Billie Myers: What stalled her career after “Kiss the Rain”?
“Hello”
Remember when late 90’s music videos were all turnkey productions designed for heavy rotation on Vh1 and jam-packed enough angst to rival a Prozac commercial? Billie Myers had a breakout hit with “Kiss the Rain”. It dominated global airwaves and reached #15 on the Billbaord charts.
She had a signature voice and Desmond Chloe produced and wrote much of her album “Growing Pains”, but her follow-up single, “Tell Me”, which was accompanied by a risqué video designed for heavy club play, failed to ignite and she’s been MIA from radio airwaves ever since.
“Do you miss me?”
Her sexuality was ambiguous. Hailing from the UK, she was rumored to have a fling with publicity whore at the time, Ingrid Casares, but that might have been another Casares publicity stunt that Myers took personally. She wasn’t out of the closet in the 90’s, but she now identifies as bisexual.
“What’s new?”
I think she should have re-channeled her career to a lesbian audience. Watch the music video for “Tell Me”. She could have been a dyke icon. She had such masculine energy and all her music is basically about how fucked up and paranoid she is in the head with a tendency to be jealous of her lovers emotionally straying from her, something lesbians would rock out to in Provincetown or dyke Pride concerts.
Do you remember “Kiss the Rain” and where you were when this classic first played on the radio?

Was it anything to do with the fact that she's got a fucking TERRIBLE voice OP? Like multiple cats being strangled.
She sounds worse than Janet Jackson and that's saying something.

If that’s her best song then I’m good not knowing WHET.

“Come to my window to kiss the rain” - Billie could’ve been a great opening act for the Etheridge audience.

I liked her second album, Vertigo, even better:
Am I Here Yet? (Return to Sender)
Should I Call You Jesus?
Flexible
Roll Over Beethoven
Great songs.

The Kiss The Rain video that I remember is the one where she’s literally getting soaked in rain. She looked a lot like Sandra Bernhard in that one.

It was never as great as "When the Rain Begins to Fall," perhaps because it did not have a video about an op-art black-and-white gang war in Morocco.

R6, that’s the US video. The other one, where she’s batshit, is the UK version.

She should come back as even more gay.

She got an early Thunderpuss remix before they blew up with their Whitney “It’s Not Right…” remix.

Seriously. Do posters in this thread really think she can sing? Even Marianne Faithful sounds better.
This has to be a parody thread.

She has a distinct voice. I think the song is poorly written .

My partner and I had a choreographed dance to this song, at our wedding, for a crowd of 200.

Her career stalled because people thought she was a man.

She's a friend of a friend of mine and, yes, she is a massive lesbian.

R19, why does she still claim to be bisexual?
I think being in the closet killed her career. She was so dyke-y when “Kiss the Rain” hit, but she tries HARD to sell herself as this pansexual woman in the “Tell Me” video which was such a departure from “Kiss the Rain”.

When the man entered my lady potato I hit the high notes and shouted KISS THE RAIN!!!!
When he was done he took the 2 paperbags off of my head and left.
I always think of this moment when playng this song. Which is repeatedly on my Walkman.

The UK tried to ram so many different female singerson MTV /VH1 in the 80s and 90s, and many of them failed to become the 'next big thing'. Lisa Stansfield didn't do it ("All Around the World") , Allison Moyet didn't do it ("Invisible"), and this one didn't do it.

Lisa Stansfield did do it.

Her “is she a lez?” vibe fit right in during the mid-late 90’s Lilith Fair era. That can’t be why she went down the shitter.

I used to drive my mother crazy listening to this song. I absolutely loved it.
It was just a one off one hit wonder song. I thought nothing of her having a second song.

Damn, she murdered that apartment in the Kiss The Rain video.

Because of her success other labels had their own black art-rock warblers (Kina, Res) - but lack of solid follow-up material and America's love of thug/ho pop in the early aughts contributed greatly to her relegation to the land of Tasmin Archer and FeFe Dobson.

I'm a 90 s alt music junkie. I was in high-school in the 90s and I first heard Kiss the Rain in my bedroom while doing home work and listening to the radio after-school . Later I heard it on an episode of Dawson's Creek

It’s really a Desmond Child song and Billie was just a vehicle to Child and whatever record company she was signed to. I don’t think she had a chance.

If she was so marginally talented, how did she sign a deal with a songwriter/producer as prolific as Desmond Child?
Part of me thinks she didn't appeal to a properly segmented audience. She wasn't cute enough to be a pop star, soulful enough to stand among the Lilith Fair gals, and dykey-enough to entice Etheridge fans to buy her album.

Paula Cole still puts out new music and plays small venues.
Meredith Brooks is a MAGA Trump supporter.
