What kind of planned abdominal surgery keeps you in the hospital for two weeks?
That sounds more like a burst appendix than anything "planned."

Neither Kate nor Meghan are in line to the throne, r4.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 17, 2024 1:19 PM |
It sounds like some kind of female issue. Uterine cancer? Hysterectomy? Pancreas? Colon? Two weeks in hospital seems like a lot. Usually they like to get you in an out post operative. Unless you have to undergo follow up treatment. If they hadn't said abdominal, I'd have wondered about a mastectomy.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 17, 2024 1:20 PM |
She's finally having the much, MUCH needed gastric sleeve. The long stay wouldn't be needed if she weren't so fat.

Sounds like she had an hysterectomy.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 17, 2024 1:30 PM |
Hysterectomies don't necessitate anything like 10-14 days in hospital. More like 1-3 days.

Apparently not returning to her duties until Easter...
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 17, 2024 1:37 PM |
A total hysterectomy will keep you in hospital for more than 1-3 days. That operation is painful and hard to recover from. Pain control will be something they focus on.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 17, 2024 1:38 PM |
She'll get an epidural, no doubt. No way will they let a future queen be zoinked out on opioids for so long.
It sounds like some kind of female issue. Uterine cancer? Hysterectomy? Pancreas? Colon? Two weeks in hospital seems like a lot.
You're usually home quickly after a hysterectomy, unless there's a serious complication. I've had several abdominal surgeries with long hospitalizations. Those were for intestine removal due to inflammatory bowel disease. If she's been in good health until recently, I'd worry more about the potential for cancer than something like emergency surgery due to Crohn's or UC.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 17, 2024 1:41 PM |
R13, not true. My sister had a total hysterectomy (not laparoscopic) years ago and was in the hospital for 3 days. Unless this is something that British hospitals do, no way was it something like that.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 17, 2024 1:42 PM |
Two weeks is very long, even for a royal or VIP. Doctors always want the patient to be discharged to finish recovery at home whenever possible, to avoid hospital infections and the like - all clinics and hospitals, no matter how posh, are full of germs.
Something is up here. I wonder about the Crohn's angle here. She's been a bit thin for a long time. It would explain her somewhat light workload as well. Either way, wish her luck. And, with keeping this private - there will be leaks about what's wrong with her, inevitably.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 17, 2024 1:43 PM |
Appendix removal they send you home that day or the next, same with most hysterectomies now.
I'm guessing this is something like ovarian or colon cancer with extensive removal and she needs time to adjust to a stoma.
This is a very long hospital stay by today's standards. Whatever is going on, it's serious. My heart goes out to her and her family.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 17, 2024 1:46 PM |
Ischemic bowels, maybe? That's pretty serious, yet non-cancerous.
"In chronic ischaemic bowel, gradual narrowing of the bowel arteries can lead to central and upper abdominal pain after eating. When this is severe, patients avoid eating and lose weight."

by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 17, 2024 1:51 PM |
R19 may be onto something. Someone elsewhere mentioned ectopic pregnancy leading to radical hysterectomy, but that's pretty extreme.
It has to be something serious, to warrant the long hospital stay and the Palace admitting to it in their press release. Because most average Britons barely get more than a few days for 99% of most surgeries. Even the wealthy, who might get a longer-than-average stay, wouldn't get two weeks unless it was really justified (see comment about hospital-stay related infections, upthread).
They risk a lot of negative blowback from the public if it turns out it was an average operation, say appendix or simple gallbladder removal, and she is seen as "loitering" in hospital, in an era when most Britons are on long wait lists for even basic treatment and procedures. They had to have thought about this.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 17, 2024 1:53 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 17, 2024 1:57 PM |
Maybe a burst appendix? That’s super serious and would require long stay. The fact they’re saying it’s “planned” surgery is weird. Why would she have to cancel engagements if it was planned in advance?
Of course it could mean, her appendix burst and so we planned the surgery 10 min ago.
My guess it was an emergency situation and not something like a cancer diagnosis, which rarely requires emergency surgery. But allows days/weeks for patient to prep.

OK. Not cancer. But someone said Ischemic bowel? She's painfully thin. IMO when you stay in hospital t hat long and surgery is part of it, it seems more like they're adding something. So maybe it does have something to do with the colon, and she has a colonoscopy bag. It could involve removing part of her colon or treating it and it requires time to heal. If they are giving her something new, they are going to monitor it to see if her body rejects it. Ten days to 14 in hospital is extreme and so is the at home recovery period.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 17, 2024 2:26 PM |
This truly is a damned if they do/damned if they don’t moment for Harry/Meghan. If they don’t issue a statement of well wishes, they’ll appear cold/unfeeling. If they do, will appear to be making the news about themselves. Will be interesting to see which route their PR team chooses.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 17, 2024 2:28 PM |
Yes, they do r47. There has been endless press about the lengthy wait times for the NHS, for MD appointments, procedures, treatments, you name it, for Britons of every status and stripe. Long waits for non-emergency surgeries as well, across the board. It got worse during the Covid era....if it turns out that Catherine had a more simple procedure - say, a standard hysterectomy - and got a 10 to 14 day stay, there will absolutely be blowback and public negative response. Guaranteed.

