It seems to have some similarities to the dreadful Life Is Beautiful

Jerry looks kind of hot as the crying clown.

He was promoted as some kind of auteur genius in the late-60s, lots of plans for projects. By the 70s you never saw him outside of those telethons. Scorcese gave him a brief trip out of obscurity, but he never fulfilled his ambitions.

He'll be remembered for misogyny and cutting his kids out of his will.

R6 Clearly no one cares, sweetie.

by Anonymousreply 7January 8, 2024 9:26 PM

Helmut Doork sounds like a German porn star.

Timothee Chalamet IS Helmut Doork in The Day the Clown Cried Again

by Anonymousreply 9January 9, 2024 2:56 AM

and he's brilliant R9 Will he eligible for an Oscar?

by Anonymousreply 10January 9, 2024 3:20 AM

He was a total cunt.

by Anonymousreply 11January 9, 2024 4:28 AM

The BBC did a report on it in 2016.

He tried to rekindle the old magic in 1981 to disappointing results.

I thought it wasn’t ever finished.

by Anonymousreply 14January 9, 2024 6:02 AM

R14 after it's screened may be finished

by Anonymousreply 15January 9, 2024 6:47 AM

Oscars all around!

by Anonymousreply 16January 9, 2024 10:53 PM

The next Broadway musical blockbuster!

by Anonymousreply 17January 9, 2024 10:58 PM

The still photo at R12 of him being "wacky" by getting his fake nose hung up on the barbed wire... OMG!!! The disrespect. Who on earth-- aside from Lewis-- could have possibly thought this was a good idea?

by Anonymousreply 18January 10, 2024 12:30 AM

Jerry is unbearable in comedies and you want me to watch him in a Holocaust drama?!

by Anonymousreply 19January 10, 2024 12:44 AM

Horrible man

by Anonymousreply 20January 10, 2024 12:55 AM

Indisputably a classic, R16!

by Anonymousreply 21January 10, 2024 1:00 AM

In all likelihood it will be mediocre/terrible. The 'lost film' status is probably all it has going for it

by Anonymousreply 22January 10, 2024 1:01 AM

He was actually pretty good in 1995’s “Funny Bones.”

by Anonymousreply 23January 10, 2024 1:03 AM

Sigh. Am I the only one who watched this last night on TCM? It is best that it’s “lost”. I’m a little surprised the Swedish kids ,gassed at the climax, haven’t come forward with their own recollections.

by Anonymousreply 24December 18, 2024 7:22 AM

Was it really on TCM, R24? Good God! How did they introduce it? I'm not a big fan of trigger warnings, but in this case...

by Anonymousreply 25December 18, 2024 1:24 PM

It’s a shame it’s been screened. It was more fun as that thing that’s so awful, you’re not allowed to see it.

by Anonymousreply 26December 18, 2024 1:55 PM

No, R25. The made a documentary about it — and that’s what aired on TCM.

by Anonymousreply 27December 18, 2024 2:03 PM

The "acting" in this film was laughably bad, by everyone, and not just Jerry Lewis.

by Anonymousreply 28December 18, 2024 2:09 PM

TCM aired the documentary From Darkness To Light again this past weekend.

I agree with R2, Lewis looked hot as the crying clown.

by Anonymousreply 29May 22, 2025 3:10 AM

Every time I discover a shitty little movie that is forgotten it will inevitably include the tidbit, “Martin Scorsese considers this a masterpiece. He screened it at…”

by Anonymousreply 30May 22, 2025 3:25 PM

Martin saw everything as a kid because he had to escape the Mean Streets, Goodfellas and Taxi Drivers. It gave him Raging Bull.

by Anonymousreply 31May 23, 2025 7:30 AM

It's deliciously awful.
