Oooh, ain't nobody checked for Miss Jody for decades.....
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 17, 2024 4:18 AM |
She fights with people on social media over the pettiest things. Bringing up shalimar would be a near guarantee of a meltdown even if it was complementary like “I’ve been a fan since your shalimar days” she would tear into someone for bringing them up.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 17, 2024 1:03 PM |
It's still a thrill to hear from Jody now and again.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 17, 2024 1:16 PM |
I see what you did there, R6!
I enjoy your reply most of all.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 17, 2024 2:20 PM |
I feel like I'm pretty dialed in with popular music. I grew up in the '80s and I used to listen to the radio all the time and in junior high I would stop at the library and read rolling stone and billboard and I knew Shalimar was a thing but not exactly ever really what it was except that Jody watley was once associated with it. Watching the video about I feel like it's one of those things that somehow everybody else in the world either seem to know about except me or everybody remembers it as being bigger than it ever really was.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 17, 2024 2:33 PM |
Have you ever been stabbed in the back
By someone you thought was really cool?
Did they steal your lover, or was it money
Or was it lies they told?
Strangers just disguised as your friends
Never again, 'cause now you know
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 17, 2024 2:36 PM |
She’s having a meltdown because you queens keep spelling it “Shalimar”.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 17, 2024 2:43 PM |
Also I now want to know and maybe she mentioned in the video but how does her ownership of the US trademark of Slalamar work as far as them being able to perform in the United States.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 17, 2024 2:44 PM |
I love Shalamar. And Looking for a New Love. The guy in the video was hot.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 17, 2024 3:10 PM |
Don't you want me?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 17, 2024 3:51 PM |
I loved that Dead Giveaway song!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 17, 2024 4:02 PM |
Well, after watching this, there isn't a doubt in my mind that they asked Jodi to reunite with them, and Jody, believing she was too big and famous to bother with them, said "no."
She spends 12 minutes in this video telling people to stop bringing up her name when it comes to Shalamar, yet continues to talk non-stop about her association with Shalamar.
Jody, honey, if it wasn't for Shalamar, you'd have never gotten the opportunity to branch out as a solo artist for a brief flash of time in the 1980s.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 17, 2024 4:20 PM |
Her version of I Want Your Love is a 10
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 17, 2024 4:43 PM |
She has some mental illness, clearly
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 17, 2024 5:21 PM |
What is up with her teeth?
She is trying to get a morsel of attention by keeping this shit going.

Jody Watley has a dead career
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 17, 2024 5:55 PM |
She had a really good run in the 80s. Some of the best dance pop songs of the decade.

i love/hate to admit this but i have been following this Jody Watley/Howard Hewitt beef for YEARS on line. This is not the only video on the topic. They both have gone on - and on, and on and on and on - about this feud on any number of youtube channels for yonks. I kind of love it.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 18, 2024 12:40 AM |
R29 So what's the gist of it all? Why do they hate each other so much?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 18, 2024 12:43 PM |
OOOO SHALIMAR!
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 18, 2024 12:46 PM |
r30 I have that same question. What's the brief summary, r29?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 18, 2024 12:52 PM |
Basically that they keep lying about asking her to come back when she claims they never have and that Carolyn was forced upon them as a member by her dad who co created the group.

I’m into Klymaxx
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 18, 2024 1:16 PM |
Klymaxx is fractured as hell. You have Bernadette and Joyce against Cheryl who was stealing publishing credits from ASCAP.

Miss Bernadette Cooper founded Klymaxx.

r34 / r35 / r36 seek help. You're bored, and desperate for attention.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 18, 2024 1:22 PM |
R33 But do you really think Hewitt is lying about asking her to come back?
I completely believe he asked her to reunite with them and she said, "Fuck you! I'm a big star now!"
Now that she's not a big star anymore, her nose is out of joint. And while she doesn't want Shalamar talking about her, she can't seem to stop talking about them.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 18, 2024 1:33 PM |
R33 Is that it? Was there animosity or bad blood before, though, while she was still in the group? Did she leave because of conflict within the group?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 18, 2024 1:34 PM |
Watley is bigger than SHALIMAR ever was. She was a global phenomenon and her sound was copied over and over.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 18, 2024 1:43 PM |
R40 She had a moment. She was a brief 80s flash. That bulb burned out long ago.
I'll never understand artists who shit on the people who got them famous in the first place. Why not just acknowledge it and be grateful and appreciative? It takes nothing away from your solo success.
And, yes, I'm also talking about you, Diana Ross.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 18, 2024 1:47 PM |
R41,Diana Ross got Diana Ross famous. The others would’ve never left the Brewster projects were it not for her scheming and whoring.

R42 Diana Ross' pussy got Diana Ross famous.

R33 That's all? How disappointing. I was hoping for some kind of romantic relationship between Jody and Howard that went wrong or something.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 19, 2024 11:10 AM |
r49 There was a brief romance between Jody and the other guy very early on
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 19, 2024 11:16 AM |
R50 I knew there had to be something more to this than Jody just being pissed off that they keep saying her name.

