I like a dark roast, black, hot and strong. I used to grind my own beans but my grinder burned up.

Hi, Greg.

Hello, R2.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 30, 2024 5:13 PM |
I order freshly roasted coffee from a specialty importer/roaster in Madison WI. They do not believe in dark roasts because they obscure the individual characteristics of the coffees. I use an espresso machine even though the coffee is not roasted dark.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 30, 2024 5:13 PM |
I like Capitalist. The aroma makes me weak in the knees.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 30, 2024 5:47 PM |
$35 per pound for coffee described simply as “Colombian?” Sign me up!
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 30, 2024 5:51 PM |
I use Bustelo pre ground coffee for my moka pot and Lavazza beans for my espresso machine.
I prefer dark roasted beans but I have been thinking about trying out some lighter blends that would work well with steamed milk.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 30, 2024 5:55 PM |
I like Stone Cold Jo coffee beans and I use a French press and water heated to no more than 200°.
I like my coffee strong and black.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 30, 2024 8:31 PM |
I’m going to try a different Jo coffee—medium roast .
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 30, 2024 8:43 PM |
Cafe Bustello, French press, tiny bit of torani syrup and a splash of half and half.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 30, 2024 9:05 PM |
Compostable, organic, mesh k-cups from San Fran Coffee Co or similar from Amazon.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 30, 2024 9:51 PM |
I’ve always been partial to Peet’s. I was raised around one in the Bay Area and then moonlit as a barista over 20 years ago when I first moved to New England.
Major Dickason’s Blend is an adequate entry point, but I always liked the dark, cocoa notes of Garuda. In the recent years they’ve released an Organic line, of which I really enjoy Gaia Blend.

Borosilicate glasses are very brittle. They always break.

Bustelo.

French Press Enema
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 30, 2024 10:40 PM |
R16, I’ve always like Peet’s.
When I’m out, given the option I would stop for coffee at Peet’s rather than Starbucks.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 30, 2024 10:57 PM |
Greg takes his coffee the way he takes his men. Hot, strong, and black.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 30, 2024 11:51 PM |
Any coffee in a percolator taken black. There are a few brands that suck, but for the most part what is on sale works as long as the grind isn’t fine.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 31, 2024 12:06 AM |
French Market in the white can. It's a chicory coffee blend with a chocolatey flavor. I make it in a moka pot. I only use one tablespoon per cup of water. I notice with other coffees I have to use at least 3 to get it dark enough. I add a dash of cold milk to cool it down. It pretty much tastes like unsweetened chocolate milk.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 31, 2024 12:16 AM |
Trader Joe's Fair Trade Sumatra. I like it because it's not too acidic.
I get the whole bean and grind before brewing, and drink it black.
Unfortunately, due to blood pressure issues, I limit myself to only 1 cup a day.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 31, 2024 12:33 AM |
For K cups, I like Starbucks Veranda. Caribou also makes some good pods.
If I’m making fresh ground, Broad Porch, especially the Winter Pyjamas roast, is my favorite.
For iced, I like the nitro cans from High Brew but I also have to limit caffeine due to blood pressure.

My store brands, either Lidl or Shoprite, work well for me because I cold brew my coffee for 13 hours.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 31, 2024 12:55 AM |
I recently got a coffee maker for my bathroom so I can have coffee in bed or while getting ready, without going downstairs.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 31, 2024 1:21 AM |
I use a Keurig and buy whatever’s cheapest at the grocery store / CVS / Costco / wherever I happen to be when I remember I’m out of Keurig cups. It generally always tastes more or less identical to a $6 Americano from the most self-important purple-hair barista shop in Tribeca.
Not a coffee snob at all, but like you Greg, I keep my coffee maker plugged in right beside the shitter.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 31, 2024 1:32 AM |

Starbucks morning blend with hints of brown sugar and orange or something or other flavor, Keurig. Splash of sugar and plain non-dairy creamer. In a mug.

Cafe Bustelo is ground so fine, I can't see using it in a French press.

Balthazar beans in a Bialetti Moka Express.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 31, 2024 1:38 AM |

R32, Ah, yes! The percolator popping in the opening scene of MD is worth endless repeat watches. Black coffee and your face palmed in ice cubes. Now that's how to wake up.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 31, 2024 2:39 AM |
I agree, R43.
When I was a child, I read my mother’s “Mommie Dearest” paperback. I was taken by JC’s morning ice cubes and witch hazel plunge and started doing it myself.
My poor parents.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 31, 2024 2:58 AM |
Peet's Major Dickinson's Blend, cone filter drip, splash of half and half. If I'm out of coffee or in an extreme hurry, it's a teaspoon of Medaglia d'Oro instant espresso in a tiny espresso cup, black.
Weekends: Peet's filter drip in a glass Irish Coffee mug + shot of Bailey's + shot of Whiskey. If I have whipped cream on hand, it's a real SF Irish Coffee = dark roast plus one sugar cube plus a shot (or two) of Jameson's, topped with whipped cream. The mug must be pre-heated with hot water. Served with two Marlboro Red's.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 31, 2024 3:02 AM |
I buy a local organic light roast whole beans and then ground them. It is divine but unfortunately $20 a pound. It makes most other coffees taste like shit mixed with dirt.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 31, 2024 3:06 AM |
Starbucks Blonde Roast. In a large container usually found in a cooler with the juices. If I want it hot I nuke it.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 31, 2024 3:16 AM |
I like donut shop style coffee. Or breakfast blend. In K cups if I’m making it.
I use cream, light cream, or half and half.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 31, 2024 3:22 AM |
Another vote for Peet’s - here in SF. Grind the beans then do a pour over. At the moment I’m enjoying the Guatemalan San Sebastian blend. Add frothed milk, brew the coffee strong 💪🏻

by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 31, 2024 3:43 AM |
probably, nothing
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 31, 2024 3:58 AM |
Right I’ll use evaporated, and some kind of sweetener that’s not straight up white sugar. We have maple syrup from northern Flyoverstan and some of that brown sugar that’s really the unprocessed granulated kind.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 31, 2024 3:59 AM |

