Does retin a live up to the hype?

I have got crows feet and some forehead lines that are starting to form. I also have slight acne on my forehead. I have been using differin with no results. I have an appointment with my dermatologist this week. Should I ask for retin a?

by Anonymousreply 67January 9, 2024 7:53 PM

It's pretty much the same thing as what you're currently using. You probably just haven't been using it long enough, it can take up to three months to see the first results.

Try adding niacinamide to your skincare routine, it'll help with both acne and collagen production. But again, you won't see results overnight.

by Anonymousreply 1January 2, 2024 5:01 AM

I’m 62 and I use it every night and do not have wrinkles. My late mother was an early adopter and her skin was flawless into her 80s when she died. It’s a cheap, easy thing to add to your skincare routine that makes a huge difference. Also, sunscreen is a game changer.

by Anonymousreply 2January 2, 2024 5:07 AM

There are different strengths of Differin. Over the counter is weaker. Ask the dermatologist the best product and tell him what you want it for. I used Retin A for 30 years from the age of 25. At 55 I switched to Differin gel. It's basically free on my insurance so I use it liberally. All round the neck. For two years I have used Differin on the back of my hands.

I am just about wrinkle free at 62 when I'm not smiling. Some wrinkles when I smile. My face sags and the impression is like a 60 year old not a 40 year old. But one with good skin for a white guy.

I will tell you a downside. Because I don't have wrinkles and don't look haggard, the other features of old skin kind of stand out where on a wizened old face they don't.

by Anonymousreply 3January 2, 2024 5:14 AM

I've been using it for a couple of years and it's been a game changer. I'm 86 years old and I constantly have people telling me that they thought I was in my 60s!

by Anonymousreply 4January 2, 2024 6:51 AM

I believe Retin-A (tretinoin) has been proven to be effective against photoaging and Differin (adalpene) not as effective. Since both work for acne, if you are wanting the additional anti-aging benefits, Retin-A is probably the better option.

That said, if you haven’t been using the differin for long, it is going to be difficult to assess your results; 2 - 3 months is when you should start seeing skin improvement (which is the case for all retinoids).

by Anonymousreply 5January 2, 2024 9:16 AM

Can’t wait to try it myself, in maybe three to four decades.

Right now, I constantly get rejected for roles because I look too young!

by Anonymousreply 6January 2, 2024 9:59 AM

I've been using it for a year and am starting to see results -- some smoothing but more for photo damage/sunspots.

It's definitely not a quick process and when increasing strengths you experience redness and dryness.

I'm 53. Fair skin.

by Anonymousreply 7January 2, 2024 12:49 PM

I used it for acne in my 20’s and I didn’t have any wrinkles so have no comment on that part. It works for acne but your skin will be super sensitive to sunlight

by Anonymousreply 8January 2, 2024 12:55 PM

Get a jar of organic, cold pressed avacado oil in the cooking section for ten bucks. It will last you a couple months. You'll thank me. Google what it does. You don't need this expensive chemical shit. 🥑

by Anonymousreply 9January 2, 2024 1:21 PM

Retin-A helped a lot with fine wrinkles, certainly not the deeper ones.

My skin tone overall is much better as well - very smooth looking. I use it every other day. I started with every day and my skin would get too flaky.

I've been using it about 2 years.

by Anonymousreply 10January 2, 2024 1:25 PM

And make sure the avacado oil is unrefined. Unrefined and cold pressed.

by Anonymousreply 11January 2, 2024 1:25 PM

"Avocado", Einstein. Also avocado oil is comedogenic on the face, for many people. Continue being an armchair dermatologist nimrod who can't spell, however.

by Anonymousreply 12January 2, 2024 1:27 PM

I use retin-A every day. I'm 42 but people are constantly surprised, thinking I'm only 40 or 41.

by Anonymousreply 13January 2, 2024 1:27 PM

OP, I’m a strong believer in revitalight treatments, as well. They are LED lights applied by a professional and help with acne, collagen production, etc. When I’m consistent with my visits, my skin looks incredible.

