I just walked into a 7/11 with a surprisingly high end sound system and a familiar song was playing... The Bangles' Walk Like An Egyptian. As a child of the late 80s and 90s I've probably heard it dozens of times over the years. But, I guess I'd never heard it on a proper sound system, but on old car radios and on our shitty TV speakers when it played on MTV. I think because it was such a novelty song, I never paid attention to it. Tonight, I was struck at how well produced it is -- wonderful jangly, 80s new wave sound.
I’m surprised it hasn’t been canceled for cultural appropriation.

It speaks to the period, as much art often does.
People were going to see the King Tut museum exhibits.
They were playing off of that, as most artists do; they riff off of what is going on at the time.
These are the times we live in; we need to justify every little thing. Dissect it down to its molecular being.
This was a fucking pop song that borrowed from a popular theme on the era: King Tut museum offerings. They (the museum exhibitions and the song) were popular as fuck.

Somewhat off topic, but I saw them a while back and they're an unexpectedly excellent live band. Total pros.

I thought Walk Like an Egyptian was a Bananarama song.

I thought the video was awful.

The chap who wrote it (Liam Sternberg) also wrote a couple of singles for Fuzzbox (Pink Sunshine & International Rescue), as well as Ratt and Rachel Sweet. Apparently all of The Bangles didn't sing on it (Debbie) and that has always been an issue for them on some level.
But it was their biggest hit..

The Bangles was the first concert I went to! I was in high school when they hit it big time. Such a fun group with amazing harmonies.

I don't understand why someone like you can't understand why someone who is not like you could like something you don't like, R10.
