For ‘Barbie’ Fans Online, a Bitterly Ironic Oscar Snub

Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie missed Academy Award nominations for director and actress, respectively — a fact that was a little too on the nose for some.

by Anonymousreply 104January 28, 2024 1:51 PM

When the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced this morning, the snubs of the two most prominent women involved in “Barbie” — the director, Greta Gerwig, and the lead actress, Margot Robbie — became the breakout story.

The top-grossing film of 2023, passing the $1 billion mark worldwide, is based on the imagined life and times of the iconic Mattel doll. A cultural phenomenon on its own terms, “Barbie,” along with “Oppenheimer,” became half of an unusually thoughtful summer blockbuster duo released on the same day in July (“Barbenheimer”): nothing to sneeze at.

As it turns out, the internet has strong opinions about today’s announcement.

“Let me see if I understand this: the Academy nominated ‘Barbie’ for Best Picture (eight nominations total) — a film about women being sidelined and rendered invisible in patriarchal structures — but not the woman who directed the film. Okay then,” read a viral X post by the writer Charlotte Clymer.

The film wasn’t completely shut out — it was nominated for best picture, while Ms. Gerwig picked up a nomination with Noah Baumbach for adapted screenplay, Ryan Gosling for supporting actor, and America Ferrera for supporting actress. But the fact that Mr. Gosling was tabbed for his towheaded Ken, who discovers the idea of patriarchy and then attempts to dominate Barbieland, before Ms. Robbie’s character destroys gender-based oppression, was too much for some to take.“We’re actually doing patriarchy very well,” the writer Jodi Lipper wrote in an Instagram story, quoting a Ken line from the film.

(In a statement released today, Mr. Gosling wrote, “To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”)

Indeed, because “Barbie” functions as a commentary on sexism and a metacommentary on its own place in feminist discourse, the movie itself was the first place some of its fans reached to express their outrage over the snubs.

“Nominating Ken but not Barbie is literally the plot of the movie,” the novelist Brad Meltzer wrote in a thread, above a gif of Ms. Robbie, as Barbie, dancing and saying, “Do you guys ever think about dying?”

“No but seriously…this could have been a storyline straight out of the Barbie movie,” reads the caption on a popular TikTok post from this morning.

Particularly galling for some were the awards garnered by Ms. Gerwig and Ms. Robbie’s “Barbenheimer” male counterparts, Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy, for their work on “Oppenheimer.”

“Greta gerwig & margot robbie were as crucial to barbie’s critical & commercial success as nolan & cillian murphy were to oppenheimer’s - imagine the uproar if one or both of those men had been snubbed! it’s wild how barbie is ‘oscar worthy,’ but not the women who made it so,” the writer Zoë Rose Bryant posted on X.

The snub comes after the Golden Globes host Jo Koy drew groans during his monologue for comparing the source material for “Oppenheimer" (“a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book”) with that of “Barbie” (“a plastic doll with big boobies”).

For now, those hoping the director and star of “Barbie” will be recognized for their work will have to wish that the musical version of the film the two teased earlier this month comes to fruition. There’s always the Tonys.

by Anonymousreply 1January 24, 2024 4:21 AM

Why are there so many whiners around? Whine, whine, whine. Commercial success does not necessarily mean artistic success. Nolan and Murphy work was superior; the women, not so much. Oscars don't like comedies and everyone knows it.

by Anonymousreply 3January 24, 2024 4:29 AM

Nominations have to conform to a movie's message?

So Christian Bale should absolutely have been nominated for 'The Dark Knight" if Heath Ledger was, since Batman is good and the Joker is not.

by Anonymousreply 6January 24, 2024 4:34 AM

There could not have been a more perfect outcome.

If this stupid dog shit movie had to be nominated, then I find it poetic that Ken got nominated for an Oscar, and Barbie didn't.

I relish in the sting that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig are feeling right now!!!

If I could drink their bitter tears, I would!

They are BOTH Oscar nominees this year, for Best Picture and Screenplay. This outrage is ridiculous and takes away from great work by women filmmakers and other actresses.

by Anonymousreply 14January 24, 2024 5:35 AM

I wonder if Greta was snubbed not because she's a woman, but because she's fat. She's going to have to lose weight to be a contender.

by Anonymousreply 15January 24, 2024 5:49 AM

I feel like they got snubbed because the people who voted assumed enough voting members would vote for them so they wouldn’t have to. And everyone thought that was and they got cut out lol.

by Anonymousreply 16January 24, 2024 6:39 AM

Oh God the patriarchy nuts are at it again. Gerwig got nominated for screenwriting that piece of shit full of lies, distortions and contradictions. She also made over 50 million dollars from the thing. Isn't that enough?

The way people vote for the Oscars is very random. Sometimes they vote for a nominee because they met them and liked them, or because the nominee is dating their best friend, not necessarily because they even saw their movie or because they believe in "art".