Ask your dermatologist about them and whether or not they can be used in conjunction with retinol but I believe they can.

by Anonymousreply 14January 2, 2024 1:29 PM

If someone is a person who has to pamper their skin, I feel like they wouldn’t be getting the full benefits of the product, because they would be using the lower percentage and using it less often and would be using other products to keep their face from flaking. I, on the other hand, have man skin, and can use the max strength and use it frequently and encourage the flaking of dead skin. I want to continuously peel off as much old dead skin as possible. Keeping the skin tight is prevention of wrinkles.

by Anonymousreply 15January 2, 2024 1:40 PM

You have to keep it away from your eyes because it will cause incurable dry eye which is apparently a lot more terrible than Jennifer Anniston would lead you believe. It totally works tho. I use it with niamicide and vitamin c and of course daily sunscreen from Korea. It's amazing stuff and wish I'd been using forever

by Anonymousreply 16January 2, 2024 1:45 PM

I have used Retin A / trentinoin for the last 15 years and my skin in wrinkle free.

However, my sister and my cousin have no wrinkles either and they do not use Retin A. My sister uses avocado oil in her face every night.

Experiment, and see what works for you.

To answer your question, yes speak with your dermatologist. Best to use the right cream / ointment for your skin type and goals. Ideally he/she will start you on the correct prescription cream before you waste hundreds of dollars on drugstore brands which may not give you the results you want.

Crows feet - the deeper lines that form when you smile - won't go away with creams or lotions. You need botox to address the underlying muscle.

by Anonymousreply 18January 2, 2024 3:39 PM

I'm too scared to use it as I'm in Australia and also exfoliate every day.

There's no escaping the sun completely where I am, even with sunscreen, hat and sunglasses, as it reflects off so many surfaces.

by Anonymousreply 19January 3, 2024 8:22 AM

That's why everyone in Australia look so old.

by Anonymousreply 20January 3, 2024 3:44 PM

I used it for cystic acne that suddenly started in my late twenties. My skin flared up badly for a few weeks after starting it. Once things calmed down, my acne went away. It's been about 5 years and I no longer get pimples.

I don't really recommend it for fine lines or wrinkles. It's pretty harsh on your skin and won't get rid them. I have the prescription grade stuff. A bit of botox is the best solution. That and a good skincare routine.

by Anonymousreply 21January 3, 2024 5:25 PM

It most Definitely keeps fine lines and wrinkles in check when used over many years regularly. You are not a dermatologist R21. You don't need the higher concentrations, in fact, for anti-aging.

by Anonymousreply 22January 3, 2024 7:27 PM

r16 tell me about the sunscreen from Korea. Any particular brands you recommend?

by Anonymousreply 23January 3, 2024 11:27 PM

I use Canmake Mermaid Gel. Someone here recommended it and every once in awhile I get pissed about the smallness of the tunes and try something else and I always go back to the Mermaid

by Anonymousreply 24January 3, 2024 11:38 PM

Mermaid is shit

by Anonymousreply 25January 3, 2024 11:55 PM

R20, friends from the UK and Canada have gorgeous skin.

by Anonymousreply 26January 4, 2024 12:46 AM

You should start out low percentage. Use 1-3 times a week. Allow your skin to adjust. Increase number of times per week after no irritation. Once up to every day increase percentage. Go back to 1-3 times a week. Etc.

Yes, it works but people give up because of the irritation. See above. But it takes up to six months and continued to use.

by Anonymousreply 27January 4, 2024 12:46 AM

Yes.

I started it at 35 and I’m now 60.

No crows feet

Just avoid the sun.

by Anonymousreply 28January 4, 2024 12:58 AM

someone said not to put near eyes because it will cause incurable dry eye, but don't you need to put it on side of eyes for wrinkles?

by Anonymousreply 29January 4, 2024 12:58 AM

Yes, I use Retin A with azelaic acid every day and it's a game changer. Skin looks great and a few dark spots have gone away.

by Anonymousreply 30January 4, 2024 1:02 AM

I agree with the avacado oil, retinol can damage your skin. I used it for a year, not and really noticeable results.

by Anonymousreply 31January 4, 2024 1:04 AM

I was treated for acne as a teenager with Retin A and heavy duty Benzoil Peroxide. Retin A was a new drug at the time and worked beautifully for a number of years. In my mid thirties, I started to break out again and took a round of Accutaine — a very powerful and concentrated form of vitamin A. (Be sure to research it before going on it. There are multiple side effects but, fortunately, I didn’t experience any of these.) I haven’t had a blemish since and, for somebody my age, my skin is in pretty good condition. The downside of Retin A: sun sensitivity. If you don’t take precautions, you can get a serious burn.

by Anonymousreply 32January 4, 2024 1:05 AM

Yes, I use Retin A with azelaic acid every day and it hasn’t stopped me from looking like dog shit.. Skin wrinkled like beef jerky.

by Anonymousreply 33January 4, 2024 1:09 AM

The skin below my eyebrows is starting to sag. I don't want to have surgery and retin A isn't a good fit for me. What else is worth trying?

by Anonymousreply 34January 4, 2024 1:15 AM

what part of face do you spread it? entire? entire neck?

by Anonymousreply 35January 4, 2024 1:18 AM

I get my acne medicine from Redbox Rx. My rosecea is way down. Retin A is good medicine.

by Anonymousreply 36January 4, 2024 1:21 AM

R34 Welcome to my hooded eyes.

