Overtalkers

Anyone else notice people who will talk right through you are on the rise and everywhere now? There is no flow in conversation, they will always deliver their entire soliloquy before you will be allowed to speak. I’ve recently noticed this in-person and on the phone, now I fuck with them and talk right over them until they stop. They’re insane.

Oh my god, welcome to the real estate industry

I grew up with an overtalker mother. Many family events were painful with her around and I could always sense the frustration my relatives had with her taking forever to get the point of things or overstating obvious things.

The older I get the less I care to hear others speak at all. People mostly have very little thoughtful to say. Silence is golden.

My mother does lots of repetition, it's quite frustrating. We heard you the first time, sweetheart. My sister is the overtalker, just endless inane details that don't matter at all. I'm too exhausted and depressed to talk much anymore, I express most all my thoughts in written form these days, here on DL and on Reddit.

I think this sort of behaviour stems from the primordial fear of death, i.e. they're scared of the silence that mirrors the silence of eternal rest.

There are some talkative people who have the gift of keeping conversations flowing well and not repeating themselves. Then you get the people who repeat the same things over and over or don't let others speak.

I've learned to say right back over them, "Excuse me, but I hadn't finished talking."

by Anonymousreply 6February 3, 2024 5:54 PM

Let them draw their barrage to a close.

Pause a moment.

Then say, "I'm usually finished listening before most people are through talking and, man, do you reinforce the wisdom of that bad habit. Now, if you would, sum up your point in just a very few words?

Sometimes people get excited and over talk before they forget their thought.

I’m guilty of this, especially when I’m speaking politics with a dense, low informed or ill-informed person. And they’re always Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 9February 3, 2024 6:16 PM

I talk to as few people as I have too, and most of them I just pretend to be friendly, I would rather everyone shut up.

When a person is talking, he feels in control. This feeling of control is especially important to insecure people, who might be insecure because they don't really know what they're talking about, or because they fear questions they can't answer. Often people who have hearing problems keep talking because they want to avoid as much as possible the anguish of trying to hear the other party. Yes, other times it's because the talker is a narcissistic person who just wants to control everything and squelch others' input. And often it's because the talker has "innocently" not developed conversational skills for one reason or another. All I'm saying is that, if we want to be judgy on this, we need to take it on a case-by-case basis to really address the situation well.

R11 an over talker

by Anonymousreply 12February 3, 2024 11:32 PM

My boss does this…a sweet man, but it gets exhausting. I’ll stop talking to let him say his piece; then he stops and we start interrupting each other all over again.

by Anonymousreply 13February 4, 2024 1:07 AM

r12 An under-thinker.

by Anonymousreply 14February 4, 2024 1:37 AM

I usually zone out after the first few words.

by Anonymousreply 15February 4, 2024 1:38 AM

It’s a compulsive disorder, similar to OCD.

by Anonymousreply 16February 4, 2024 1:51 AM

The "word salad" people are terrible. They say a lot of nothing.
