This film does not seem like it came out in 1971. Masterpiece.
It captured Carmel/Monterey/Big Sur really well. To me it has almost a European auteur feel - Clint's first movie he directed, but he had really close mentorship from Don Siegel. Fun fact: Clint auditioned Sondra Locke (fresh from her Heart as a Lonely Hunter Oscar nomination) for the Jessica Walter part... and passed on her.

Well, it was filmed in 1970, so that’s why it looks the way it does. There was a sea change between those two years.

R2 No I’m saying the vibe, atmosphere, ethos, soundtrack, POV all seem mid 80s. This was a very forward thinking film; all movies made before 1985 but after 1959 visually appear the same to a young cunt like me.

Whenever I see Clint Eastwood, I think of Pauline Kael, who despised him without apology. But I love Jessica Walter in this movie. A truly stellar on-point depiction of Fucking Nuts! (And so beautiful !) Also the nostalgia factor is huge with this movie.

R3 Wow.... from black and white French New Wave to Spaghetti Westerns to American Auteur to Indie to Blaxploitation etc etc.... the period you list has so much more variety than now.

R4 Kael wanted to fuck him. He ignored her. She never forgave him.

Visually there was infinite variety in those years... Dr Zhivago and The Servant? But it appears you just want to argue.

It hasn’t a clue if he thinks the “visual” look of that movie is mid-80s and not early 70s… not even worth responding to such nonsense, except in terms they can understand 🤡

Jessica Walter walked so Glenn Close could run.

It was originally developed as a sit com pilot. When the network passed, Eastwood bought back the negative, killed the laughs, and added what’s basically the second half of the film.
