Beatrice Arthur

Everyone called her Bea. Did she miss the memo? It’s as pretentious as Deborah Harry.

She took a shit on the floor of my dressing room.

OP, was there some particular reason you felt compelled to start a Bea thread when we had already had an active discussion started in the last two weeks?

"I called her my little Beasy but she still didn't like me."

Better than Burniss Frankel from the western shore of Maryland.

R4 "It was Bernice you gum chewing chicken lover!"

by Anonymousreply 5July 22, 2025 10:38 PM

She went by the name Bea because Bernice was a boy’s name in her neighborhood.

by Anonymousreply 6July 22, 2025 10:43 PM

R6 Yes, but spelled Burnice and pronounced Burniss. Bernice was a popular woman's name back then. Bea seemed a bit paranoid at times.

by Anonymousreply 7July 22, 2025 10:45 PM

I heard Bea's vagina turned to clay because of the STD she contracted in the Marines.

Everyone calls Robert De Niro Bobby, and yet I don't hear you complaining about him.

Double standard much?

R7, there’s probably not a Bea Arthur interview that I haven’t seen and she always mentions that a lot of boys had that name back then. Can anyone confirm this?

by Anonymousreply 10July 22, 2025 11:31 PM

R6, ok maybe it was a Maryland thing 🤷🏻‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 11July 23, 2025 12:07 AM

R10 In her 2002 interview she said that many boys had that name but it was pronounced Burniss and was probably spelled Burnice. Her original name Bernice is pronounced Berneece. I don't know what she was complaining about.

Has anyone seen Bea's 1970 movie Lovers And Other Strangers? Is it worth watching?

by Anonymousreply 13July 23, 2025 4:12 PM

R2 seems to be stuck in a time warp from last year.
