Is Yankee Pot Roast Different from Regular Pot Roast?

What's the difference?

by Anonymousreply 34January 13, 2024 1:01 AM

From the interwebs:

[quot] Basically a pot roast is beef that is braised in liquid – but a Yankee-style pot roast is cooked and served with root vegetables (our recipe includes carrots, potatoes, parsnip and turnip).

Who knows whether this is accurate. I'm in New England myself, and will be taking a pot roast out of the oven in about a half hour, which has two root vegetables: carrots and potatoes.

Ask Grog…but really, don’t.

A yankee pot roast is made by a Yankee!

by Anonymousreply 3January 6, 2024 10:07 PM

Don’t even get in to the whole spoon roast thing.

We yank on it a little first. Yankee--get it?

by Anonymousreply 6January 6, 2024 10:14 PM

Seriously though, the pot roast adorned with a crowd of root vegetables--include onion, parsnip, turnip with carrots and potatoes--can't be beat.

That Yankee shit can't hold a candle to this pot roast:

R8: It looks like vomit.

It judges you as an outsider no matter how long you’ve been making it.

The NYT has a Mississippi pot roast recipe without those disgusting mixes.

Chuck roast with a stick of butter added? Good grief.

[quote]I could do a nice yankee pot roast. Mashed Potatoes, mixed vegetables, wild green salad. And for starters, my special, clam chowder.

Yes, it's just a TV show, but if a Yankee pot roast includes root vegetables like potatoes, why also serve mashed potatoes on the side?

Make R8’s recipe if you’ve a hankering for a week of the shits. Just be sure to stock up on toilet paper and charge your phone first.

Yes, you marinate the cook in gin at least an hour before the first guests arrive.

by Anonymousreply 23January 11, 2024 10:21 PM

R11 They de-fraued it.

by Anonymousreply 24January 11, 2024 10:33 PM

I use a nice chuck roast, cover it with slices of yellow onions, and put some water in the pan along with some olive oil drizzled over the roast. Salt and pepper crush a few cloves of garlic, and let it slow cook in a covered roasting pan at 325. Add carrots and potatoes about 45-an hour before it's finished.

by Anonymousreply 25January 12, 2024 12:11 AM

Oh. I also add some beef bullion to the water. and I put about 1,5 I'm thinking about 30-35 minutes per pound? I never write anything down and this is how my mother made it and I've been doing it that way for years. It yields great pan drippings for gravy, and the potatoes and carrots ar e delicious.

Some people add red wine or beer to their pot roast while it cooks.

by Anonymousreply 27January 12, 2024 12:15 AM

Yum, R5’s recipe post photo looks delish. 🍽️

Try pot roast in an instant pot. Amy + Jacky are the bomb! I have used MANY of their recipes, and they have all been superb.

I will definitely try this recipe, R32.

Thanks for sharing!

by Anonymousreply 33January 12, 2024 3:17 PM

FWIW, when I worked full time, I used a slow cooker, r31, so I could home to a hot meal. Now I put things in a dutch oven and cook in the oven at 225 for several hours. It tastes better.
