Two DC gay bar regulars die together from fentanyl mixed into drugs

Sources familiar with D.C.’s LGBTQ nightlife scene say widespread reports on social media of the sudden and unexpected deaths of two widely known and beloved gay men from an apparent accidental drug overdose on Dec. 27 at one of the men’s homes has triggered an outcry for the city and the community to become more aggressive in addressing the opioid overdose problem and how it is impacting the LGBTQ community.

D.C. police and Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department reports show that prominent D.C. attorney and LGBTQ rights supporter Brandon Roman, 38, and historic preservation expert and home renovation business owner Robert ‘Robbie’ Barletta, 28, were found unconscious when police and emergency medical personnel arrived at Barletta’s house on the afternoon of Dec. 27.

An addendum to R1,

"two widely known and beloved gay men"

Widely known within the questionable and reprobate microcosm they associated with in DC.

Feel sad for their family. They willingly participated in a path of self destruction so just another fatal DC story. I wonder how long it took their "friends" from their "widely known" circle to loot the house for drugs and pawnable valuables? Guess they will have take down those Grindr profiles now. " A "gay wannabes that pushed the envelope too far.

Why do we celebrate self destruction?

by Anonymousreply 8January 26, 2024 4:54 PM

^Because gay men pick up development at about 14 when they first started feeling outcasted from their peers. Rarely will you ever see an article about heterosexuals that depict their "beloved" status in the community as follows:

"Both men were regular patrons at popular D.C. gay bars, including the gay nightclub and dance bar Bunker and the recently opened gay bar and lounge Shakers."

They were cool and we must put them on a pedestal because they were party animals! Only gays would think this is something that needs to be published in an article about a voluntary drug overdose. Or that an article about a voluntary drug overdose about two privileged men who should know better needs to be published at all.

by Anonymousreply 11January 27, 2024 7:16 AM

It appears that some older millennials -- who really should know better -- still think drugs are as safe today as they were in their heyday. But they're wrong.

by Anonymousreply 12January 27, 2024 7:30 AM

"voluntary drug overdose"

Wow, the cretinous bitter unfuckable unfucked crabapple trolls above.

Accidental drug overdose. Reckless perhaps, sure. Party boys should be checking all their drug supply for fent.

“two widely known and beloved gay men”

Oxymoron.

by Anonymousreply 15January 27, 2024 9:16 AM

I’m in my 50s and have seen it all. I’ve seen friends disappear into addiction and the collapse of their mental and physical health. A couple died. This is just tragic.

by Anonymousreply 16January 27, 2024 9:29 AM

Can I have their stuff?

by Anonymousreply 17January 27, 2024 12:51 PM

R13 Pretty sure no one was holding a gun to their head when they decided to par-tay.

Please stop with your enablist BS. One already had a receding hairline, she should have known better.

Sometimes you play with fire and get burned.

VOLUNTARY.

by Anonymousreply 19January 27, 2024 4:02 PM

"Accidental Drug Overdose" No one told these guys to take any drugs.

by Anonymousreply 20January 27, 2024 4:10 PM

Listen schoolmarm Nancy Reagan cunts, it is accidental overdose if you are a recreational drug user with some experience and you snort a line of coke and drop dead because it's fentanyl. It's reckless, but is not "VOLUNTARY DRUG OVERDOSE". I agree recreational drug uses now need to up their precautions, or stop taking illicit street drugs.

If a passenger had been sucked out of that plane when the hidden door blew out, would that have been voluntary air traffic death because he didn't anticipate a faulty aircraft? You decided to fly and trust the aircraft!

If you go skiing and chair lift dumps you to your death, is that voluntary ski death? You decided to go do a dangerous sport, after all!

by Anonymousreply 21January 27, 2024 4:40 PM

Thanks for teaching the children, r21, and we should add there are sober types and people impacted by addiction who approach things like R18 for valod reasons, and there's not much point in engaging with them when they say inflammatory things.

by Anonymousreply 22January 27, 2024 4:44 PM

You would think a major US city like DC would be able to track overdose deaths by gender, race, sexual preference if known etc.

often significant and deadly problems spread among certain groups and no one knows because random events are not often seen as part of a bigger connected picture.

I wonder how many deaths each year national for gay men directly related in someway to drug use?

by Anonymousreply 23January 27, 2024 4:51 PM

Spoken like a true druggie, R21.

by Anonymousreply 24January 27, 2024 4:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 27January 27, 2024 4:58 PM

What a wonderful person you've become, r,27!

by Anonymousreply 28January 27, 2024 5:01 PM

I live around the corner from Bunker which is a relatively new gay bar in town (Shakers is even newer and is located not too far away).

Bunket charges a very high cover because most of the gays there are “partying” and don’t drink so they need to make up the difference. It’s located underground under a Subway shop on the ground level and a restaurant/club on top.

This is the historic intersection (14th and U Street Northwest) where the 1968 riots ignited following B the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s also one block away from the famous, black-owned Ben’s Chili Bowl which was untouched during the riots and still operates today.

by Anonymousreply 29January 27, 2024 5:04 PM

R21 Is a recreational drug user who's shocked people don't feel sorry for drug addict deaths.

by Anonymousreply 34January 27, 2024 6:15 PM

You're really terrible at comebacks.

by Anonymousreply 35January 27, 2024 6:16 PM

R21 is someone who understands that words have meanings.

