Is the movie going to happen or not? Any Scream fans out there? We know Melissa Barrera is probably never gonna work in that town again, Jenna Ortega is out, Christopher Landon out, Neve Campbell is still holding out for cash. That just leaves the mixed race twins and Courtney Cox's face. Any updates?
It's still on, apparently. But it doesn't have a director or a cast. Spyglass reached out to Melissa Barrera after the backlash to her firing, and she told them to fuck off. She has "Abigail" coming out soon, so she should be fine.
I think the franchise should rest for a while so people forget about the controversy.

I adore Neve Campbell, but think Scream should have stayed a standalone film. Absolute classic.
Am pretty sure the Melissa & Wednesday show has destroyed the franchise for now, at least. Toxicity around Spyglass destroyed all momentum.

I agree R2 Spyglass and politics ruined the Scream franchise.

They should just give it a rest. I like the franchise but if they never make another one I won’t be upset

Neve Campbell is 'considering' returning but I'm sure she won't get out of bed for less than a million.

Concurred with R2. And it's entirely the studio's own fault: they're too cheap to cough up the bucks for Jenna (or Neve), and WAY the fuck too sensitive about Melissa's comments supporting *Palestinians*, not Hamas or anything even remotely antisemitic. R5, Neve can – and SHOULD – ask for WAY more than $1M. The franchise may be largely fucked without her, so if I was her I wouldn't get out of bed for less than $10 mil AND final script approval.
The problem with losing their two leads: they've killed off LITERALLY EVERYBODY ELSE. The smart money seems like it'd be on some grand finale akin to Jamie Lee & "Halloween": mostly old school, and back to the OG characters, with Sidney topping the list. Since the series literally always features relatives of a murdered Ghostface Killah, why not go balls out and do something crazy like finding out Drew Barrymore's iconic character from the first one has an identical twin who's been shit-stirring behind the scenes for the past 30 years!
Or how about THIS: there was an 11-year lag (2000-2011) between the third & fourth installments. What if Sidney had a secret love child at some point who's now a teen, giving Ghostface fresh meat to kill? And since "Scream" basically invented the concept of a reboot, they're also the best-suited to lampoon it – and thankfully they've always done in-story satire to set it up, namely the "Stab" series based on the "real" Woodsboro murders. Nowadays it seems like we have nothing *but* reboots – and it's no small irony that the producers lost Jenna Ortega to, yep, a reboot (I know Wednesday's merely a character in "The Addams Family," but that's nitpicky).
So: the new Ghostface figures out where Sidney lives, kills someone genuinely shocking in the opener – maybe Sidney's husband? – and a podcaster tries to relaunch "Stab" as a "Serial"-style whodunit, all while the *film" producers of "Stab" want to reboot it for the movies. (Even better, have it all take place in Atlanta, Hollywood's favorite new place to use to fake literally any locale on Earth, including both L.A. and even the desert. And make it more meta by pointing out where, say, the "Infinity War" scene just outside the Sanctum Sanctorum was shot. (As it so happens, I've been there - it's in downtown Atlanta, which made for a surprisingly not-bad West Village onscreen, presumably with a fuckload of CG to thank.)

No the 'secret love child' and identical twin bit R6. This is a horror series not a daytime soap opera. Leave the baby daddy drama and identity issues in the trash and just give me Ghostface and some dead bodies. Scream was never that complicated. Kevin Williamson also needs to return as the head writer. It is his series after all and the plot and Ghostface's motives are mediocre without him.

the last Scream movie was so badly done I don't care if they ever make another one. If I never have to see the "core 4" again I'll be fucking thrilled.

Did they kill off Courteney in the last one?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 14, 2024 2:40 AM |
No R9 Gale lived. Sidney is still alive as well but we never saw her in the last film, she was only referenced.

Why don't they bring in Jamie Lee as Neve's estranged aunt and do a crossover?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 14, 2024 2:50 AM |
Neve should return but playing Neve Campbell playing Sidney in a new Stab movie.

They could always go the New Nightmare route and have the original cast terrorized by... whomever. I don't trust anyone but Craven with a step like that, though. Jessica Rothe would have been a nice addition to the cast - was kind of hoping Christopher Landon would pull her into his Scream 7 when he was slated to direct.
I agree with you, R6. Sid's killed everyone who could conceivably have something against her or her mom. Time to put all the sharp knives in the dishwasher and put the mask in the bin for Goodwill.

R7, you seriously don't think there's more than a dash of soap opera-esque writing here, given all the endless numbers of relatives that pop out of the woodwork in each new movie? (And btw serial killers are a soap opera staple as well.)
R13, to clarify, my point was that there are obviously goings on in Sidney's life that the audience knows zilch about. This is a character we've spent a handful of weeks with over a 28-year period. There are ALWAYS possible Big Bads out there!
