Foolish or not, Americans are fascinated with the Royal Family and loved the Queen. Americans want to believe the fairytale. Trying to burst that bubble was a stupid move from a marketing standpoint.

Those two should have moved to the US and started a charity, kept things quiet and discreet, and kept good ties with the BFF, no matter what shit went down in the past.

Meghan should have insisted that as an American she didn't want a title ...and no title for the kids. Not even Princess Anne's kids have titles.

The problem was Harry is an idiot and fundamentally misunderstood his mother’s appeal. She spent 15ish years on the inside first. And she was naturally charming and looked great doing it. Markle had none of those qualities. Harry had the insider mystique but squandered it totally.

Diana was a superstar but her appeal was fading in the months (maybe even years) before her death. She must have been at a loose end to spend the summer with the Al Fayeds and toying with Dodi and the press.

And whoever had the idea at the Ritz of sending their usual car and driver off out the front with decoy Di and Dodi so the real couple could sneak out the back, driven by a drunk, was a prized idiot.