3 Corações for me, strong, sweet no milk.

My former long-distance partner, now huzbear, is from Boston. We spent years commuting between SFO-BOS. I used to take early morning flights there and back. You could tell which passengers were from Boston because they had iced coffees at 6am in the middle of Winter. It's peculiar to me. When he makes the coffee, he'll make a large, strong pot and put half of it in the fridge to make iced coffee later.
Another weird Boston coffee thing is "Dunk's". There's one, sometimes three, on every corner. I go in, it's freezing outside, and I order a coffee. The say, "regulah?" and I say "Yes," thinking that I'll get a small, hot coffee. Instead, it comes with cream and tons of sugar. Almost spit it out. Maybe it's a COVID thing, but you have to ask them what to put (or not) into your coffee in advance - you can't do it on your own. A mitigating factor is the widespread availability of Apple Cider Donuts, which we don't have in California.

Not, dammit.

Trader Joe’s coffee and I pour a single cup through a thingy with a filter.

Coffee is my newest thing. I went 55 years without drinking morning coffee and what a dumb ass I was. I look forward to it the minute my eyes open. The caffeine is what gets me moving. Otherwise I might crawl back into bed and sleep all day. I work for myself and need all the motivation I can get. I have a Keurig and a French press and a drip coffee machine but typically fill my refillable pods with a local grind. My next step is to buy a grinder and start buying the beans. How many cups a day do most of your drink?
by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 1, 2024 3:32 AM |
Partner prefers a darker roast.....we do Intelligensia Black Cat Espresso, whole bean.
R63 I guess I've never seen a Keurig, I don't understand how pods can be reusable? (Not a bitchy statement, genuinely curious)
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 1, 2024 3:36 AM |
Tesoro from Philz Coffee. Pretty much any flavor is very good!
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 1, 2024 3:42 AM |
You put your own ground coffee into a permanent pod which you then clean out and reload. At that point, why use a Keurig at all?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 1, 2024 3:42 AM |
Thanks R66. I didn't know there were reusable versions.

64 replies and not a single mention of Starbucks?
I buy coffee at my local starbucks and have them grind it in store to my specification. For a lighter blend, I like the Guatemala Antigua. For a dark roast I prefer the Komodo Dragon blend.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 1, 2024 3:44 AM |

We’ve used a Keurig for a while and have 20 hard plastic reusable cups that we fill and use. At first, cleaning and refilling them felt like a total hassle, but you get used to it.. The Keurig is convenient, especially when working from home.
We’re now using a French press, but have a Keurig in the bathroom.

I also drink coffee from a Madison roaster called Just Coffee, r4. Costco in Madison actually carries their Bike Fuel medium blend in two pound bags.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | February 1, 2024 7:03 AM |
So funny how we change as we age. I used to have Sumatra dark roast French press with milk and sugar. I did Nespresso lungos black for a while, now I do whole bean light roasts from my local hipster coffee place in my Moccamaster.

R63 I didn’t start drinking coffee until 43. The only downsides are that it is a major headache if I don’t get it on time in the am and it has made my teeth more yellow.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | February 1, 2024 12:20 PM |
I'll add a vote for the Major Dickason's Blend (my spelling may b incorrect). It's expensive, but comes in an 18 oz bag, so I justify it.
Way upthread, there was a post for Dean's Beans... man if THAT isn't local to Massachusetts and the western part of the state. For wMA coffee, I'd go with Fogbuster (what used to be Pierce Brothers). Fogbuster blend is the best.

Pete's Coffee. The Italian blend. Not the Major Dickhead you get at Costco. Their special blend sucks. Stick with Italian or French. Something about that flavor, smooth dark roast, not burnt or bitter like Starsucks.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | February 1, 2024 4:32 PM |
I like Peet's Cafe Domingo, but it's almost always sold out. I started buying Santo Domingo, which might be even better.
Coffee remains my one vice. I don't smoke, I rarely drink, I don't gamble, I confine my gossip to Datalounge, but coffee, I cannot live without coffee.

by Anonymous | reply 92 | February 2, 2024 4:16 AM |
Coffee is hardy a vice by today's standards. Many studies say 1 or 2 cups is good for you, and has proven to temporarily sharpen mental acuity. But we knew that.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | February 2, 2024 5:25 AM |
I find it interesting that the adults of generations past who drank coffee all day did so because it was WEAK. Like 4 Tbsp. for an entire pot. If you google what is the standard for today, it will say 1 scoop per cup or 12 per pot!!
by Anonymous | reply 94 | February 2, 2024 5:26 AM |
I don’t think coffee is a vice, but the two times I had to go through coffee withdrawal were terrible experiences so I do think it is very addictive.

by Anonymous | reply 106 | February 3, 2024 2:40 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 109 | February 3, 2024 2:46 PM |
Yes. If I'm worried about freezing weather and possible burst pipes, I keep bottled coffee on hand. I was making coffee with bottled water after one winter storm. Lifeboost Coffee. It's organic, single sourced and low-acidic which is great for those are concerned with upset stomach and inflammation, which can be a side-effect of coffee for some. It also tastes amazing.