You can think the two men deserved it or even that the world is better off without them. You can argue that it was stupid to voluntarily take drugs. Those are opinions. But it’s beyond stupid to insist that it was a voluntary drug overdose.

A voluntary drug overdose is a suicide or suicide attempt. Unless there was intent to overdose, the overdose was not voluntary.

by Anonymousreply 36January 27, 2024 6:18 PM

It's hard to feel especially sorry about this.

I'm sorry they were so dumb?

by Anonymousreply 37January 27, 2024 6:20 PM

R34 Human beings who thought so little of their lives that they set themselves up for their own demise? Selfishly.

There are people dying in the world through no choice of their own (i.e,, Gaza) yet where is the outrage and sympathy for them?

Geez get over your recreational user self. Hope your booty bump is worth it.

[quote] Sources familiar with D.C.’s LGBTQ nightlife scene say widespread reports on social media of the sudden and unexpected deaths of two widely known and beloved gay men from an apparent accidental drug overdose on Dec. 27 at one of the men’s homes has triggered an outcry for the city and the community to become more aggressive in addressing the opioid overdose problem and how it is impacting the LGBTQ community.

There is nothing in the article supporting the claim the deaths triggered an outcry for the city and community to become more aggressive in addressing the opioid overdose problem. There are just examples of how groups and the community are attempting to address it.

This might be nitpicking, but “outcry” implies a demand for or a complaint about the lack of something without action on behalf of the outcryer. It’s possible there was an outcry, but the claim isn’t supported.

I think the article would have inspired fewer unsympathetic responses if it had said, “has triggered the community to initiate programs to provide Narcan and training in its use.”

by Anonymousreply 51January 27, 2024 6:35 PM

yes the "publication" is just boilerplate pabulum of our times. Still, it's sad people are ODing who had no intent to die, just have fun, in their own fashion. I think it's sad junkies od on bad drugs, too. Not every junkie has a death wish. Believe it or not.

I actually thought the rest of the article was surprising well researched and presented, R52!

by Anonymousreply 55January 27, 2024 6:45 PM

OK then I'll have another look.

by Anonymousreply 56January 27, 2024 6:46 PM

This is terribly sad, as the unexpected loss of any human life is. But it really makes me roll my eyes to the back of my head when our people exploit tragedies like this to try and connect them specifically to the plight of the LGBTQ community. Fentanyl lacing is absolutely NOT specific to the gay community, nor is recreational drug use. We're not being specifically targeted here, and we're not being impacted any more than any other community. The fentanyl crisis is one of the most equal-opportunity killers out there right now. Frat boys and queens, hedge fund managers and housewives, rich, poor, black, white—literally anyone who uses illicit drugs, whether it's their first time or 1,000th can be killed by fentanyl lacing.

I'm all for gay nightlife venue owners becoming more proactive about protecting their patrons by supplying testing strips and narcan, but it doesn't do us or anyone else any favors by attempting to create a greater association than there already is between illicit drug use and the gay community. This week it was two gay east coast barflies, a couple of weeks ago it was three straight midwestern football bros. And neither party was any more "stupid" than a woman who gets her drink roofied at a club and ends up being raped or killed. There are still PLENTY of people that aren't aware how widespread the use of fentanyl cutting/contamination truly is—including plenty of people here on the last few threads concerning it. Hopefully that is beginning to change.

by Anonymousreply 57January 27, 2024 6:58 PM

Won't ANYONE think of the POC tranny prostitutes?!?!

by Anonymousreply 58January 27, 2024 7:03 PM

R57

And yet of the many forums I have read on over the last few decades DL is the only one where PnP meth using posters show up to entertain with great stories of great highs and great sex.

Of course the gay community has a greater use of meth and coke and poppers than the overall general population.

If you walk up to most people in any mall in the US and say you are doing a survey on PnP or chem sex they would look at you like you were talking gibberish. They would have no idea what you were talking about.

by Anonymousreply 59January 27, 2024 7:07 PM

I think the article would have had fewer unsympathetic responses if it didn't try to canonize another duo of selfish, hedonistic A gays.

by Anonymousreply 60January 27, 2024 7:18 PM

What made them "selfish". What about A gays? Do they even exist anymore? And these two, in DC? "A"?

by Anonymousreply 61January 27, 2024 7:22 PM

R61 Give it up, gurl

We all know what circles these two ran in and the lost the race.

I think there's still role model potential strengthening the courage of young people to come out when it's complicated, which in many places it still is. So a Jonathan Bailey, for example is a representative. But after those early years, you make your own choices, absolutely. I don't know why the younger guy was living that life but the old guy was just a sad leftover from a period of his youth that had passed.

by Anonymousreply 92January 27, 2024 11:44 PM

I think we should also understand that these two were highly engaged in the "A" gay party scene in DC. People in this club , clique or group frequently reject anyone who is not young, white, fit and in that upper income range. It's a high school mindset driven popularity contest. Not crying any tears, I have been close to those circles in DC , they are despicable people for the the most part.

If you're a recreational drug user, you should pay more for health insurance and your life insurance eligibility/cost should be the same as for smokers. Rehab should be covered however. Was there a Go Fund Me for the two despite both their high incomes? Did the Crew Club observe a moment of silence in their honor?

by Anonymousreply 93January 28, 2024 5:41 PM

A slippery slope indeed because some might want to then look at increased infectious disease risk as well when looking at higher insurance rates.
