Is “The a Curious Case of Natalia Grace” sleazy?

About 10 minutes in, it certainly feels like it!

I’m not a reality show person and this feels like it’s treading a bit into those waters.

The problem with reading reviews is they tend to be full of spoilers, but I skimmed this one and it concludes:

[quote] By the time it reaches its off-the-wall, exploitation-drenched conclusion, The Curious Case of Natalia Grace has transformed from an examination of Natalia’s true nature into a series about Michael and Kristine’s villainy.

What does DL say?

If the DNA test showing her age is legit, the adoptive parents who abandoned her should be thrown in jail because they fled to Canada, leaving a disabled child to fend for herself. I can’t believe they felt endangered by a 9 year-old dwarf!

Nice spoiler r1.

Meanwhile, anyone care to answer the question?

by Anonymousreply 2January 9, 2024 12:24 AM

Of course it is

by Anonymousreply 3January 9, 2024 12:25 AM

Sleazy to the max. Producers can't tell a straight story. So many innuendos, cliffhangers. The girl's story is nuts, though. I'm not sorry I watched it.

by Anonymousreply 4January 9, 2024 12:28 AM

R2

The story has been public for several years so it’s not really a spoiler. I understand your point about the reality vibe of the show but it’s actually harrowing what they did to this already traumatized young girl. As a parent, I was sickened at the parents’ behavior and I’m glad they’ve been exposed.

by Anonymousreply 5January 9, 2024 12:28 AM

The first season, with its insane twists and truth-is-stranger-than-fiction turns, gripped me enough so that I could overlook some of its sleaziness. But Season 2 just feels like pure exploitation--re-traumatizing this poor little person by having her recount the abuse ad nauseam, with close-ups of tears streaming down her face. And the "reporter" giving her takes every few minutes just seems like so much talking down to the audience, as though because we're watching something sleazy we can't put the pieces together by ourselves.

by Anonymousreply 6January 9, 2024 12:29 AM

How was that a spoiler when it's been in the headlines for weeks?

by Anonymousreply 7January 9, 2024 12:29 AM

Yes — the DNA test results has been in all the tabloids. I haven’t seen the show, but sleaziness sells. If it brings awareness to her plight of the sex dwarf, good for her.

Sorry r7 the national enquirer isn’t my go-to newspaper

by Anonymousreply 9January 9, 2024 12:37 AM

“I’m not a reality show person.” Sure, Jan.

by Anonymousreply 10January 9, 2024 12:39 AM

Spoiler: OP is a fucking idiot.

by Anonymousreply 11January 9, 2024 12:46 AM

OP: “Sorry [R7] the national enquirer isn’t my go-to newspaper.”

Also OP: Links to a tabloid article in The Daily Beast.

by Anonymousreply 12January 9, 2024 12:48 AM

Where do I watch this?

by Anonymousreply 13January 9, 2024 12:50 AM

R1, that hairy cooter scared them right proper.

by Anonymousreply 14January 9, 2024 1:13 AM

Definitely in a bar in Sheboygan, MI, r13

by Anonymousreply 15January 9, 2024 1:47 AM

R13 it's on Max. The adoptive dad is really cringy and sleazy for sure. I hated how 1st she was brainwashed to be 22 and now she's brainwashed into Christianity.

by Anonymousreply 16January 9, 2024 1:49 AM

The fake crying on both Natalia and the crazy dad were something to behold.

by Anonymousreply 17January 9, 2024 3:41 AM

If only it were "The Curious Case of Nancy Grace," except no one would hire her for sex.

by Anonymousreply 18January 9, 2024 4:49 AM

I watched a few eps of this and it’s hard to endure the oily histrionics of Michael, the adoptive father. Is there much more of him in later eps?

by Anonymousreply 19January 9, 2024 5:54 AM

Also, how is he not gay? He's the gayest straight man on the planet.

by Anonymousreply 20January 9, 2024 5:56 AM

I’m not sure I want to expose myself to the details of this story. Can someone post a recap in a few sentences? I’m not familiar with the case.