In 2016 my eldest sister was admitted to a women's hospital for treatment of severe chronic fibroids; they'd had caused such severe anemia that when her PCP saw her labs he asked her how in hell she was capable of functioning at all, let alone excel in her high-stress, long hours job. My poor sister bled ALL the time, no exaggeration. Heavily. So she'd become used to feeling drained and awful, and just kept it moving. Doc called for ambulance and sent her straight to hospital.
Ob/Gyn removed several large fibroids, one of them softball-sized, and decided to do a partial hysterectomy, leaving the ovaries intact to avoid full-on menopause. When he started sewing her back up, Sister started bleeding uncontrollably from the uterus, and Dr. had to perform an emergency full hysterectomy. She was on the table over four hours.
From a standard fibroid removal procedure that would've been an in-and-out thing, to a ten-day hospital stay, four of them in the Definitive Observational Unit. Lickety-split.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 17, 2024 2:41 PM |
Ischemic bowel is unlikely at her age. Otherwise kind of silly to speculate although it was probably an open abdomen procedure. Laparoscopic procedures have quick recovery times. So it could be pretty serious.

I just read the official statement and it’s really quite something and worrisome. If it were a common operation-like hysterectomy—they would have named it if only to prevent speculation.
The fact that they’re giving no details…including about the state of her health…is concerning. Saying the surgery went well does not equate to a statement about her health.
No one spend two weeks in hospital unless very seriously ill. They have palaces where I’m sure she could be given full nursing care. The fact they want her to remain in the hospital must mean she needs critical care for a while.

by Anonymous | reply 74 | January 17, 2024 3:08 PM |
I agree r69. By “planned” I bet they mean she’s had symptoms for awhile, and they “planned” to take care of whatever she had. Or Does anyone think this is a Melania thing? Tummy tuck and other stuff under the guise of surgery? I don’t think so, they could actually do that in the palace, they have a full hospital suite.
Or maybe she was having something done and it went awry?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 17, 2024 3:08 PM |
Telegraph: Royal sources said the Prince of Wales planned to combine being by both his wife and their children’s sides throughout the recovery process. He will also, therefore, postpone a number of engagements as he supports his family and will not undertake official duties while the Princess is in hospital, or during the immediate period following her return home to Windsor.
"The London Clinic is an unusual choice for the Princess, who was admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital - long favoured by senior royals - when she suffered with Hyperemesis Gravidarum during pregnancy. A Care Quality Commission report published in December 2021 following an inspection of The London Clinic, found that its surgical services “required improvement”. The surgery’s leadership was found to be “inadequate” with frequent concerns being raised."
So does that suggest there's a speciality involved that required them to go to Last Chance General?
by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 17, 2024 3:09 PM |
Telegraph: (interesting): The Princess was not rushed to hospital, the Telegraph can confirm. Sources said it was not something that developed over the weekend, suggesting it has been planned for at least a few days, if not more.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 17, 2024 3:10 PM |
Telegraph: "The Telegraph understands that Kensington Palace has not ruled out more details about the Princess’s surgery being revealed in due course. Sources noted that it was the Princess’s private medical information and so was a matter entirely for her. However, it is thought that as and when she is ready to talk about it, she may opt to do so."
From the official statement: "It added: “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private. "
So does that sound like some embarrassing bum thing where they have to remove yards and yards and yards of intestine and now she's bagging it?

2) the surgery was planned
2) it's not cancer
3) it's probably not laproscopic surgery, or she would not have such a long hospital stay
4) It will have a long recovery time
5) The palace does not want to say what it was yet
6) It's serious enough that her husband and parents are canceling plans to support her through her recovery
What could it be? Doctors and nurses, any opinions?

R80, we only know it was abdominal, not necessarily gastro. The abdomen contains the digestive organs, but also the spleen, kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas, and organs of the urinary system. Sometimes they include the repdroductive organs so maybe saying abodminal is a PR dodge to protect her privacy and online doctors.
Worth noting is that there was an expectation they were to go to Rome this spring... not officially announced but substantially reported, including confirmed by The Telegraph a couple days before Christmas. So whatever has happened here wasn't an issue at that point. She hasn't been seen in public in 23 days.

A 10-14 day stay right in the hospital means critical care access and constant monitoring. That is the only possible reason because I can't believe the Royals don't have the resources to have a hospital like set up right at home. No one wants to stay in a hospital that long. No one. Hospitals are gross. She could get worse just by being in a hospital. And can you even imagine how disruptive it will be what with all the security? They won't be able to keep it secret for too long. Charlotte and George are too old to not be told what's going on, and William and Catherine have friends, and her family has friends. You better believe someone will talk. A hysterectomy, for Kate, would be a huge deal, PR-wise. She already has 3 children, but a hysterectomy would mean closing up shop for heirs to the throne (coming from Kate, at least).
Point is: I think anything hysterectomy-related would be lied about and kept secret.
No, a hysterectomy shouldn't take 2 weeks in the hospital, though.

The royals have been treated as in-patients in hospitals for decades, for serious and minor ailments. Prince Phillip spent a longer period in hospital in his last year, as opposed to having medical staff called into The Palace.
And she’s in The London Clinic which has a concierge service and an award-winning chef, all hospitals may have a gross side to them, but this one is very comfortable.
She may be very ill indeed, or she may just be getting an enviable level of care for a fairly minor issue. Let’s hope it’s the latter.

My guess is that it's something gastrointestinal. She could be removing some of her small intestine or even part of her colon. I do think she has an eating disorder and a ton of stress, despite her reputation for being lazy. Hence, GI issues.
No way it's a burst appendix; that would be done and dusted, already. That's an emergency surgery.

The estimated length of stay for surgery varies from hospital to hospital and would take into account the status of the patient. For the future Queen of England, a ten day hospital stay estimate after major surgery sounds conservative, not dire. She will have her own ward, every luxury, and a break from baldy, who won the battle over George's schooling, and the kids. If she's discharged before ten days, great, but if she had to stay longer than the LOS estimate, all hell would break loose.

