[quote]An ordinary guy Hackman's age would be put in a nursing home because his family can't take care of him. A wealthy MOVIE STAR would get home health care and stay at home. A dimwited spouse would try to take care of a 95 man herself. A dimwited spouse would not have a plan when her 95 year old husband insists he doesn't need care. It's possible Betsy, being so grateful she got to live with a movie star in a mansion, went along with Gene's wishes.
This made a lot of sense.
It’s a tragedy Betsy wasn’t able to retire.

Investigators searched the $3.8 million home on Thursday and found thyroid medication and Diltiazem inside, along with Tylenol.
Arakawa was found dead on the floor of the couple's bathroom. An open bottle of prescription pills was found partially scattered on a countertop nearby.
Police also listed two green phones, a 2025 monthly calendar planner and the couple's health records, but didn't go into detail about what was in them

The tentative timeline suggests that the Hackmans had been dead undiscovered for up to two weeks, so it's possible he was already dead - or just dead - when OP made his post.

Potential inconsistencies:
[quote]A man who described himself as a caretaker of the subdivision called 911 to report the bodies, according to the call audio. He said that the door was locked and that he could not go inside, but that he saw them through the window and they were not moving.
And yet:

Ajar is a reporter's word. No worker ever said, "the door was ajar", they'd say "it was open a little, like, this much", or estaba abierta, basically anything but "ajar".
I met this old lady at a wedding who lived out in that area on a hill. Her driveway took 20 minutes to navigate. 20 more minutes to a gas station and an hour to a supermarket. She lived there with her stupid husband and NO PETS. More people live in my apartment building than the 3 towns closest to her. She only came down from her mountain to attend the lesbian wedding of her 80yo sister. She seemed shell shocked, especially when the world's oldest maid of honor created drama by saying in her toast, "she loved me first" and the bride shouted from across the room, "but you never put out!". Seriously.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 28, 2025 8:21 PM |
A couple articles I read about Hackman said he and his wife moved to the outskirts of Santa Fe for privacy and to escape Hollywood life. He probably didn't want a lot of attention or visitors. I live adjacent to a retirement community and know many of its residents. Some have frequent contact with their children, some don't. Quite a few of them put privacy on a pedestal. Not talking to your parents frequently doesn't mean you are estranged. In my experience, adults who are super close to their parents and vice versa often have enmeshed, dysfunctional relationships.

Why? She could’ve tripped over one of the dogs, lost her balance, accidentally grabbed the heater and fell hitting her head. He didn’t have a phone / didn’t know how to use hers because it would be locked, so he set out to try to summon help but being upset and unsteady, he also slipped and fell.

My theory: he died first, she took her own life soon after. She locked the older dog in the crate and left the front door open, to alert the neighbors and/or allow welfare checkers to get into the home.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | March 1, 2025 3:39 AM |
I agree R76. Still, it was extremely cruel to lock 1animal in a cage to starve to death.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | March 1, 2025 4:29 AM |
I wonder if the older dog was incontinent and was kept in crate with chucks pads during the night. It could have been a set up in which they let the dog out of the crate in the mornings for exercise and eating. It could have been that Betsy had a medical episode in the bathroom and fell while the dog was still in the crate. Gene heard the fall from the mudroom and may have tripped trying to get to Betsy.

Doug Lanham owned Jinja Bar & Bistro in Santa Fe, New Mexico when he first met Hackman. The two struck up a friendship and Hackman eventually became co-owner of the restaurant, which specializes in the "cultures and cuisine of the Pacific Islands and East Asia".
Lanham also recalled that Hackman's wife, Betsy Arakawa, kept her husband on a strict diet, so he would often order the halibut or rice-paper salmon. Hackman could only sneak a cheat meal when he was out golfing, Lanham added.

They had communicated with them by phone and text, primarily with Arakawa.

Hackman’s health had declined in recent months.
He was essentially kind of home-bound. Around a year ago, Hackman had quit riding his bike through the neighborhood.
Betsy tried to keep him kind of active and engaged. He did puzzles and yoga via Zoom daily. She was in perfect health and was so fit.

Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were devoted pet owners before they were recently found dead, alongside one of their beloved dog, at their Santa Fe home.
The couple were very responsible caregivers to their animals.
They always had German shepherd rescues, and they were really good to their dogs and very responsible dog owners.
At this time, it is not known where the two surviving canines are, but safety would be something Hackman and Arakawa would have been concerned about.
