The Guardian says Jo Koy delivered a horrible hosting gig for the ages

He was utterly dreadful. Not one joke landed.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 8, 2024 11:50 AM |
Not sure if Jo Koy was horrible, but his opening monologue was pretty bad. He was trying very hard, but so much fell flat.
Thankfully, Jo Koy was nearly absent for the rest of the show.

Jo Koy is only the second Asian American to host the Golden Globes. (Sandra Oh was the first, in 2019.) But Koy’s opening monologue felt like a highlight reel of mortifying moments. From a weird joke about being attracted to a plastic Barbie to one about the “Killers of the Flower Moon” filmmakers stealing the plot, Koy’s jokes met an icy reception from the audience. To be fair, he had barely any time to prepare. “I got the gig 10 days ago!” he said from the stage. “You want a perfect monologue?” It’s a shame, but Koy’s jokes will probably end up being best remembered for the memes they inspire on social media.
Why you gotta be so mean? The host’s jokes did not really improve as the night went on.
“We came on after a football doubleheader,” Koy said as the ceremony returned from its first commercial break. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the N.F.L.? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”
Koy seemed to swallow the word “camera” as he said it. And when the actual camera, on cue, panned to Swift, she appeared deeply unamused, her lips pursed, her eyes stern as she sipped a drink.
It is true that Swift has been shown many, many times on N.F.L. telecasts since she began showing up at Kansas City Chiefs games to cheer on the team’s tight end, Travis Kelce.
But Koy’s joke, at the expense of perhaps the most famous person in a room full of famous people, fell flat again. So flat, that he muttered, “Sorry about that.”

One unfortunate thing he kept repeating was to disavow jokes that fell flat by saying he didn't write them.

What was wrong with that joke? I didn't watch the show, but reading that just now made me chuckle. Is Taylor Swift really that humorless? And are people too afraid to get on her bad side to not laugh?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 8, 2024 12:14 PM |
Yes I have to give Koy the Taylor Swift at the NFL joke. It's funny cos it's true.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 8, 2024 12:20 PM |
The Taylor Swift comment was one of the few jokes that I thought was OK - if only because it looked like it irritated her.
Most of his jokes were really corny and just not funny.
Watching the monologue was like watching an amateur facing an audience for the first time.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 8, 2024 12:25 PM |
I felt bad for him, he seems like a nice guy and he was trying hard, but his stuff wasn't going over with the in-person audience at all. I assume it was the same for viewers at home, though I think the Taylor Swift joke was kind of funny.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 8, 2024 12:33 PM |
If anything, let us all hope and pray that the swift peace of the evening causes a backlash against that entitled humorless overexposed Cunt of a woman. She’s due for a reality check, and after years of fighting with other celebrities and typically winning, she needs to be knocked down several pegs.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 8, 2024 12:46 PM |
The Taylor Swift joke was the only one that DID land!
That's why she was so pissed.
And I fucking loved it that he ZINGED her. Fuck that useless cunt Taylor Swift. Overexposed bitch.
Jo Koy's humor is mostly about Filipinos, I would imagine. Which is probably why he wasn't connecting.
I've seen bits and pieces of his stand-up comedy, and it's mostly cultural humor. His audience is primarily Filipino.
I don't think his type of comedy was right for the Golden Globes.
But they had no choice, since no one else would take the job.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 8, 2024 12:56 PM |
Jo Koy telling "Filipino moms" jokes.
Again, his type of humor was not a right fit for the Golden Globes, which needs a more universal type of humor.

No, her face will be on tv more at the football games. It's the playoffs, which is prime season for her PR stunts.

by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 8, 2024 1:42 PM |
She really needs to lighten up. It’s such an unlikable quality to not be able to handle even the mildest of jokes. She’s well aware for example, that she has a reputation for going from boyfriend to boyfriend. She even put that in a song! Who cares if some Netflix show makes a joke about it too? And she took offense at Koy’s joke? Relax Taylor.

by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 8, 2024 3:09 PM |
One can only get so far on chuckles about their Philippino mother. BUT, I do feel horribly for him. He still did the job and he stood up there and took the hits, (not that he had a lot of choice at that point).
Could any of his fans here explain the teefs? Did he used to have really bad teeth? Usually, a lot of people with really bad teeth overcompensate when they're able to get them fixed and go for the klieg-light white. I was born with low enamel on my teeth and when I could, I got all my front teeth veneered then later got them with crowns, (which last longer). My dentist just refused to let me go bright white and I'm grateful to him for that. he also made sure that the caps slightly faded in brightness as they went around because that's what natural teeth do. My teeth now look great, bright but natural. Wonder why all these celebrities and news anchor folks don't have dental people who help them with that and let them go with teeth so white they turn blue under bright lights.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 8, 2024 3:26 PM |
The pressure to use veneers in Hollywood is overwhelming. I have friends in production who got veneers because it is so expected of you if you work in the entertainment industry.
The same thing is true with hair implants and Botox/fillers. It started with just the actors getting it, then the producers got them too, and now everyone gets them. They become so used to them they even think people in the rest of the USA who don't get them are weird. (Note how freaked out some DL posters get about the British royals not getting those things--I am sure they're mostly posters who live in LA.)
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 8, 2024 3:31 PM |
He kept being his writers for the bad jokes. I'm sorry fella but you can disagree with your writers on jokes and not perform them and ask them to come up with new ones. Or better yet, write your own. A bad workman blames his tools. This guy had zero delivery and the 'jokes' were dreadful and each time he'd make one it would pan to a non plussed audience with faces saying 'get this fuckwit off the stage please'.
The 'banter' between the award presenters was (save for Jon Baptiste) equally awkward and dreadful.