Sources confirmed to the Telegraph she and William were to visit Rome this spring. If something of this scale were on the books, it never would have gotten out there or would have been denied.

Diverticulitis. Ulcerative colitis. Pancreatitis (as opposed to pancreatic cancer.) A cardiac issue. Meningioma or another brain tumor. I hope it's nothing with a bad prognosis.
All could necessitate a lengthy stay. All are potential illnesses that could sideline a previously healthy 40-something-year-old woman and could require an extended hospitalization depending on her overall condition.

R146 Mine was 7 nights (partial hemi-colectomy, removed 11 inches of bowel) in the hospital because of the serious pain meds involved post-op. If it's that or any of a dozen other conditions, concomitant illnesses or conditions can make the stay longer, as could an infection.
And I'm not a princess - they'll take good care of her. They did give me a private room, though.
My guess - abdominoplasty aka tummy tick and perhaps breast augmentation
What tummy does she have to tuck? She's tight as a board, she must have totally flat abs. Not an ounce of flab there to snip or tuck. The breasts I can see, but she's have those done while "on vacation" - no way would Kensington Palace send out a four paragraph public health alert on her for some flighty cosmetic surgery.
Re a ruptured appendix: didn't Stephen Colbert just have this, last month? it was serious, and he was in hospital for well over a week I think (someone else can look this up). As the future Queen, they would estimate a 10 day+ stay for this.

by Anonymous | reply 156 | January 17, 2024 5:27 PM |
A 10-14 day stay right in the hospital means critical care access and constant monitoring. That is the only possible reason because I can't believe the Royals don't have the resources to have a hospital like set up right at home. No one wants to stay in a hospital that long.
Royals used to have hospital-type care set up at home, in the palace, but that was decades ago. Modern medical care means a stay in hospital for certain serious procedures and recuperation periods. A home set-up, for example, doesn't have immediate life-saving measures like a crash cart or defib paddles, or a surgical suite nearby.

The royals have the wherewithal to set Kate up at home if she was having a standard recovery.
Something must have occurred during the surgery which left her in a critical-enough state that she required hospital care, i.e., they must fear that her condition may destabilize and that she may have to be whisked into surgery. Something serious has occurred.
Notice the statement issued makes no assurances guaranteeing her recovery, merely a timeframe for how her recovery should hopefully transpire.

Had a full hysterectomy and went home the next day. They use robots now for this with small incisions. Long stay could be just a status thing, or it was a full exploratory scalpel incision, or there are other organs involved. If they operate on the intestines they keep you in the hospital until your bowels are functioning properly again. Can't blame her for not wanting the gory details to get out.
by Anonymous | reply 221 | January 17, 2024 7:42 PM |
No one wants to stay in a hospital that long. No one. Hospitals are gross. She could get worse just by being in a hospital.
100% correct, R102. My sister (the one I posted about @R60) among other things, is an RN. The hospital where she had her surgery is very highly rated, and specializes in women and neonatal care. At least 4 times during her stay, she and I called Hospital Services to complain about lack of cleaning in her suite. Floors not mopped, trashcans not emptied (when they were, no fresh can liner replaced).
One afternoon when I arrived to visit, her Dr had just left after reaming HS, Nursing Services, AND Sister; he'd caught her out of bed and on her hands and knees putting antibacterial foam on paper towels and mopping up her own bathroom. She just could not take the sight and feel of her toilet and floor smeared all over with BLOOD from her female parts (she was still leaking blood post-surgery). She wasn't even supposed to get up and go to bathroom by herself, let alone CLEAN HER OWN BATHROOM, but even using the call button she couldn't get duty nurse to help her with toilet needs.
Hospitals are scary places.

It’s not just 10-14 days in the hospital. She’s off work until after Easter. That’s two and a half months.
It can’t be cosmetic. It’s one thing to try and hide cosmetic surgery. It’s quite another to have cosmetic surgery but claim you are ill. If the truth got it her reputation would never recover.
I’m think it has to be:
1. Eating disorder or substance abuse or severe mental health crisis or all of them and it requires extended inpatient treatment. She doesn’t look at death’s door thin, but she is extremely lean and could have dropped more weight since her last appearance and done it in an unhealthy way.
2. Surgery that was not expected to be too serious, but went drastically wrong and she had a stroke or something that is going to require rehab.
3. Cancer. When she changed her hairstyle recently and it looked like a wig I wondered about this.
Could be both 2 and 3.

I was in the hospital for a long stay after going septic during a simple surgical procedure. My bowels were nicked during surgery. Going septic that is what happens and it can kill you.
Another possibility would be Diverticulitis and the issues that can crop up when it becomes serious. Removal of a section of your bowels could warrant an extended hospital stay. For more information on the differences between diverticulosis and diverticulitis, plus related treatments and issues that can occur when it becomes serious, check out the attached link. This is also something I personally experienced.

With that timeframe: she’s either having inpatient treatment for an eating disorder or substance abuse. Or she has metastatic cancer and needs to recover from surgery and then start chemo or radiation right away.

Everyone giving their experiences with hospitalization times here is American. Other countries health care systems don't necessarily toss patients out right after major surgeries. My friend's mother had an uncomplicated abdominal hysterectomy in Germany and was in hospital for just over a week.
From the NHS website: "A hysterectomy is a major operation. You can be in hospital for up to 5 days after surgery, and it can take about 6 to 8 weeks to fully recover."
Granted that 10 days to 2 weeks still seems excessive, she is a future queen. She may also end up being discharged sooner. The Palace would probably prefer to give an estimate of a longer hospital stay than have to later extend it if she had some complications. Given her age, my guess is hysterectomy for something benign like fibroids or excessive bleeding. Uterine cancer would be less likely (but still possible) in a multiparous, slim woman in her early 40s.

