We've known for quite some time that Jack Nicholson was abusive. This came out with regard to his relationship with Anjelica Huston.

Remember when Boyle was on SNL and did a skit called, “Help me, I’m a starving actress!” in response to media stories about her weight? But the audience didn’t laugh because it was so obvious Boyle was indeed a starving actress.

Nicholson is untouchable at this point. He's not going to live for very much longer, and his terrible behavior has been baked into his movie persona for decades. No one can pretend to be surprised when a person known as a Hollywood bad boy for half a century turns out to be a bad person.

R11, Britney Spears just released a best-seller. If she can do it, then Lara Flynn Boyle can do the same and sit down and ramble her stories about Jack Nicholson, Twin Peaks and working on The Practice during the height of anorexia chic and have her ghostwriter turn it into something readable.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 14, 2024 2:02 PM |
Well she was more than an extra because she was a regular on a series. An extra is an extra. Stardom has nothing to do with your casting position. A lot of people get cast in shows and never become big stars.
She did become a big star in 90s tv though. She was cast on a hit show and everyone knew who she was. She was never the same after being with him.

In 2012, EL wrote this blind item about LFB herself even mentioning what a book she might write would be like:
[quote] It is quite shocking that this actress is even still alive. She probably spent more on drugs and did more drugs than any other actress in modern Hollywood. She rarely works anymore although she has talked of a comeback. Back in the day this actress was just about A list and was doing movies and television and had an A list boyfriend. That was the peak of her drug use. His parties were legendary and he paid for the drugs and our actress had about a two year period there which is just one big blank. If this actress ever decides to write a book to tell her tales it will be filled with orgies and drugs like you have never seen. Her boyfriend used to make her have sex with everyone and everything. Men or women, old and young. She did it too because she was so crazy for the drugs. She basically could not function enough to work for a several year period but her boyfriend would make sure she was hired more to keep her out of the house than out of any goodness of his heart. She was just a plaything to him. Had them before and has them now. Not as many now, but he still has them. Back then he was winding down his party lifestyle and she was the perfect way for him to go out. She is a hollow shell compared to what she used to be. She is with someone else now. He doesn't really know what happened. He is just enamored with the fact that he has an actress who used to be in movies and television. The fact that she does not talk about that part of her life or have many memories of it and has had so much brain damage that she can barely make sentences sometimes does not really bother him. This actress had such promise and it went away in a drug induced haze that is the biggest anyone can remember. August 6, 2012
btw - Isn't she still married to the guy mentioned in the blind? I wonder what he'd think about a book.

Jack Nicholson was the best and most emblematic actor of the 1970s, without a doubt. I think I read somewhere that he was into spanking women. But I hardly think that would raise many eyebrows now. In her divorce action against Cary Grant, Dyan Cannon talked about how Cary Grant once spanked her when he was angry at her about something, and it was treated as a kind of smarmy joke in the press at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | January 20, 2024 2:13 AM |
I think Nicholson is a good actor but whether he was the best of the 70s is debatable. Gene Hackman, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffmann, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino for ex.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | January 20, 2024 10:24 PM |
Nicholson is a one trick pony. He is Here’s Johny! In everything since The Shining.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | January 21, 2024 12:34 AM |
Hackman had higher stature than Jack in the early years. But one could make a case for anyone listed at r90. I think that though Jack was indeed a legend already in the 70’s, he had not peaked.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | January 21, 2024 1:11 AM |
R90: Nicholson was a box office star, his name on a picture brought in an audience. He was liked in and out of the business. More than you can say for many of the actors working in the 1970s on your list.
And at his best I think he was a much better actor than Newman, Redford, Hoffman, Dreyfuss and Shaw (who was not a movie star, however much stage work he did). Partly because he chose his parts well. And he got first refusal on many of the best scripts around. DeNiro and Pacino were great actors, but didn’t begin to hit their stride as stars until well into the ‘70s.
I also used the word “emblematic” to mean he seemed to sum up that movie decade as a star other men liked and that women felt drawn to, someone everyone wanted to see. In the ‘50s that was William Holden (who was more accessible than Brando) in the ‘60s Paul Newman. And I think it was Jack Nicholson in the 1970s.

[quote] And at his best I think he was a much better actor than Newman, Redford, Hoffman, Dreyfuss and Shaw
It’s not just acting skills or talent. What Nicholson had more than any in your list (except Newman and possibly Shaw), was a simply undeniable charisma. I realized that with The Last Tycoon in his scene with DeNiro, and in all his scenes in Reds. He blew anyone and everyone else in a scene with him off the screen. In the words of Andreas Voutsinas: “You either got it, or you ain!t”

R93 Yes you’ve stated this theory before and apparently you’re sure you’re right.
I don’t think Nicholson wasn’t emblematic of the ‘70s, I just don’t think he’s the only actor who was. Few of his ‘70s moves were big hits. Robert Redford was probably the biggest star of the ‘70s and many people associate him closely with the decade. Nicholson was so unpopular by the end of the ‘70s, Terms Of Endearment in the early ‘80s was considered a comeback, at the time. In a supporting role (back then, stars didn’t regularly take supporting roles like they do now).
As for Holden, in the 50’s, why not Gregory Peck? Why not James Stewart - the ‘50s was his most popular decade and he appeared in hit after hit, all the westerns, The Glenn Miller Story, the Hitchcock films, Anatomy Of A Murder, etc. And what about John Wayne, for that matter? It was his biggest decade, too.

R 108: You’ve named a lot popular movie actors but to me, “emblamatic” refers to an actor that broke through in a given decade continued to dominate it, and somehow comes to represent it.
Gregory Peck broke through as a star during the WWII years, and Stewart at the end of the ‘30s. Wayne, who’d been around since the silents, also broke through in ‘39 as a star. But though consistently popular, he was never the rage, perhaps because he wasn’t tied to any one studio. All continued to star in hit films in the ‘50s but they’d been around in successful films for years already, they were just part of the movie landscape by then.
Redford had a lot of hits in the ‘70s sure, but he was always stiff as an actor and he didn’t rack up Oscar nominations in big popular hits the way Nicholson did after his breakthrough in “Easy Rider” in ‘69 followed by “Five Easy Pieces” in ‘71, “The Last Detail” in ‘73, “Chinatown” in ‘74, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” in ‘75, movies that hit the pop culture and/or political sweet spot. Redford was known as a political liberal but personally and as a screen presence his image was square, he was a star your mother could love. Nicholson had a whiff of danger and of the counter-culture which was what made him a far hotter and hipper star than Redford.
You are right that Nicholson’s career slowly ran out of steam by the end of the decade, but white-hot stardom — if it comes at all — never lasts for very long. There are always new people coming up. Nicholson got Supporting nominations for “Terms of Endearment” and “Reds” by which time he was simply another male star in the movie landscape just as Peck and Stewart had been. But from ‘70 - ‘75 no other male star could touch him.

R112 Yes, but “Dark Command” was the only big hit he did for Republic. Most of the films he did after “Stagecoach” were for a variety of studios.