I thought that she was gorgeous and had a great dancer's body, albeit with breasts. REAL LOVE was my jam, and I love the video where she struts in the retro garb like she's on the runway.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 19, 2024 2:38 PM |
She's still very beautiful
by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 19, 2024 7:36 PM |
Did the perfume start as a promotional merchandising ploy for the band or vice-versa?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | January 19, 2024 8:58 PM |
r10 they want to spell it like the perfume
by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 19, 2024 11:31 PM |
I really wish Karl Lagerfeld was still alive, because you know all he’d have to do is truss her up into a 90’s style Chanel frock, strut her down the aisle during Fashion Week, and have her sing at the end of the runway reunited with her band!
He would be the only one that could have done it.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 19, 2024 11:33 PM |
R11, Jody doesn't own anything. She doesn't own rights or trademark to any of it.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 19, 2024 11:56 PM |
R61
I take it back, R11, Jody owns the trademark in the USA only. I think that's why they do a lot of European touring, to avoid that.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 19, 2024 11:59 PM |
So this is all about who gets the perfume residuals?
by Anonymous | reply 63 | January 20, 2024 12:06 AM |
R39 Jody was unhappy due to her having no creative input into Shalamar. Basically she just sang what was written for her with Howard and Jeffrey and that’s it. Jody has also said no one had any respect for what she brought to the group, especially Howard. Things all came to a head with the recording of the Look album, and when they recorded the Dead Giveaway video. They all fought like hell during this time frame, and then Jody and Jeffrey quit. Winning the best new artist Grammy was vindication for her. Love Jody, but the video was ridiculous. Going on and on for 12 minutes about all this. She had the last laugh and the bigger career. But they’re both nostalgia acts now.

[30] & [32] and anyone else who cares: Shalamar imploded back in the day for all the regular reasons -- inter-band jealousies, bad management, unrealistic expectations, shady music business in general. Howard was positioned as the lead singer, and according to Jody, had disparaged her contributions. They split and both she and Howard had solo careers, with hers eclipsing his by some measure. Since then of course her solo career has cooled, and Shalamar continues to enjoy some measure of success as a touring act, particularly in England. Jody has always felt that Howard is coy about her participation, or tells a tale of trying to get her back in the band, when in fact her replacement was the daughter of the man who actually owns the Shalamar brand and created the group. So her beef is that they talk about her in conjunction with the group as a kind of clickbait -- because her name emerged as the biggest of the three, they talk about her (even to say she's not in the band) as a way of connecting her with their current activities. On the flip side, about 5 years ago Jody saw that the copyright for Shalamar in the United States had lapsed and she launched Shalamar Reloaded, and made a big stink about how she was the rightful owner of the name, but that ended pretty quick which makes me think the original owner of the brand shut that down. Now it seems like Jody and Howard spend a lot of time in interviews or on line talking about the feud. Jody: stop talking about me. Howard: I wish i knew why Jody is still so angry. On a related note, the third member, Jeffrey, made a huge career as a choreographer and dance mentor; worked with Michael Jackson for over 20 years; invented the moonwalk and taught it to MJ; was the co artistic director of Smooth Criminal; and seems to have made a wonderful life somewhat behind the scenes.

I saw the “Soul Train” musical in San Francisco back in October 2023 (pre -Broadway tour), and the Shalimar story arc was one of the many subplots involved.
The musical itself was pretty bad. Life story of Don Cornelius that played more like a chitlin-circuit Tyler Perry play, but the dancing was fun.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | January 22, 2024 7:08 AM |
I really like Jodey Watley. I didn't know she was in Shalamr! I don't really know them either except they had at least one excellent song.
Dancing in the Sheets is a very good song. Perfectly constructed. Infectious. It's impossible not to move. It was in Footloose wasn't it?
Sure enough she's in this video. That's very cool.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | January 22, 2024 7:19 AM |

Sure was. It's a ridiculously good dance song.

Jody should never have been eligible to win the Grammy for Best New Artist. She was a co-lead singer in a group which had several hits for more than half a decade, and was Grammy nominated. It would be like nominating Sting for Best New Artist after his first solo album. This was the same year that NARAS deemed Richard Marx ineligible for Best New Artist because the year before, he had a song on the soundtrack for the Tom Hanks/Jackie Gleason film "Nothing in Common." Two years before that, they deemed Whitney Houston ineligible because she sang a duet on a Teddy Pendergrass album the year before.
And then they gave Shelby Lynne a Grammy for Best New Artist for her 10th album.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | January 22, 2024 7:37 AM |
R71 Nope, that's not Jody in that video.
She had already left the group and was replaced by Delisa Davis when "Dancing in the Sheets" was recorded.

(Along with, bizarrely, Kool And The Gang)

R75 - she and Bananarama were the only female singers on it.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 22, 2024 11:28 AM |
R73 they’ve always played fast and loose with the BNA Grammy. I think one of the rules still is to be eligible you have to have a year in which your music catapults you into the spotlight ie you’ve been put on the map and nearly everyone knows of you. It’s a pretty silly award. But so are a lot of the categories.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | January 22, 2024 1:25 PM |
R65, according to Wiki, Jody does own the US copyright to Shalamar, after a court settlement.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 22, 2024 3:43 PM |
Why wasn’t Whitney Houston nominated for BNA again? Because she was a featured artist somewhere else?
by Anonymous | reply 80 | January 22, 2024 3:47 PM |
Yes, R80. Even though Whitney Houston was her first album, she had recorded duets with both Teddy Pendergrass and Jermaine Jackson for their respective albums, both of which had been released the year prior.