My sister was supposed to be out 3 months post-surgery, but begged her Dr to let her return to work at 2 months. He cleared her to do half-days for the remainder.
It isn't at all unusual.

Something like Crohn's or diverticulitis is very painful. Wish her a comfortable recovery.

The statement is a little odd. It almost but doesn’t quite suggest that she wants to keep the details private as a way to maintain normalcy for her kids. But how would choosing to disclose or not disclose a bowel condition impact her kids’ normalcy?
And then at the end it says that she looks forward to reinstating as many events as possible, as soon as possible. Not that she looks forward to a resumption of her duties.
It doesn’t come across optimistically to me.
The more I think about it, it doesn’t seem that it could be an eating disorder or substance abuse or any kind of mental health issue unless as a consequence of the condition she actually needed abdominal surgery. They aren’t going to flat out invent something about abdominal surgery. She had some procedure done above her knees and below her neck.

by Anonymous | reply 246 | January 17, 2024 8:31 PM |
They call the Princess of Wales "Kate" in the media because her title now (Princess of Wales) and her previous title (Duchess of Cambridge) and even her actual first name (Catherine) all have so many letters in them that they're unwieldy for headline writers. So she has always been just "Kate" for catchy tabloid headlines, and so "Kate" is how she is known to the public.
I guess since the public knows her best as "Kate," to refer to her in a longer or less sensational pieces requires referring to her by a first and last name. "Kate Cambridge" was just temporary (as everyone knew), and so also is "Kate Wales"--and they both sound very stuffy. So they kept Middleton.
She will one day just be "The Queen" which will make everything easier. Short enough for tabloid headlines (which "The Princess of Wales" is not), but it will be still correct.

My friend had diverticulitis last summer, without operation, and stayed for a week. They kept monitoring her and the infection to avoid bring operated and she couldn’t eat for so she had to be intubated. It was a private hospital so they had no pressure to release her, on the contrary.
Hope she gets better and is not serious.

My sister had fibroids. She bled a lot. Hemorrhaged blood. It was so bad she had to lie down with her legs and feet elevated and an ice pack on her stomach. They put her in the hospital for an "ablation?" to remove the fibroids but they ended up removing her uterus because things got messy. She needed a transfusion, too. She was in the hospital for about 5-6 days. I Remember because my mother had to baby sit and my t wo nephews were terrible little shits. Now maybe Catherine has some underlying medical condition that requires extra care if she is undergoing surgery. They may have discovered she has a heart condition or something.

1. An offer to fill in for some of the more desirable and high profile engagements (even though they are very busy and it’s very inconvenient), provided the security, transportation, and lodging arrangements of of an appropriate caliber.
2. A statement of acknowledgment and support for the fear Will and Kate must be experiencing, even though it’s not as scary as the high speed car chase they barely survived.

This is about Kate having surgery etc. and given the level of trust that does not exist between the two families, I doubt very much that many if any details on her medical condition are known beyond the closest family members. Particularly the ones who will be doing more work, like Sophie and Edward.
It's funny how news comes out. I can recall several occasions when the family was walking from church stopping to chat with well wishers, and Kate or William or Charles or whomever would mention something that ended up being news worthy. Nothing earth shaking but till. I have a feeling will learn a bit more in the weeks ahead.

"Planned " simply means they were able to schedule it. It means it was not technically an emergency. If it were described as "unscheduled" that means it's an emergency. For all we know she may have been under doctor's care and being treated for weeks or months and tested and finally determined she had to get surgery ASAP, so it was scheduled, as in "Your Highness, we'd like to get this treated as soon as possible. We can get you in next week."

I was feeling very sick one day and a friend brought over all these over the counter medications and I just got sicker. My friend called an ambulance and I was admitted immediately and given all kinds of tests. At 9pm a doctor comes in and says I have to have my gallbladder removed at 11 that night. I said can't I make an appointment and come another day? I wanted to go home. She looked at me in shock and said that would be a really bad idea.
At 5am a Dr who I had never seen before comes in trailed by 4 or 5 very young interns and says you were in very bad shape. And these young kids are nodding yeah. They released me that morning and I took public transportation home.

King Charles is incapacitated.
Kate Middleton won't be able to do anything until April (maybe).
William won't be able to do anything while Kate Middleton is incapacitated.
Who remains to take care of Royal Family duties?
Only Anne, Edward, and Sophie.

The Times: It is understood that her condition does not involve cancer, but given the length of time she is expected to be in hospital, and her expected slow return to royal duties, her surgery is unlikely to have been minor.
Abdominal surgery may mean the stomach, appendix, kidneys or bowel, or the reproductive system. Patients having abdominal surgery typically need a general anaesthetic, and surgery may be open, involving a five to seven-inch incision, or minimally invasive, in which case several tiny openings are made through which the surgeon inserts tools to operate.

As so many have already said, she's had 3 successful pregnancies (with normal spacing). This would suggest she is not anorexic. She looks slim, but healthy. If she does have Crohn's disease or UC, I sincerely hope she will ultimately acknowledge it to bring attention to the disease and stigma. If she's just having a hysterectomy for fibromyomas or excessive bleeding, she can keep that to herself. Everyone knows someone who's had that.

