching it.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 3, 2024 10:21 PM |
I wonder who Alicia Witt is portraying in this. The black cloaked figure in this teaser almost seems like a reference to her role in “Dune.” It’s definitely her voice in the clip too. They’re building a lot of intrigue around this movie. I hope it delivers.

The posters are very off-putting (in a good way)

Didn’t he nearly go bankrupt?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 5, 2024 12:02 AM |
R7 yes, I think he was/is terrible with his money for a long time and was apparently millions in debt. I think he's cleaned it up though as of the last couple years, and has had a bit of a career renaissance. He's done a lot of very "out-there" roles in the last decade, which has sort of established him as a cult figure of sorts.
He is a producer on "Longlegs", so I think this is a personal project to him. His performance in it (he plays a serial killer) is apparently so disturbing that test audiences reported that it could alienate people from the film.

Has Osgood ever spoken of 9/11 and the loss of his mom?

Neon released the full trailer today, which is excellent. This is easily my most-anticipated movie of this year.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 21, 2024 1:18 PM |
All the actors in the cast are has-beens.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 21, 2024 2:20 PM |
So was John Travolta before Pulp Fiction r17. And Demi Moore of all people has the buzziest movie at Cannes this year. I like it when directors find new ways to use familiar faces.
I want to like Maika Monroe, she has made several outstanding horror movies / thrillers that I love, but unfortunately a friend of mine who works in PR told me she is a massive cunt and it kind of soured my burgeoning love. This was early in her career so maybe she's chilled out -- she does keep getting work.

Generally yes but Travolta is great in Pulp Fiction
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 21, 2024 3:28 PM |
R18 what did she do that was certifiably cunt? I like her as an actress and think she's great playing introverted characters. I don't know much else about her aside from some of her movies, mainly "It Follow" and "Watcher", which I both love.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 22, 2024 1:41 AM |
Osgood Perkins' movies are awful, boring and useless.
Which means Cage racks up yet another dud.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 22, 2024 1:43 AM |
R22 I disagree. I had lukewarm feelings about The Blackcoat’s Daughter the first time I saw it, but upon rewatching it years later, I found it very ominous and creepy. It’s not perfect, but the tone is so dark that it’s almost unpleasant to watch. If nothing else, I thought it was effective as a horror movie and was brimming with dread. I say this as someone who also cannot fucking stand Emma Roberts.

Alicia Witt was on KTLA this morning promoting the film. You see a brief clip from a scene between her and Maika Monroe. Looks promising to me.

I know some of you bitches wanted this movie to fail, but it is now officially certified "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. The New York Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Associated Press, Variety, The Atlantic, Entertainment Weekly, The Boston Globe—all favorable reviews. That's rare for a horror film.

He has a mop of hair and speaks in a falsetto. Is this going to be perceived by viewers as an entry into the "Killer Tranny" films of yesteryear? Not very pc. And directed by gay Anthony Perkins' son yet.

Saw the 7pm showing today and thoroughly enjoyed it. Jumped a few times. The theater was about 3/4s full on a Thursday night which is really good for my area.

Nicolas Cage as the titular nut case. His appearances are brief, but resounding — and, as can happen with Cage, waver on the brink of parody...Longlegs is an apparent victim of botched plastic surgery whom Cage plays as a rhyming-and-singing lunatic beneath a frizzed gray wig. In one amusing scene, as Longlegs enters a hardware store sporting what appear to be slippers and a housedress, he resembles nothing so much as a bizarre amalgam of Buffalo Bill and Tootsie. He should have been a breeze to catch.

Got back from a late showing of this. I was impressed and honestly riveted by most of it. I've seen "The Blackcoat's Daughter" so I sort of knew that the director's storytelling mode was not straightforward and a bit more amorphous. This movie had me totally invested, scratching my head, and wanting to know more. It totally pulled me in.
Maika Monroe was nervy and deadpan which worked for her character, and she had good chemistry with Blair Underwood. Nic Cage looked and acted insane in this. Some people are finding it humorous apparently, but I didn't think it was funny. He was hard to watch and at times made my stomach turn. Alicia Witt had a much bigger role in this than I expected. I sort of thought she was going to just be a token "crazy mom" in one or two minor scenes, but she plays a major role in the whole story and had more screen time than I anticipated. She was saying in interviews that she didn't plan on watching the film because the experience of playing the role was so intense. At first I kind of rolled my eyes, but now after seeing it, it makes sense.
The film overall was very atmospheric and eerie. Fantastic visuals. I know they shot in Vancouver, but as a native Oregonian, I can vouch that they really captured '90s Oregon authentically. The whole thing looked like it was filmed in the Willamette Valley. I need to see the movie again because there is a lot going on in it and I think it would benefit from repeat viewings.

Blair Underwood is still a Fiiiine Looking Man.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 12, 2024 10:27 AM |
I was also at a late showing tonight, r43. I liked how hard they leaned into the early 90s aesthetic. Cassette tapes, microfiche, pay phones, newspapers, giant cars with digital gages and best of all, sickly yellow light bulbs that barely illuminate. Cage was on screen for about 15 minutes and he was horrifying. He was so unsettling that the possibility of him popping suddenly put me on edge for the whole movie (especially in that barn). I really enjoyed this movie.

