Michael Shannon IS President James Garfield
Exec produced by Amanda Peet's husband, David Benioff, and D.B. Weiss.
[quote]The series is titled “Death by Lightning” and is based on the book “Destiny Of The Republic” by Candice Millard. It is a drama series that brings to life the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield (Shannon), reluctant 20th president of the United States, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau (Macfadyen) – the man who would come to kill him.
Who's gonna play Lucretia?

Ho! That guy is — words fail. He has on-screen presence to burn. I’ll be watching.

I momentarily thought it was Garfield, but it was actually McKinley who was kind of a looker as a younger man.

scroll down for images of young McKinley. This goddamned site wouldn't take the URL of the actual good image(s)

I predict that as soon as America's teenagers are finished with Madame Web-mania, they will be struck with James Garfield-mania!

Lucretia Garfield had something of a thing with a receding hairline.
Dare Sarah Poulson or Chloe Sevigny replicate her fab look?

wow, we're branching out. I'm glad. We usually have such a limited number of historical figures Hollywood is allowed to care about. This is nice.

If you have a strong stomach, read about how his egotistical physician treated him after he was shot. He likely would have survived had they followed basic hygiene (which was known by then).

At last, the James Garfield film we’ve all been waiting for!

I remember reading somewhere that Garfield could write in Latin in one hand and in Greek in the other -- simultaneously! Handsome fella to boot!

Shannon is such a great actor. I'll watch anything he's in.
Had a huge crush on him during Empire, & loved him in The Iceman.

R9, films or series based on presidents can be quite good.
I loved Giamatti in John Adams.
That said, I found Lincoln to be somewhat of a snoozefest.

When your greatest admirer comes to kill you, you really do have a serious PR problem.

If they had left the bullet alone he would have lived. Doctors killed Garfield death by slow torture. He went from a strapping 180 lbs to 120lbs. He had a festering hole in his side 4 inches deep. At autopsy they drained a gallon of pus from his rotting body. Sadly he would have made a good POTUS.

Can't wait for this. As a non-American, I find the pre-Wilsonian American presidents so exotic, and I was pissed when his successor Chester A. Arthur appeared on The Gilded Age this season but received no lines. I don't even need some big scandal, I'd watch them read the phonebook, or some other dull thing before the telephone was invented.

Uh oh, two of the guys who produced Game of Thrones are involved. Since this is based on a finished book and actual history, they probably can’t mess it up too much. He said hopefully.

[quote] He was without question one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president," she told Rocca. "He was absolutely brilliant. He was born into incredible poverty - the last of the 'log cabin presidents.' His father died before he was two years old, so to put himself through college his first year, he was a janitor and a carpenter. By his second year they made him assistant professor of literature and ancient languages.
[quote]"By the time he was 26 he was his college's president. He had just an off-the-charts mind."

Did Michael Shannon have some sort of reconstructive surgery on his face? The lower part of his face is…immobile.

There have been at least 3 bios of Garfield in the last decade. An interesting guy, but not that interesting.

[quote]By his second year they made him assistant professor of literature and ancient languages.
He also was crazy good at maths and published a notable proof of the Pythagorean theorem in 1876. Hopefully that's an Easter Egg in the series.
I'm researching him now and apparently he got the nomination at the convention only after 36 rounds of voting? And he still won the election? Was his opponent, Winfield Scott Hancock, a literal turd or something? He had such nice hair, so what went wrong?
[quote]Garfield's accomplishments as president included his assertion of presidential authority against senatorial courtesy in executive appointments, a purge of corruption in the Post Office, and his appointment of a Supreme Court justice. He advocated for agricultural technology, an educated electorate, and civil rights for African Americans. He also proposed substantial civil service reforms, which were passed by Congress in 1883 as the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act and signed into law by his successor. The act mandates that most positions within the federal government should be awarded on the basis of merit instead of political patronage.
That's quite the list of achievements for a compromise candidate who was only in office for six months. Shame he's rated so low.

r25 Biographies, not biopics. We desperately need more filmed stuff when it comes to American presidents, and not just the usual suspects either.

Reading about it, “ his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau ” was barely an acquaintance and a full on whack job. No Secret Service back then. Lincoln’s son, a member of Garfield’s cabinet, witnessed the shooting.

It was used in this context for exaggeration purposes, Rose. Getting triggered by every instance of the word "literal" – even when apropos – is something I did when I was twelve and had just joined the internet.

I love that this question is asked even when the information on Guiteau's casting is already provided in the OP. You can't even wait for another, better opportunity to crack that joke, you just gotta constantly shit all over DL with that nonsense.