Yeah this sounds like bowel surgery. It takes forever for the bowel to "wake up" after that procedure and they don't let you go until you have a bowel movement or at the very least pass gas. It takes forever because you are on a clear liquid diet for many days to give the bowel time to heal. 10 days to 2 weeks is pretty normal.

Because it is, Blanche, it is. My wife had a full incision hysterectomy and was out of the hospital in less than 24 hours and functionally recovered, except for lifting, in two weeks. Once your uterus is gone, it’s just gone and you don’t miss it. With a resection your intestines have to wake up and then you have to shit through the incision site and newly created stoma. Not sure if you are aware of this, but fecal matter and wounds aren’t a great combination so there’s a significant and probably unavoidable risk of sepsis following the surgery. It also means the area stays inflamed for longer since you can’t let it properly rest.
I have no idea what the future queen has or doesn’t have, but moon face hasn’t been an indication of Crohn’s in a couple decades. Most patients get treated with biologics and there is a special corticosteroid now that targets the intestines and leaves the rest of your body alone.

Apparently hair loss is associated with IBD. Which makes cancer seem more remote, especially given the explicit denials.
She debuted the wig / really obvious hair extensions in September. So if it was cancer it would mean that she was having a somewhat rushed, if planned, surgery around six months after initiating the treatment causing hair loss. That would probably be bad.
Whatever it is, it’s obviously no walk in the park.

Many of us are familiar with both of those things and their recoveries. I've had several bowel surgeries. My large intestine's gone. Calling it onerous would be an understatement.
I don't know what's wrong with Kate. But if it involved an ectopic pregnancy or hysterectomy, a two-week hospitalization afterward and months of recovery would mean she experienced complications beyond anything typically encountered in those scenarios.

This is the UK NHS info on hysterectomy surgery:
A hysterectomy is a major operation. You can be in hospital for up to 5 days after surgery, and it can take about 6 to 8 weeks to fully recover.
Recovery times can also vary depending on the type of hysterectomy.
Rest as much as possible during this time and do not lift anything heavy, such as bags of shopping. You need time for your abdominal muscles and tissues to heal.
People in the US shouldn't try to compare their health care system with those of other countries. It sounds like in the US they try to chuck you out of hospital as quickly as possible. In the UK and most developed countries there's also universal paid sick leave, which may not always be much depending on your employer but it's something, and you can also use your annual vacation days (usually 28 days fully paid a year). Taking 3 months out for a hysterectomy is not unusual in the UK.
I think with Kate they're adding some extra time in the public announcement to err on the side of caution. I don't know for sure if she's having a hysterectomy but it fits with the general time for such operations and post-op recuperation in the UK. American posters need to be aware that things aren't necessarily done in other countries the way they are done in the US.
by Anonymous | reply 395 | January 18, 2024 1:15 PM |
I also wonder if she’ll be discharged sooner than announced so as to make it seem less serious - “She did so well so we’re releasing her in 7 days instead of 10.”
by Anonymous | reply 396 | January 18, 2024 1:19 PM |
She had severe morning sickness while pregnant which is generally a favorable indicator if a successful pregnancy.
R355, let's put Kate aside for a moment. With people in general, whether it be cancer, addiction, neurological or psychological disorders, etc., there is no right or wrong way to look or behave. Not all heroin addicts are skinny, people with eating disorders can appear to be healthy, some cancer patients don't look sick, etc. Nothing is one size fits all and the stereotypes we have in our minds are just that. I say this to say, that if someone you care about is ever diagnosed with an illness or someone suggests something may be wrong, please don't make excuses as to why it can't be XYZ because it can mean the difference between life and death.
The risk of hyperemesis, or severe nausea and vomiting throughout pregnancy, was more than doubled in anorexic women. This can cause electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, and further weight loss.
by Anonymous | reply 397 | January 18, 2024 1:22 PM |
I remember after delivering Charlotte, she left the hospital the same day. So I’m not buying the “they keep people hospitalized for longer in the UK” story. Nobody stays 2 weeks for a hysterectomy.
She either had a major cancer operation, or she didn’t have surgery but is in rehab for an eating disorder.

R307. The idea that she is anorexic is so bizarre. She is constantly in the public eye. She does not look unnaturally thin at all. She has had three successful pregnancies. She has managed to remain heaithy and active despite being”anorexic” for almost a decade Next you will claim anorexics can weigh 600 pounds
Decades of increasingly widespread obesity really have warped people’s perceptions.
by Anonymous | reply 400 | January 18, 2024 1:43 PM |
If someone mentions eating disorders, your brain might automatically envision a white, thin woman with thinning hair, brittle nails, and a pale complexion. Not only has this been the stereotype of what having an eating disorder looks like, but it also acts as the stereotype for anorexia nervosa (AN). Yet, AN affects people from all walks of life. It can present differently across all different bodies, and harmful stereotypes such as these can interfere with the diagnosis of AN.
Despite common misconceptions, an individual may be seriously ill with a restrictive eating disorder without an outwardly recognizable physical sign of the illness. The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate the perspectives of individuals who have previously battled a restrictive eating disorder who were considered “not sick enough” by others (e.g., peers, families, healthcare professionals) at some point during their illness, and to understand the perceived impact on the illness and recovery. Such misconceptions are potentially damaging, and have been previously linked with delayed help-seeking and poorer clinical outcomes.