December 20, 2023

With award season upon us, the alliterate director needs to try and clean up her mess which is why she got married. She is hoping people will focus on that and not that she took her married boyfriend who is now her husband on vacation while the boyfriend's wife gave birth to their child.

Barbie was a hit because it was far less crap than it should have been. That doesn’t make it good, or worthy of an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 23January 24, 2024 8:53 AM

Poor Things did all the things Barbie thought it was doing: explored what it means to be a human and a woman, battle and overcome the patriarchs in life, what it means to become aware of pain and suffering as well as joy, and while Barbie is the children’s toy version, I think Poor Things is the one that is for grown ups.

What does it all mean?

by Anonymousreply 28January 24, 2024 11:38 AM

I think the irony is downright hilarious. And as someone said upthread, financial success does not guarantee an Oscar nomination or win. And neither does artistic succeas. The entitlement makes me even more glad there were no nominations for Gerwig and Robbie.

Have either one of these women spoken kind words publicly for Jacqueline Durran (nominated costume designer who also won an Oscar for Gerwig's "Little Women"), or America Ferrera (BOTH women)? Or were they too busy crying because they didn't get what they felt they were entitled to?

Apparently, it's not enough for other women on the film to be nominated. Which if true, says a lot.

The movie was a fun, campy popcorn flick. Oscar material it was not.

by Anonymousreply 33January 24, 2024 1:32 PM

Gerwig wrote the script. She completely sucked the fun out of the Barbie character and instead decided to give all the memorable moments to Ken. Margot did not give an Oscar worthy performance because she simply didn't have enough to work with for that. Thats on Gerwig, not anyone else period.

They should be grateful this overrated hack of a movie got any nominations outside of set design to begin with.

by Anonymousreply 34January 24, 2024 1:37 PM

Now that DUMB CUNT Michelle Yeoh is chiming in with her two cents.

This is the same cunt who last year campaigned for the Oscar by saying she deserved it, over Cate Blanchett.

It's really becoming sickening, how POLITICAL the Oscars are becoming. They were always political, but now it's just fucking ridiculous.

What a bunch of whining CUNTS!

[quote] Michelle Yeoh Asks How “Barbie” Got 'Nominated for Best Picture But Not Best Director and Best Actress' at Oscars

Michelle Yeoh is weighing in on Barbie's eight Academy Award nominations — and Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie's surprising snubs in the Best Director and Best Actress categories.

Yeoh, who won Best Actress at the 2023 Oscars for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, joined the Today show Wednesday to discuss her new Netflix series The Brothers Sun and reflect on her groundbreaking awards season last year.

"You know, joy and disappointment, it seems to go hand in hand," she said, when asked by Today cohost Hoda Kotb for her opinion on the surprising Barbie omissions. "It’s just, for us, it’s like, it’s not enough nominations to go around."

"The only take is like, it’s so competitive out there and there is no guarantee because you’re not the only voter, you know? It’s widespread," she added. "Thank God the movie got nominated for Best Picture. But you do think, ‘How do you get nominated for Best Picture but not Best Director and not Best Actress?’ "

Though Gerwig, 40, and Robbie, 33, were left out of the five nominees in the Best Director and Best Actress categories when the Oscar nominations were unveiled Tuesday, the filmmaker and Barbie star did receive nominations in the Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture categories, respectively.

"It happens and I’m sorry it happened to them because it’s obviously one of the most successful and beloved movies," Yeoh, 60, shared during her Today show appearance. "Look at the box office."

"I hope they don’t have to wait that long," she added, when Kotb pointed out that Yeoh's own Oscar win came more than three decades into her acting career.

Gerwig and Robbie's exclusion from individual directing and acting categories at the upcoming 96th Oscars ceremony has notably drawn criticism from cast members America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling, who were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, on Tuesday. Ferrera, 39, told Variety that she "was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated," and shared in a statement to PEOPLE that Gerwig and Robbie "made history and raised the bar with Barbie."

Gosling, 43, said in a statement shared with PEOPLE Tuesday, "To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement."

"Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history," he added. "Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees."

Ferrera even followed up on Gosling's statement late Tuesday night when she shared it on her Instagram Story and added, “Oh Ryan. Just so well said," in a caption to the post.

by Anonymousreply 44January 24, 2024 5:07 PM

The only feminism is this shithole of a movie is upper-middle-class white millennial feminism--I have to be nice but not too nice, I have to be pretty but not too pretty. Poor me. My life is so hard. Oh here's a Black Barbie and a Disabled Barbie and a fat Barbie to show how much representation matters to cute blonde me. Isn't that senior citizen beautiful. Yep, I'd kill myself if I looked like her but the idea of aging is beautiful. Let's pretend Ken isn't gay because we can't have that. He must pine for Barbie and be lost without me. Let's keep inventing plot complications even though the movie basically ended a half hour ago. How about an Oscar supporting acting nomination for Will Ferrell. He participated. That should count.