by Anonymousreply 21January 9, 2024 6:07 AM

if she was indeed a little girl when she was adopted how is her perfect english and her hairy bleeding snatch explained?

by Anonymousreply 22January 9, 2024 6:46 AM

R22 I don’t think there was ever any definite proof she had pubic hair. That’s just a claim of the Barnetts. Her perfect English is explained by her being a young child when she came to America. If she had been an adult she would have had a thick Ukrainian accent.

by Anonymousreply 23January 9, 2024 7:30 AM

I agree, R23. Her perfect American accent is strong evidence that she was a child when brought to the U.S.. Any linguist would agree. As for her pubic hair, etc, precocious puberty exists — that’s why puberty blockers were developed in the first place. Maybe she had a hormone imbalance leading to some behavioral problems, and the shitty adoptive parents contributed to that as well by assuming she was an evil, psychopathic sex-dwarf instead of a troubled kid in need of professional help.

by Anonymousreply 24January 9, 2024 8:53 AM

I suspect that her hard life in orphanages made her quite a bad seed, and those ultra-toxic Barnetts wanted to toss her aside as soon as they sensed that.

The first season made we wonder whether there are any sane people in Indiana.

by Anonymousreply 25January 9, 2024 5:23 PM

I justed rented "Orphan: First Kill" and it was sleazy fun. It's good to see Julia Stiles again.

6 yrs old, full bush & a knife

by Anonymousreply 27January 9, 2024 6:04 PM

R23 the people at the hospital the didn't want her because she was offering herself up to men mentioned pubic hair when giving her injections.

by Anonymousreply 28February 20, 2024 3:53 AM

It’s not unheard of for a child with a growth disorder to have other issues with physical development. Precocious puberty is thought to occur more commonly in girls exposed to high-stress situation, and Natalia being sent from Ukraine and shuffled among criminally negligent US adoptive families is a higher level of stress than most people will ever experience. Sexually abused children may act out in sexually inappropriate ways, and while living unsupervised in an apartment, Natalia was able to associate with people who believed she was an adult. One of them had a history of sex offenses against children. Her behavior takes on a very different cast when framed as the actions of a child on her own and without protection, with people around her believing she was an adult who could consent.

The first season showed the world what an asshole Michael Barnett is, but it is unfortunate to force Natalia to participate when she is still very young, and so dependent on people. She seems like a bright girl, and it would be nice to hear of her having a shot at education and job training, opportunities denied to her when she was legally declared an adult.

by Anonymousreply 29February 20, 2024 4:14 AM

Before being adopted by the Barnetts, Natalia spent extended time with a potential adoptive family who all had dwarfism. At no point did the parents in that family get the impression that she was anything other than a child. It’s hard for me to believe that an adult relying on dwarfism to pose as a kid and … get adopted? … would be able to seamlessly pass as a child among other little people, especially educated parents who had a child of their own. They might believe her performance well enough to mostly buy it, but you would also expect them to be more likely than average-sized people to pick up one some red flags that became “aha” moments when her real age came out.

by Anonymousreply 30February 20, 2024 4:29 AM

R25 Why drag an entire state into this shit storm? Ugh. You're like that DL troll that pushes Trump into every topic. I'm waiting for him to make an appearance...

by Anonymousreply 31February 20, 2024 4:51 AM

I just remember that gross face pathetically staring and batting her eyes at her adopted mom who's just going off on her

by Anonymousreply 32February 20, 2024 5:39 AM

Kristine has pretty much admitted it was all a lie. People can stop speculating about her age. In recent FB posts she says she was hacked, yet she hasn’t taken this post down.

Damn Ukrainian criminals.

by Anonymousreply 35February 20, 2024 6:45 AM

A perfect storm of unbalanced individuals. Everyone involved was damaged previously to this convergence of personalities and all spiraled downward because of it. I question how it started. Who put together these particular people?