Odd reasoning given the prevalence of anorexia among singers, actors, models, dancers, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 403 | January 18, 2024 2:07 PM |
I was under the impression that anorexia is normally caught and treated sooner these days. And because it’s identified and treated, even if only semi-successfully, you don’t see walking skeletons very often. I used to see women who were obviously anorexic every once in a while in the 1980’s and maybe 1990’s. But the last time I saw it was over a decade ago. I could be completely off base. That’s just my layperson’s observation.
I give Kate a lot of credit for gaining weight during pregnancy and delivering heathy, full-term babies despite the difficulty holding food down and her obvious weight concerns.
She isn’t necessarily an unhealthy weight and has some muscle, but she is also pretty obviously very weight and body conscious. It’s clear to me from the way she dresses and the shoes she wears. The jeans are always skin tight, emphasizing her (admittedly great) legs. She may be very covered up, but never, ever any excessive bulk. Almost always the very high heels - the same frame with 4 extra inches of height looks slimmer.
I don’t think an outside observer can draw the line between a very disciplined commitment to maintaining a very lean physique and disordered eating. It’s not crazy to say she has an eating disorder and it’s not crazy to say she doesn’t. But it’s a little irrational to insist that either is impossible.

Tummy tuck, which is major surgery. After 3 kids and you get to a certain age, your flat stomach goes away no matter what you do. She’s examined by tabloids every single day. She wants to look good. And why not? She’s got the money and her looks are essential to her position.
You know what my mother told me years ago? Actors and actresses got to take cosmetic surgery as a deduction on their taxes because it was job-related. You can start with this partial list of notable people who've publicly discussed theirs. The vast majority do not 'come out' in the press, since it invites unwanted scrutiny and can have lasting personal and professional implications. Anyone who isn't a belligerent anorexic teenager themself is already aware of that, though.

It’s possible she has uterine tumors. They’re not cancerous but my understanding from women is that they’re excruciatingly painful.
There’s also endometriosis, another very painful abdominal issue (again, so I’m told).

Former wiglet wearer here...yes, that really does look like a wig. It hasn't been trimmed or fitted correctly to her head. So that would suggest hair loss. But I think chemo hair loss, it it were that, would cause here eyebrows and eyelashes to fall out.

A friend of mine had a hysterectomy some years back,(routine) and the doctors didn't realize that they had nicked her bowels in the surgery. They sent her home after one day and for three days she was at home getting increasingly sick. Finally it was a full-fledged crisis when she went back to the hospital. Of course it had gone septic. (Peritonitis) They ended up having to resection her colon and she was in intensive care for nearly a week and then in regular hospital for another day, and it was touch and go whether or not she would survive initially. So it might have been something like that.

by Anonymous | reply 481 | January 18, 2024 9:55 PM |
I don’t think it’s a wig because in some of the pictures of her bike outing she is wearing a helmet without a care and you can see the wind blowing her hair around and it does not look unnatural to me. The bangs could be to hide wrinkles or surgical scars while they heal.
Whatever is wrong with her is critical and not planned.
by Anonymous | reply 482 | January 18, 2024 9:58 PM |
It's most visible in the second picture at R460's link. You can see about half an inch of her real hair below where the wig starts.
The wig's been placed too far back on her hairline. It should be placed right at the front of the hairline and then trimmed and thinned, otherwise you get the "headband" look that Kate's sporting.

I don't suppose there's much chance it was anybody else, being driven [italic]in[/italic] the vicinity of the hospital but not [italic]to[/italic] it?
In any event I can definitely imagine that having got her from Sandringham, where she'd been looking perfectly well three days before, but suddenly so acutely requiring care that they took her all the way to London rather than a nearby hospital, without anybody noticing, then the natural next thing to do would be load her into a convoy with lights flashing. I think we should obviously work forward on the basis it could not be anybody but her and that the situation, however grave in the moment, stabilized happily to allow for major surgery almost a month later.
There's no other reasonable explanation.
Harry, Andrew, and Princess Beatrice Will Not Stand in for for King Charles
Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and Prince Andrew’s daughter, Princess Beatrice, will not act as substitutes for King Charles, the Times of London reports. All three remain so-called counselors of state—meaning members of the royals who can stand in for Charles if the latter is ill or abroad—but the Times reports that the government bill defining the role includes a provision that only “working members of the royal family will be called on to act as counsellors of state.”
That effectively rules out Harry, Andrew, and Beatrice from ever performing the roles, as none are working members of the family. In the Counsellors of State Act 2022, Charles added both his sister and brother, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, to the list of family members who can act for him.
The Times says Anne and Edward will be counsellors for the rest of their lives, while Harry, Andrew and Beatrice will gradually be replaced when Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—come of age.

I am wondering if she is/was indeed pregnant and needed some kind of emergency procedure as well as treatment for her severe morning sickness. The "out of sight until Easter" bit is making me wonder if this time they do not want to announce a pregnancy too early as they have been forced to do in the past, especially in light of whatever issue she is having. Waiting until Easter gives her privacy for the first trimester.
Having said all that, I also think that a baby at 42 when you already have 3 very healthy and thriving children is nuts, but the above is my current theory.

I feel it's possibly cancer. It just seems like there's something more serious than a D&C or anything regarding the gastrointestinal system. I think the bet is better made on the reproductive system.

I'm on the fence: very much could be bowel issues that have exacerbated over the years or it could be reproductive issues and/or cancerous related.

I don't live in the UK, nor have i ever followed the Royals but i hope it's something far worse than what we've been supposing. I wish her no ill will.