That’s such a kick in the teeth to the hundreds of people who made the movie a success, people who are not Greta or Margot. That line pisses me off. Let’s see Greta by herself with a camera on her shoulder make a film with Margot as the only actor and see if they can make a Best Picture.

by Anonymousreply 47January 24, 2024 6:29 PM

I voted for Hillary but I don't have to agree with her.

by Anonymousreply 48January 24, 2024 6:40 PM

The fact that this mildly entertaining corporate confection received a "Best Picture" nomination, or any Oscar nod at all, is absurd. Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie did competent enough work, but nothing exceptional that outshines their peers in the relevant categories. The celebration of identity over merit has truly gone off the deep end.

by Anonymousreply 49January 24, 2024 6:45 PM

Except for Best Picture (10 nominees), I believe all the other categories have only five nominees each. If Gerwig and Robbie were nominated, then that means someone who made it on the list of nominees would have to be bumped off and "snubbed."

So, would that be fair? No.

Please, Barbie whiners. Barbra Streisand was not nominated for for Best Director for "Yentl" and "The Prince of Tides," both of which were much more substantial than "Barbie."

"The Prince of Tides" was nominated for seven Oscars including Best Picture with Nick Nolte receiving a Best Actor nomination for Best Actor. The movie lost all seven Oscars for which it was nominated

Yentl" was nominated for four Oscars including Best Supporting Actress (Amy Irving) and Best Song Score. It won only Best Song Score. And Barbra Streisand had won the first Golden Globe awarded to a woman for Best Director., but no Oscar, not even a nomination.

by Anonymousreply 60January 24, 2024 11:18 PM

R60 Agreed. White women are ruining her moment. It exposes why feminism has always failed.

The irony is a woman WAS nominated for “Barbie” and it’s being overlooked cause it’s not the 2 white women that white women wanted.

And the other ironic thing is Best Actress is an all female category. What woman in that category do they want to be replaced??

by Anonymousreply 61January 25, 2024 4:39 AM

I find it ironic some are (rightfully) calling out white feminism on here but are shitting on Lily Gladstone in other threads, who very well could make history as the first Native American woman to win Best Actress.

by Anonymousreply 66January 25, 2024 5:17 AM

[quote] Whoopi Goldberg Says Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig Weren’t Snubbed by the Oscars: ‘There Are No Snubs…Not Everybody Gets a Prize’

Whoopi Goldberg is an Oscars legend, having won an Academy Award for “Ghost” and hosted the ceremony four times and served as an Academy board member. So perhaps moviegoers might want to listen to Goldberg when she says there are no such thing as Oscar snubs amid the uproar over Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie missing out on nominations for best director and best actress, respectively, at the 2024 Oscars.

“Barbie” earned a total of eight nominations, including best picture, and Gerwig is a nominee for screenwriting and so is Robbie as one of the film’s producers. And yet, shutting Gerwig out of best director and Robbie out of best actress has resulted in backlash against the Academy.

“The message of all of that is not lost on me, but one question I have — and maybe Whoopi is the only one that can answer this — when does it become a snub?” Sara Haines asked Goldberg on “The View” (via Entertainment Weekly). “I know the film, I know the greatness and the money, but that assumes someone else shouldn’t be in there.”

Goldberg answered by saying “everybody doesn’t win” and “you don’t get everything you want to get.”

“There are no snubs,” said added. “That’s what you have to keep in mind: Not everybody gets a prize, and it is subjective. Movies are subjective. The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting.”

Because Gerwig and Robbie were nominated for best director and best actress at the majority of Oscar pre-cursor awards, including the Golden Globes and Critic’s Choice Awards, many pundits thought their Oscar nominations would be a no-brainer, hence the snub outrage. Gerwig also got nominated at the Directors Guild of America awards. Their film’s $1.4 billion gross, the highest earner of 2023, combined with the critical acclaim “Barbie” received also led many to think Gerwig and Robbie wouldn’t be left out of these races.

Ryan Gosling, who earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor thanks to his performance as Ken, spoke out against the Oscars for snubbing Gerwig and Robbie.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” Gosling wrote in a statement. “Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

America Ferrara, who plays Gloria in “Barbie” and earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress, told Variety that it was “incredibly disappointing” to see Gerwig and Robbie’s names missing from the best director and best actress categories.

“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” Ferrera explained. “Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”

Even Hillary Clinton weighed in on the snubs, sending Gerwig and Robbie a message over X that read: “While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you. You’re both so much more than Kenough.”

“Barbie” is still very much in the running for best picture Oscar (although many pundits agree Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is the frontrunner), while Gerwig is a strong contender for best adapted screenplay alongside co-writer Noah Baumbach. The 2024 Oscars are set for Sunday, March 10.

