I'm 57 and had never seen an Elvis Presley movie before - don't know how I managed that. So I started at the beginning and have been watching one each night. The last two, "Flaming Star" and "Wild in the Country" were pretty much dramas with little singing, although they weren't bad. I'm looking forward to tonight's film, "Blue Hawaii", which I assume will be light and full of music. I'm told "Viva Las Vegas" is his most fun film. What are some of your favorites? What do I have especially to look forward to?
I watched them all as a kid, OP.
Loved them all.

I enjoyed Loving You, King Creole, G.I. Blues, Wild in the Country, Fun in Acapulco, Girls! Girls! Girls!, It Happened at the World’s Fair, Viva Las Vegas, Live a Little, Love a Little, The Trouble with Girls, and Change of Habit.

I've never seen the old Elvis movies, but in my mind they're like the old Frankie and Annette beach blanket bingo movies.
When I was a little kid, there was a local channel that used to play all the old Abbott and Costello and all the Road To movies. I have not seen any of them since then. I've always wondered whether I'd enjoy them today as much as I did when I was a kid.

“King Creole” was the only one that Elvis liked.

I've seen up through "Girls! Girls! Girls!" now. So far, I actually enjoyed his western film "Flaming Star" best.

I love Blue Hawaii.

I've never understood the fascination with Elvis. And I'm old enough (b. 1952) to remember him when he was actively recording and making movies. I never found him attractive, and I didn't really care much for his music either.

R5 I’ve heard some good things about Follow That Dream and Kid Galahad.

"Viva Las Vegas" was a lot of fun, mainly because of the great Ann-Margret.

They're all good in their own way, even the one with Mary Tyler Moore as the nun. I love his movies.

Change of Habit (his last film as an actor?) is a hoot. Lots of old character actors, MTM and Ed Asner plus Elvis is sexy as hell.

He wasn't just a singer who made some hit movies (like Connie Francis). He was an actual movie star, with his name above the title, delivering two or three pictures per year most years from 1956-69 for major studios:MGM, UA, Paramount, and Fox. That's a good long run.
Whatever you think of his acting in his films, he was definitely a movie star.

I love Girl Happy. Elvis and Miss Shelley Fabares had a marvelous chemistry.

Didn't Babs want him for A Star is Born?

What R7 said -- except I was born a few years later.

I was the oldest woman ever paired with him.

It’s funny because watching his movies is what made me “get” Elvis. Also, his duet with Frank Sinatra.

R9 The young actresses of today have nothing on Ann in terms of charisma and star power.

It Happened at the World’s Fair is a 60s movie for better or worse.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 24, 2024 8:33 PM |
For most of the 60s, Col Tom Parker’s MO was to keep Elvis making movies and lame soundtrack albums while he counted the money. So Elvis was first and foremost a movie star after his return from the army. His comeback music special, in ‘68, signaled his return to singing and performing, in Vegas and shows within the US.
Anyway, I like Follow That Dream, mainly because it was my favorite growing up. Elvis also slept with many of his female costars, and had great chemistry with Ann Margaret and supposedly could’ve had a “real” relationship with her if not for his promise to marry Priscilla. I always think of that when I watch Viva Las Vegas…his life might’ve turned out differently if he spent it with her. Or not.

Elvis and Ann-Margret were having an affair during Viva Las Vegas.

R20 Follow That Dream costar Anne Helm talked about her romance with Elvis.

King Creole (directed by Michael Curtiz) is super good, though very dark - it feels almost like a musical noir film. Elvis and Carolyn Jones had great onscreen chemistry. Also features a rare villain role by Walter Matthau.

Loved Barbara Stanwyck in "Roustabout" - her next to last role. Then last night's film was "Girl Happy" with Shelly Fabares who was kind of nondescript, although she had some good dancing moves.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 25, 2024 3:42 PM |
Oh, and "Girl Happy" also had Nita Talbot, who was great.

Roustabout is great!

Watched Spinout. Bland and silly. Exactly how I like my movies.

Not to mention that during that time he consistently ranked among the Top 10 bankable actors: 1957 (#4), 1961 (#10), 1962 (#5), 1963 (#7), 1964 (#6), 1965 (#6), 1966 (#10).
His movies were very successful. Now, that's a genuine movie star!
For some perspective, Audrey Hepburn never made the list.

I remember Debra Winger was originally cast in the Geena Davis role in A League of Their Own, but dropped out after Madonna was cast, saying she didn't want to make "an Elvis movie."

King Creole - Girl Happy- Viva Las Vegas- Jailhouse Rock
I also think that Elvis would have made a good actor if given the chance to really act. His film depended a great deal on his chemistry with the actresses in them. But he is sexy in every one!!!

I've now seen all but one of his films (Change of Habit). They've all been likeable enough, nothing really special. But the one I just watched tonight, "The Trouble with Girls" (1969) is without a doubt the single worst movie I have ever seen. It was excruciating to sit through. I really didn't think a movie could be so bad. Characters, actors, music, everything just terrible. The only good thing about is was Susan Olsen and Anissa Jones, who were both cute.

Elvis claimed he fucked all but one of his female co-stars. MTM later said that was she.

I like his last feature film Change of Habit. The songs are good and Elvis was still slim and handsome.

They're all bad movies.
Most have good scenes.
Avoid anything with him changing his shirt or wearing a bathing suit. He looks like someone who died in the bathtub and was found four days later.

It would be interesting to see what he’d have done in films in the 70s, when movies got grittier and more realistic. Maybe that’s why he quit when he did. The 60s is my least favorite decade for film, and all of his movies seem like the kind of fluffy concoctions that don’t appeal to me.
