by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 29, 2024 8:49 PM |
I actually just go to the webpage in my regular browser (Safari on macOS) and then click "View in Reader" which is part of the browser. It'll then give me the article I want without issues.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 29, 2024 8:52 PM |
OP, I will never remember those instructions.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 15, 2024 3:28 AM |
I can go to an archiv.ph page where someone else has already posted an article, but neither of my devices will let me go to the basic page.
Security concerns. Have turned off the ad-blocker and tried going incognito...no luck.

R15 I'm tech support for my mum who's in her 70s. She can use her phone and iPad for most things but she'll often find certain aspects of it too hard to use and will constantly ask me the same questions. I feel your pain...

Some useful information in this thread.

R18 here, I can't even use archive.org to access an old Washington Post article.
Fuck.

Can someone explain how to make giphy links work again? I miss them.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 19, 2024 10:25 AM |
Go to GitHub and download Bypass Paywalls. Add to Chrome in Windows or Kiwi browser in Android.
If you have a Mac or iPhone, reconsider your shitty life choices.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 19, 2024 10:42 AM |
OP, do you happen to know how to bypass state restrictions on a website?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 19, 2024 11:34 AM |
99% of the shit posted doesn't deserve any effort. If I click on the link and can't read it, I'm out. The wit level must be extremely high to exert any real effort.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 19, 2024 11:38 AM |
^ Seriously? You're so offended by a paywall that you won't read it instead of archiving it?
Didn't you ever sneak into a movie?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 19, 2024 11:45 AM |
r27 Who on earth said I was offended? Lazy and unmotivated would be more accurate.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 19, 2024 11:48 AM |
r25, you need a VPN. I recommend private internet access.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 19, 2024 11:54 AM |
You could also try this free, open source vpn.

12ftladder is no more. I was able to read quite a few articles before the creator shut it down.
Reader only lets me read part of an article sometimes.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | July 12, 2024 7:54 AM |
R31, archive . ph is not dead.
I use it specifically to get around the NYT (who I can't stand these days) and the Wall Street Journal (whom I've always hated). Suck it, Wall Street Journal!

It's not just eldergays who need guidance.
The younger generations seem unable to master the obscure tool called "Google" so will come to the DL and ask a question that they could easily and already have asked and answered by typing the same question into "Google". Or they'll type "I'm too lazy to look it up" by which time they could have looked it up with fewer key strokes.
Why is this? Do you need an audience? If a millennial entered a question into Google in the woods, did it happen?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 29, 2024 10:26 PM |
Your overthinking this says a lot, r51.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 30, 2024 3:27 AM |
Thanks R52 - your response makes absolutely no sense, which says everything.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 30, 2024 4:02 AM |
It wouldn't make sense to people who don't know how to write to a target audience, but I can write you a post on how to do that if you need it. 😘❤️
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 30, 2024 4:14 AM |
All good R54!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 30, 2024 4:27 AM |
Thank you OP, I was just thinking about this the other day. I was meaning to ask someone who posted a link but then I forgot all about it. I have taken a screenshot of the instructions.

r19, I feel your pain too- my sister, BIL, and I are my 80 year old mother's tech support. when all 3 of us can't fix something, she'll relent and go to the Apple geniuses (which aren't in the San Diego area). Then she'll say how stupid we are, which we'll rebut with, "Well the Apple Geniuses are stupid as well, because they couldn't fix your problem".
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 21, 2024 2:18 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 8, 2025 11:52 AM |
It's up to OPs and commenters to provide archive links so at least half the respondents can read the material easily. If you can't provide an archive link to a pay walled article, just fuck off.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | January 8, 2025 12:00 PM |
Nobody owes anybody shit around here.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | January 8, 2025 12:01 PM |
R64, it makes more sense for the person linking to a paywalled article to provide an archive link. Even to sites that require a free login in exchange for spam. We don't all subscribe to every title.
Grow up and get over yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | January 8, 2025 12:08 PM |
Pay them, then.

OP, at 61 I qualify as one of your "Eldergay brethren." Thanks for the tutorial. I've known how to do that for quite some time. Generally speaking, I've known how to navigate technology for quite a long time as well, even, I dare say, before you were a toddler or even a twinkle in your dear father's eyes. It's not just my crotchety, grumpy grey-haired self or my antiquarian brethren that you should address. DataLoungers of all ages might appreciate your sage before your years' wisdom.

Dickhead at r66, do you know how many different media titles are linked to on this site? Fucking heaps. Enough that I'm not even going to sign up for free memberships and get spammed.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | January 9, 2025 8:55 AM |
No, numbskull. We're not all your fuckig little girl Fridays here, r65. See r67 and do the work yourself if you can't access something. Entitled little bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | January 9, 2025 8:59 AM |
Fuck off, 72.
The Guardian is the only title I'll pay for and receive emails from. OPs can copy and paste or archive.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | January 9, 2025 11:22 AM |
Nobody's asking you to pay for anything. We're just saying that sometimes you'll just need do the archive link for yourself if the OP doesn't do it. And if you're feeling especially kind and courteous, you can share it here, too.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | January 9, 2025 12:07 PM |
R74, r66 did say to pay for them.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 9, 2025 12:09 PM |
No, I was r66, and I was saying pay the OP's of thread who don't include archive links as a service to you. Apologies for the ambiguity.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 9, 2025 12:10 PM |
Jesus, if someone links to something at least make it easily accessible, FFS.
Fucking copy and paste, then.