All suspense/thrillers should be retro. Cameras, DNA, GPS, facial recognition and tinkly cell phones just take the fun out of things.

R44 I found him very sexy in this movie. His body looked hot as fuck in his FBI slacks and dress shirts.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | July 14, 2024 9:39 PM |
R54 that review is too hyperbolic for me to take seriously. "Longlegs" is not a perfect film, but to deem it one of the worst movies of all time is insane. I also don't get why people find Cage funny in this movie. There are cartoonish elements there, but overall I found him very off-putting and at times truly scary.
The monologue he gives at the end in the interrogation room where he's staring directly into the camera was difficult for me to watch. I felt my blood run cold when he lowered his voice and was telling Monroe's character to "Bow down. Bow all the way down. And get right down to the dirty, dirty work. Work that gets dirty as it cleans, like a mop." It was fucking scary.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 16, 2024 3:04 AM |
Why is Cage still making movies? He got lucky with Peggy Sue and Moonstruck and was actually good in them. He totally sucked after that. He and Sean Penn were once good friends but that relationship shattered when Sean told Nicholas that he went on to make nothing but shitty films.

It is very creepy even though a lot of it is shot broad day light. The scene that cuts between the girl shoveling snow & the school mistresses being decapitated was just particularly creepy. But it also felt like a big build up to...meh. I wanted to like it - I hate slasher film horror- but it just didn't deliver. I hope this movie is better.

I'm certain Nicholas Cage has been inspired by Jack Smith's vocal work as Madame Nescience in Ken Jacob's brilliant underground movie Blonde Cobra. Yes, there are no visuals for a long spell in the short movie. Back in the day, you sat in the dark listening to Madame. Starts at 18 min mark.

Nicholas Cage gave one of the creepiest performances I’ve ever seen in horror. I watch a lot of horror movies and am not easily scared but parts of Longlegs made me jump. I saw it in the theatre which added to the creepiness
by Anonymous | reply 76 | August 8, 2024 5:19 PM |
R76 I agree. I am a horror diehard—I have seen most all of it spanning the decades. His performance in this was very scary. I didn’t realize how scary he was until his face-to-face with Maika Monroe’s character in the interrogation room. The way his face and voice transformed in that scene (from the cartoonish, high pitched “There she is!”) to the gruff, baritone monologue about bowing down and doing the “dirty work” made my blood run cold. It wasn’t just the voice either—the look in his eyes was terrifying.

I’m glad it did well. I enjoyed it and I am a fan of Maika Monroe.
Can someone explain to me what was so extraordinary about Cage’s performance? Tons of makeup and lots of weirdness. I thought the real performances in the film were from Monroe, Witt and Underwood. I like little Kiernan Shipka too but she is underused in the picture.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | September 2, 2024 7:45 PM |
What a pile of shit. Why did she not stop Blair Underwood from killing his wife? Why was Cage so ridiculous? Longlegs could have been really creepy but out of nowhere he would start singing or screaming and it took me completely out of the movie because you would just go (oh yeah that’s nic cage) Why did the devil lead her to catch him if he was controlling her through the doll? Why were the creepy life size dolls at the crime scenes never mentioned? So many questions...
by Anonymous | reply 83 | September 11, 2024 4:38 PM |
R40 Yes, a few of the trans think that. Imagine looking at this freaky disaster and seeing yourself, jfc. It's clear he's an aging cock rocker (glam rock, whatever you want to call it) He has Marc Bolan pics all over and Lou Reed pics, he sings all the time, he's Bret Michaels in 20 years.
R79 Oh I hated her. Why did they give her that OTT hick accent? Wasn't she from Bend, Oregon. It's like they were making fun of stupid hick accents, she was laying it on way too thick.

Perkins said in an interview that his movie themes come from a process of trying to resolve the lack of truth in the family about his father being gay. His father's and his mother's premature deaths meant that he and his brother were denied the opportunity to do so.

This movie could have been scarier, and could have been better. The protagonists were ciphers, not likable at all, I cared more about what happened to Nic Cage. Her mom was awful, and seemed to not like the girl at all so the fact she would become a serial killer for her is a real head scratcher. Why the fuck did an fbi agent not notice a random car parked at her mom's house for 20 years? Why did no one notice the weird nun in a Ted Bundy vw dropping by the victim's houses with a large package? Her graceful puking outside the first crime scene and probably others, should have yielded, dna? something.

That rex reed read was spot on. This movie was terrible. A wish.com silence of the lambs with a plot that indicates a parlor game where the writers were tasked with grafting together a randomly selected selection of plot points from paranormal activity and old Ashley Judd suspense movies from the 1090s.
Neither what longlegs was doing, why he was doing it, or why he was named longlegs made any sense.
The mothers reasons for getting and staying involved were also unclear
maika monroe appeared to be on heavy tranquilizers throughout. Her character was psychic, mainly so that the story could avoid incorporating believable detective work into the plot.
Characters enter building in the middle of the night and then the interior shots taking place seconds later feature sunlight pouring through the windows.
Clues are found and then never explained.
What was this movie and why were so many people suxkered into liking it?
