"In the mid 2000s, the legendary Betty White had a career resurgence that kept her busy until she passed away in 2021. It’s high time that Gibbs gets the same treatment. Let’s see her as a difficult customer on “The Bear” or a scary grandmother on “Abbott Elementary.” "
Is it really time to give 92 year old Marla Gibbs the 'Betty White Treatment' ?

"Legendary status"?

Who?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 28, 2024 4:30 PM |
I've always liked Marla Gibbs, but quite frankly - she doesn't exactly have the same 'career' as White did, and by no means matches up to White.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 28, 2024 4:39 PM |
Maybe she doesn't want a resurgence. Is she begging someone to hire her?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 28, 2024 4:49 PM |
R5 She's been seen walking up and down Sunset Blvd carrying a large sign saying 'Will act for $$$, but no porno'. So far, no one is interested.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 28, 2024 4:54 PM |
She had a cameo on Young Sheldon.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 28, 2024 5:07 PM |
If she should ever reach the beloved status of Betty White, sure.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 28, 2024 5:29 PM |
She was one of the stars of The Jeffersons for ten years, then afterward went right on to star in 227 for 5 years. That's pretty busy and successful. I would love to see more of her; it was sweet seeing her get her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year (despite her health scare).
I don't like it when people start clamoring for more of some treasured old actor, then they get put out there and they seem uncomfortable or like they *shouldn't* be paraded around. Based on this clip, Marla seems to be doing ok. Would love to see her face again!

At least Mother Jefferson hit her peak fame right before her death.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 28, 2024 7:18 PM |
Zara Cully (Mother Jefferson) had a birthday this past Friday - would've been 132 years old had she lived past February 28, 1978.

[quote] would've been 132 years old
So old!

I love Florence and I love Mary Jenkins

What she should be doing is taking her ass down to The Help Center to ask for a career resuscitation.

First I’d give her a bra…

Betty White got The Betty White Treatment because of her lifelong contributions to TV.
Marla, not so much.

I was molested.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 28, 2024 7:59 PM |
She looks absolutely incredible.

Betty White won 8 Emmys. Marla has a ways to go.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 28, 2024 8:05 PM |
Kids are clamoring for Marla to appear on SNL or show up in some kind of stunt Super Bowl ad campaign or maybe even as the cigarette girl to the halftime shows usher.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 28, 2024 9:08 PM |
I think she’s looking like Nora Desmond. Which is spectacular.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 28, 2024 9:11 PM |
Mary Jenkins wouldn’t let Lester or Brenda live. She hen-pecked the hell out of them both. On every episode of 227.

Can she carry a tune, r22?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 28, 2024 9:49 PM |
Norma, R22. Norma.

She is recurring on Days of Our Lives as Big Momma. For the insurance benefits if nothing else .

Oh come on r4, it’s not like Betty white was exactly Rita Hayworth. She was a teevee star. I mean, I loved her for what she was, but she was always in basic cable sitcom territory.

Isn’t MSG making a comeback? ACCENT should rehire her.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 28, 2024 10:12 PM |
I love Marla Gibbs. She was my favorite as a kid. I just couldn't imagine being so free and sassy.
She doesn't need to be Betty White to deserve recognition. She seems like she's still with it and would enjoy working more.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 28, 2024 11:03 PM |
I like Marla as well. She didn’t get started until she was in her early 40s.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 28, 2024 11:21 PM |
When ever I hear Marla’s name I think about the poster here who said that when he was 10 or 11, he loved Marla Gibbs and called everyone “honey ‘chile” for a summer.

All the little homosexuals boys adore Marla Gibbs.

I think it's time to give Carol Burnett the 'treatment'. She's much more talented and more well-known, which makes her more deserving.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 29, 2024 1:13 AM |
She’s a honey bunny

Did the fcuking press spell my very well-known first name wrong, again!??
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 29, 2024 2:54 AM |
She's not a great actress and has poor comic timing.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 29, 2024 3:24 AM |
R4 You know I’m not pulling for racial equity but I kinda see their careers as very similar. Gibbs was on a highly rated sitcom as the premier supporting star. It can be argued that the dynamic between her and Weezy was a huge part of the Jeffersons success and the Jefferson was more successful than Golden Girls. Gibbs then went on to anchor her own show which was a solid hit for 5 years. What did Betty White do so prolific since Golden Girls. I realize she was a bit of a bigger film star than Gibbs but Gibbs has worked pretty consistently since her 80s run, especially for a black actress from the silent generation.

R36 Bro are u kidding. I’ve seen countless reruns of the Jefferson. She laid the foundation of that type of character. She was excellent and her comedic timing impeccable. She also was very good playing the straight man to Jackee Harry’s divatude on 227. I’ve seen very little drama from her but also thought she was well cast as Kerry Washington’s mom on Scandal. This is article is right. Let’s give Gibbs her flowers while she is still living.

How about a sexually explicit lesbian photoshoot with Dionne Warwick for the cover of Hustler?

Why was Mary a bitch to Brenda? Stupid hairstyles?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 29, 2024 7:32 AM |
R37, Betty White was a pioneer of television, having one of the early sitcom. Her shows broke ground by being the first to feature a black performer and the first to be produced by a woman.
Betty White was then a supporting star of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, widely considered one of the best sitcoms of all time. She also spent time as a frequent guest star on the Carol Burnett Show and then Mama’s Family.
She continues her success wit the Golden Girls, a highly rated show, two time Emmy over all winner and one of the only shows in which all the stars won a best actor Emmy.
Marla Gibbs, as talented and beloved as she is, has not had anywhere near the career that Betty White had.