His horrible, tired, so-called "joke" about Meryl Streep always winning all the awards was dreadful and embarrassing. Omg, she was sitting right there, and at first she kid of went along with it, but the entire room just couldn't get away from the fact that it was so bad.
And the joke about Kevin Costner showing up even though he never goes to anything was painful.

Jo Koy had maybe two decent jokes...the one about Taylor Swift, which was funny and harmless. Taylor Swift is an humorless asshole.
Koy's other funny joke was the insult thrown at Harry and Markle for getting paid by Netflix for doing nothing. That was a good one--and I'm sure the Markles were mortified and humiliated in Montecito. But they deserved Koy's zinger.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 8, 2024 4:19 PM |
Patrick Adams, another cast member from 'Suits,' supposedly tried to get Markle on the Golden Globes as a presenter with him since Suits enjoyed some popularity this past summer on Netflix, and Patrick though presenting with him might give her a bit of favorable spotlight, which she needs. However, rumor has it that she declined Patrick's suggestion because she wanted to be a sole presenter and didn't want to have to share the stage with him.
Since it didn't work out with Markle, that's the reason Patrick had other cast members on stage with him as fellow presenters.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 8, 2024 4:20 PM |
^ I didn’t last long enough for those two jokes. Right from the start it was, who is this guy? and weird unfunny jokes. The audience was not with him and I swear I could see flop sweat. My friend said it was too awkward to watch and went into the kitchen to clean up.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 8, 2024 4:25 PM |

I didn't see the awards live, so I went to YouTube to watch his monologue. Could make it past a couple of minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 8, 2024 4:39 PM |
There have been worse hosts of these zombified celebrity award shows than Jo Koy. He tried. But the monologue was all-over-the-place: no transitions, a patchwork of various writers' jokes delivered by a host who clearly didn't believe in the material enough to sell it. And Koy seemed really determined to get everyone in the room to like him--a fatal mistake in that den of wolves. Ricky Gervais as host acted as though he ran out of fucks to give before Taylor Swift was born.

Meh. Ten days ago is enough time to prepare if you’re a good comic. He’s probably just not “host” material. Someone like Kathy Griffin in her prime probably could have aced hosting with less than 10 days notice. I think it’s just a different skill set. Plus, he’s not exactly a big enough name to be landing this gig in the first place.

When the “stars” (I didn’t recognize any of them) of Suits took the stage—and especially when the two female Suits actors came on stage midway into the guys’ speech—I was certain Markle would be the last surprise person to take stage.
I was dreading it…but then when she didn’t, I realized that would have been the only entertaining part of the show.

The Golden Globes appears to be on the up and up, with 9.4M live + same-day viewers tuning in to watch the 81st annual ceremony, up 50% from 2023’s show, according to early Nielsen data. This number is likely to go up slightly when final numbers are in.

I don't think it was bad at all. He seemed very confident in an intimate room of megastars sitting thisclose to him. Most jokes landed, some didn't. I don't know what people expect: these monologues are typically to needle celebs- some who get the joke and some who reveal their lack of humor.
The award show premise itself is silly so it's ripe for ridicule.

I had never heard of Jo Koy before the Golden Globes telecast and, based on his dreadful performance, I am certain I won't ever hear of him again.
He mentioned in his sorry excuse for a monologue that he had spent "just ten days" to write the jokes. Ten days? Seriously. A gifted performer could have dashed off half a dozen in an hour.
With a roomful of self-important egotists to aim at, it should have been like shooting fish in a barrel. Only he had the gun pointed at himself.
I was pleased overall with the list of winners, but Koy spoiled the evening with a delivery that was like the biggest fart heard round the world.

[quote] Jo Koy responds after criticism of his Golden Globes hosting performance
After viewers and audience members gave Jo Koy a chilly reception for what many said was a mediocre performance as host of Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony, the comedian admitted it wasn’t his best night.
Koy, who took on the hosting duties 10 days before the ceremony, told Good Morning America 3 that he had an “off night,” but that the criticism he’s received has been difficult to hear.
“You know, I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt,” Koy said. “I hit a little moment there where I was just like, hosting is just, it’s a tough gig. And, yes, I am a stand-up comic. With the hosting position, it’s a different style.”
Koy added that he still appreciated the experience.
“We just had 10 days to try and write something for this monologue. It was a crash course. And, you know, I feel bad but I gotta still say that I loved what I did.”
Koy got off to a rocky start when his monologue failed to land with audience members. Some of his jokes, particularly one about feminist film “Barbie,” were heavily criticized.
“‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie’ are competing for cinematic box office achievements. ‘Oppenheimer’ is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project. And Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies,” Koy said.
Another, about Taylor Swift, fell flat.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL?” Koy said. “At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”
Koy told Entertainment Tonight that the Swift joke was more so about the more frequent use of cutaway shots in NFL broadcasts than the Globes.
“Aww, man, it was cute. I was just saying it was cute,” Koy told ET of the joke. “I was just saying it’s less cutaways, that’s all.”
Koy, who previously said in a statement that he hoped to make his “Filipino family” proud and spoke about the power of representation prior to the ceremony, did have some positive things to say about the night, including the several wins for the Asian American community. Three awards of the night went to “Beef,” starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun.
“It’s not just one, it’s for all of us,” Koy said.

Jo Koy was awful. A couple of the jokes landed, but most were amateurish. By the way, the Taylor Swift about NFL cameras was funny and harmless. It was not insulting to Swift at all. Swift is a humorless, stick up her ass moron.
Jo Koy's fans will still be his fans, but he didn't gain any new ones with that sub-par performance. Looking back, perhaps he shouldn't have accepted the gigif he only had 10 days to prepare, and his writers only had eight days. He was looking for an international audience and it failed.