Not only is Kate one of the most gazed at people on the planet, unlike pop stars, actresses and other celebrities, she also meets ordinary members of the public up close all the time, is regularly at events where thousands of members of the public can see her and talk to her and take photos and videos of her, as well as TV cameras and news photographers, and also regularly meets politcians, bishops, foreign dignitaries, public officials, etc. So I think if she had an eating disorder it would have been observable to some of those people at least. It's doubtful she would even be able to make all these public appearances and be attentive to everyone, friendly, open, listening, responding, always being on top form.
by Anonymous | reply 547 | January 19, 2024 8:17 AM |
I think I stayed in the hospital for about two weeks after I had my colectomy. Part of it was making sure that I wasn't going to have another crisis, but I also had to get my stoma functioning and used to dealing with it. And because I'd been so sick leading up to the surgery, I was so weak they considered putting me in a rehab before sending me home, but I pushed myself hard enough with physical therapy that I went home with a visiting nurse.
If she does have some kind of bowel condition, the timeline fits.

R542’s theory makes sense. A failed pregnancy would be unlikely to require such a long hospital stay and recovery period. But maybe they did surgery on the fetus and now they are trying to get some nutrients into her and then she’s going to be on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy.
That would mean the wig is just a coincidence, but that’s possible. She doesn’t look at all pregnant in the photos from Christmas, though.
All things considered, it seems like some type of cancer, probably bowel, or IBD are most likely. But all three - pregnancy, cancer, and IBD-related surgery that involves poop issues and maybe a permanent or temporary stoma - would explain why they aren’t just saying exactly what is wrong.
My guess is IBD based on
(1) The explicit denial of cancer (although I’m not giving that much weight).
(2) In photos of her as a very young adult it seems like her hairline moves up and down a little bit. There are 2-3 photos that seem to show a hairline that looks like a post-partum telogen effluvium hairline. Then she either started wearing extensions regularly or maybe the IBD was diagnosed and became better controlled. It’s subtle, she always has a full head of hair and maybe it’s just the hairstyles, but sometimes her hairline looks a little higher.
(3) Her slimness. She is probably disciplined about her diet and controlling a bowel problem might be one reason why.
I think treatment for an eating disorder or substance abuse are very, very remote possibilities. The history of bandaids on her fingers is a little weird, though. And bulimia and substance abuse can be comorbidities. But it can’t be anorexia alone. If she’s underweight at all it’s not by an amount that would justify months of inpatient treatment. She’s definitely eating.
R530, you are a dummy.

They could not tell an outright lie about cancer (or anything, for that matter.) To fudge or obfuscate is bad enough, but for Buckingham Palace to go on record flat out lying, for any reason, the damage would be massive. It just didn't happen, but I accept some people like to believe it did. Perhaps the lie was wearing a wig.
What's interesting to me this morning is there is nothing. Not even in the Mail. All the papers are silent, not even rehash stories. You'd think the Mail would be running a No Change Reported as Brave Kate Remains in Hospital or some such made up bullshit. But zip when I breezed through the UK papers this morning.

Which means the palace has stuck its oar in...
by Anonymous | reply 554 | January 19, 2024 1:22 PM |
No one officially denied it was cancer. That was media outlets quoting confidential sources who said it wasn’t.
by Anonymous | reply 555 | January 19, 2024 1:22 PM |
If the surgery was on Tuesday, not last month, and tissue was removed during the operation then to be biopsied they’d have just gotten the pathology report last night. It takes a while to get one back so to have said it’s not cancer the same day as the procedure means either it’s not cancer or the doctors don’t think it is but want a pathologist to confirm that.
by Anonymous | reply 556 | January 19, 2024 1:59 PM |
To be serious about the British royal family for a moment. I respect Catherine's privacy. Let her decide to reveal the details of this surgery to the public, if and when she wishes to. She has small children, the oldest of whom would be more aware of the seriousness of an illness. Maybe she and her husband want to shield their children from unwanted worry
by Anonymous | reply 557 | January 19, 2024 2:22 PM |
If cancer was explicitly denied, it’s not cancer. However, some of you are fucking delusional. Think of anyone you know who spent weeks in the hospital and months recovering. Are they still alive and living a perfectly fine life? I seriously doubt it.
One would lose the right to be considered a human if they took joy in Kate’s situation, but trying to romanticize her ordeal by claiming it’s the result of a miscarriage is pathetic.
by Anonymous | reply 558 | January 19, 2024 2:41 PM |
Again, it wasn’t explicitly denied. It was reported in some media outlets, who quoted “sources.” It could have been that the sources knew, or it could be that they surmised it. No one knows.

Is she a boozer? Might have needed a liver transplant.
by Anonymous | reply 561 | January 19, 2024 2:53 PM |
I totally understand Kate wanting to keep her medical details private and protect her children as much as she can, still the lack of leaks to the media is curious.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | January 19, 2024 3:01 PM |
From The Telegraph: "Kensington Palace has confirmed that the Princess of Wales’ planned abdominal surgery was not dealing with a “cancerous” issue."
Can you now bear to part with I suspect it's cancer no matter what? I know it causes excitement and erections in some of you but it's just disproven, even in 2024. "I suspect" is not proof to the contrary. Let it go.