It IS the virtue signaling to which you referred. They are speaking up so the audience ( in this case, feminists) will think that they are great people and will not cancel them the next time they have a picture. In private, they couldn't care less. What's Gosling going to say, "I overcame poor direction and an idiotic performance by my co-star? In all, they shouldn't have been nominated."

Why is no one outraged over Bradley Cooper's snub?

by Anonymousreply 86January 25, 2024 5:13 PM

I'm really tired of NYT headlines written that way. I can't put my finger on it, but they sound formulaic and low-effort. "Introductory prepositional phrase, comma, 'a' flat, boring noun phrase. "

Reposting my Barbie commentary here:

I hated Barbie. The only award that film deserves is Best Marketing, convincing people that this was some “must see” entertainment. It’s not even clear what the character of Barbie is; it reminded me of that SNL skit “she’s a floor wax and a dessert topping” or, for the more erudite amongst us, the Martin Crimp play, attempts on her life, nominally about how branding and marketing eclipses our humanity. That people found this dreck inspiring and empowering, despite its complete lack of artistry, is depressing. The script was regressive, it sounded like old Phil Donahue shows from the early 1970s, and, shockingly, had nothing insightful to say about gender, despite this being one of the most controversial and misunderstood subjects of our time - it’s not like there wasn’t room to craft something for the ages. But for all their cool cachet, turns out Gerwig & Baumbach are, no surprise, kind of lazy intellectuals. They never even dramatised their outline for the 2nd half of the film and just had characters speak the bullet points. It was hardly inventive. And Ryan Gosling was too old to play Ken and his schtick was grating. The whole gist of the film was “women dumb, men dumber.” Gerwig was already out of the director’s race and Robbie not getting Best Actress is in keeping with what most people thought in July upon the film’s release (“Really?? Best Actress?”), so the film has done well enough for what it is but obviously expectations had grown since then. Having nominated Gosling and Ferrara for acting in Barbie, they should’ve nominated Robbie just for being the cinematic icon she’s become in the role. Seems churlish not to have done so. But make no mistake, just last year Robbie was in three Box Office duds - two you probably can’t even name anymore they were so forgettable - and next year there’ll be more of these. These principals like Gerwig and Robbie can ride the wave of Barbie’s success but it’s a triumph of the brand and the marketing, far less about them, and maybe that’s what the industry-based Academy is acknowledging.

I’m fucking sick of all this Oscar banter !!!!! So what ?? Say it once . They were snubbed . They are still millionaires by making this very questionable movie !!!!

Get a grip . I was maybe going to see it on Amazon but now I’m too fuvking disgusting …. And fucking Ryan ex mouskateer Gosling — bitching and moaning about the snubbing

HE IS SO LUCKY TO HAVE HAD THE SUCCESS HE HAS HAD — go donate some millions to the homeless or be the second Oprah

But just fuck off and shit the fuck up

Ryan Gosling doesn't have the best judgment. Remember when he wanted Rachel McAdams fired from the movie "The Notebook? Can you imagine that movie without her? Clearly he's all looks and no brains, perfect for plastic Ken.

by Anonymousreply 92January 25, 2024 6:17 PM

Yes R92. Ryan lucked out with good movies and costars — Anthony Hopkins and Richard Gere to name a few

R88, all one has to do is see that the author of the article is the senior editor of diversity and inclusion for THR's Culture Shift to know what is written in it. The only thing surprising is that the senior editor for diversity and inclusion is not black.

Ten years from now, folks are gonna look back on this and be embarrassed: "I can't believe I actually got all bent out of shape over the fucking "Barbie" movie! Wtf was I thinking?!"

Isn't it time to just do away with awards? They're meaningless.

It's easy to be philosophical about it when you've already got an Oscar, Whoopi.

[quote] It's easy to be philosophical about it when you've already got an Oscar, Whoopi.

But it's not like she never felt the sting of being "snubbed."

Whoopi deserved the Best Actress Oscar for The Color Purple. Period.

Instead, Meryl Streep got it for Out of Africa.

Now THAT was wrong.

So Whoopi knows exactly how it feels.

The difference is that she didn't whine and cry about it.

Both Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman were snubbed for their superb performances in May/December, so....I mean, was anyone really expecting acting Oscar noms for Barbie before its huge theatrical success?

by Anonymousreply 100January 27, 2024 6:41 AM

I'm already tired of the manufactured outage about this movie. I hate to use the term "woke" the way the reich-wing does, but, God, all this woke outrage is exhausting.

[quote]I get annoyed when people talk of not being nominated as being a “snub”. Such entitlement!! Geez.

Clickbait word to create controversy where there is none. I hate it too.

R99, Meryl Street did not win for Out Of Africa. Geraldine Page won that year.