Workaround prevents Harry, Andrew and Baytriss from actually acting as Counsellors of State.
It's a bad week for Montecito. With everybody sick and their own reputations, they can't really fire back about the Queen's reported fury over the Lilibet naming and now Harry's scrapped one of his lawsuits against the Mail... which is apparently gonna cost him 750,000 pounds.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | January 19, 2024 3:06 PM |
R549, Diana is another great example of someone with an eating disorder who had public mental breakdowns. Moreover, after her divorce in 1992, and probably even before, she no longer appeared in public in the same way as Kate does now.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | January 19, 2024 3:06 PM |
The Duke of Sussex has abandoned his legal case against a newspaper after a ruling that the publisher could argue Harry was responsible for a “masterclass in the art of spinning” designed to mislead the public.
Harry sued The Mail on Sunday for libel over an article relating to his demands for taxpayer-funded security when he visits Britain, which he claimed was “an attack on his honesty and integrity”.
He now has to pay his own £500,000 legal costs and the newspaper’s £250,000 legal bill, as well as suffer acute embarrassment after discontinuing the claim on Friday morning.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | January 19, 2024 3:07 PM |
And Diana tried to tell Kate to be careful but she wouldn't listen. So this is really Kate's own fault. And that wig.
by Anonymous | reply 567 | January 19, 2024 3:08 PM |
R565 Whut? I could post literally dozens and dozens of "Diana Visits..." videos from 1992-1997. I'd wager she probably did more work as a divorced royal than Kate does now.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | January 19, 2024 3:20 PM |
We can judge how "well" she's doing and how serious things are by when and how often her kids visit the hospital.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | January 19, 2024 3:47 PM |
Following up on R553’s comment, is there any chance publications like the Daily Mail are actually cooperating with the BRF and have known about this for a while? Because I thought it was weird in September that they didn’t call her on the bad wig. I’m not suggesting this is the case, I have no idea. Just asking if it’s in the realm of possibility. I suggested she might be ill on a thread back then and got no traction. But if I thought of it, others must have as well.
Agree with R558. It’s serious and it’s unlikely that she will bounce back and have no related issues going forward.
This is going to silence the lazy Kate critics, so there’s that. At least she’ll be able to take time off and have a light schedule if she needs it going forward.
by Anonymous | reply 570 | January 19, 2024 4:52 PM |
First, R570, the wig would have to exist. You're just falling for wishful thinking on the internet.
Second, media aren't really in the business of not reporting what they deem in their very generous definition of the public interest.
In this context, if it was a wig, and they could prove it was a wig, with all the expert internet detectiving about it being a wig, you think they wouldn't write about it?

How can she have bowel issues? It is common knowledge ROYALTY does not defecate.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | January 19, 2024 5:26 PM |
R571, no one knows for sure because she won’t tell anyone. But If you look at the post at r470, she is most definitely wearing a wig. And certain media did talk about it, just like they talk about her hair extensions. (And if you think she doesn’t have extensions, I have a bridge to sell you.) I mean, look at the hairline, that’s a wig.
No problem there though, celebrities very often wear wigs when they just don’t have time to really do up their hair, it doesn’t mean that her hair was falling out.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | January 19, 2024 5:28 PM |
^Sorry, at my post above, I meant to reference r460.
by Anonymous | reply 575 | January 19, 2024 5:29 PM |
So you really imagine Kate Middleton, of all people, would go out in public with a bad wig?
Beloved movie stars like John Travolta and Tom Cruise go out in bad wigs, and they're richer than she is. What's the difference?
by Anonymous | reply 576 | January 19, 2024 5:30 PM |
And in the period 1992-1997 Diana had a huge mental health breakdown in public, r569, so she's really not a good comparison to try to prove that Kate has an eating disorder.
As for her visits, in that period she was not a working royal so any visits she made then were her own personal initiative (and they were not as many as you think). She wasn't meeting foreign dignitaries on behalf of the state, she wasn't going on royal walkabouts and meeting the public, she wasn't hosting carols at Westminster Cathedral or opening hospital units.
Moreover, in 1993, Diana even gave a speech stating that she would be withdrawing from public life, so aside from a few events here and there I think you'll find that most of "Diana visits" were before 1992-3.
When Kate makes a public appearance like Diana did in her Martin Bashir interview or when she appears as in the linked video, then you can try to use Diana to argue that Kate has an eating disorder.

Perhaps kidney issues? Royalty does urinate however.
by Anonymous | reply 578 | January 19, 2024 5:33 PM |
R574, I care about her hair to the extent I have to put up with you conspiracy hairstylists banging on about something as I wade through your shit on here. It begins and ends there. No, she was not wearing a wig. Her hairstyle was flattened that day by the bike helmet. It's obvious. As obvious, no one asserts she did it again.
Answer me this: if she wore the wig, why? Why would she wear a wig that looked like her own hair? If she needed to wear the wig due to a medical condition, why hasn't it been spotted since? It just doesn't add up, except for some weird wishful thinking by weird internet people.
Find this "certain media" and link. (Celebitchy doesn't count.) You said, it back it up.

R577, she wept - a little - in public. That's a huge public breakdown by your definition?

She uses extensions just like Beyonce and every other famous woman who depends on her appearance. The "luxurious" thick tresses are more noticeable when you've lost too much weight from illness. So, IMo not technically a wig, but closer. It's a weave. IMO Kate has a serious chronic GI tract problem. I say this because while she has always been slender, you can see that she has sometimes looked much thinner than usual. Not suggesting she has an eating disorder at all. I think she has something else that has finally become unmanageable. It is possible they had to remove part of her colon or something like that. It is serious.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | January 19, 2024 5:38 PM |
We've either a Celebitchy or a - what's the name of that other hole? Anyway, they're stupiding up the thread. Hopefully the cheques come soon and they'll occupy themselves with scratch cards and nail extensions.

R579, if you can’t see that she’s wearing a wig, I can’t help you. That is a fucking wig. And I’m the one who said it doesn’t mean anything, celebrities wear bad and good wigs all the time.. Geez, what’s wrong with you? My point is that it is indicative of nothing.
Oh, and here she is wearing a wig again.. Is People magazine media enough for you? Ok enough with the wigs.