I looked at a recent photo and the eye drop on the left looked so wrong I looked like a stroke victim.

I’m off tho the surgeon ASAP!

Also, Nancy Pelosi has had excellent eye work over the years. I don’t wat to look that “awake” but something more subtle would work.

And since it’s starting to impede my vision, there’s a chance insurance will cover it.

by Anonymousreply 37January 4, 2024 1:25 AM

It works at 64 I have relatively wrinkle-free skin with few sunspots or dis- colorizations. You have to work through the purging stage were your skin is very sensitive, dry and is peeling a lot that lasts about 2 weeks. Once you're past that daily application is suggested along with daily use of a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. My dermatologist recommends a zinc oxide based product with no benzene. Although they say that it helps rebuild collagen I would not say that it helps immensely with skin sagging but it did help in the neck area for me. The downside is you can never tan or use a tanning bed. It can shave a good 5 to 10 years off.

by Anonymousreply 38January 4, 2024 1:34 AM

Hi Pigs! (And Ugly old OP!)

I have been using Retin A for 20 years and just yesterdee was asked by a police offer on the street where my mommy was.

I look about 3 years old in bad lighting and owe it all to Retin-A.

OP, don't bother. It's too late for you.

And the rest of you? Don't bother- your ship has sailed.

Its about me now. And its my time.

by Anonymousreply 39January 4, 2024 3:03 AM

R37 is adorable and looks like that creature from The Goonies!

Why don't you wear a hood that covers your face like that little murderous troll in Don't Look Now?

by Anonymousreply 40January 4, 2024 3:06 AM

R19 Don't use Tretinoin during the day. Use it at night only.

by Anonymousreply 41January 4, 2024 3:10 AM

R38 is wrong! Dead wrong!

Per my manual, slather on the Retin A in the morning and evening.

Around 2 PM, get your sun reflector thing like Pauly Walnuts used on The Sopranos and let the sun make the Retin-A sizzle like butter on a skillet.

Once you hear the pop pop pop and you get blisters- you have made it!

Repeat every afternoon until your skin burns off.

Repeat until there is only a skull left and no one will be able to guess how old or ugly you are.

by Anonymousreply 42January 4, 2024 3:11 AM

R41 is a liar and looks like a stump.

Wear Retin a during the day and mix it with toothpaste and SCRUB!!!! Scrub it hard until the years just fall away-

Then go out in the sun and catch those rays momma!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 43January 4, 2024 3:13 AM

R42 R43 - when intellectually handicapped trolls attempt comedy.

by Anonymousreply 44January 4, 2024 3:16 AM

r43 It would appear you are attempting to be funny? You simply seem desperate for attention. I hope your day improves.

by Anonymousreply 45January 4, 2024 11:16 AM

Avoiding the sun is the absolute best thing you can do for your skin.

by Anonymousreply 46January 4, 2024 1:34 PM

Stay inside and watch your soaps!

by Anonymousreply 47January 6, 2024 1:19 PM

How good is avocado oil for your face? It works as a wonderful antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory skincare ingredient and also increases collagen production. Avocado oil for the skin is an especially good component to use if you have skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, but can be used on all skin types.

by Anonymousreply 48January 6, 2024 1:44 PM

See R12 - avocado oil is comedogenic on the face for many people. (Info from my dermatologist.)

by Anonymousreply 49January 6, 2024 2:57 PM

Jesus, avocado is the new coconut oil, it's not miraculous.

by Anonymousreply 50January 8, 2024 9:11 PM

WHICH PART OF YOUR FACE DO YOU PUT IT ON?!!!!

FOREHEAD TO NECK?!!

BUY FROM MEXICO OR INDIAN ONLINE PHARMACY FOR CHEAPER RATES?

WHAT STRENGTH PERCENT?

by Anonymousreply 51January 8, 2024 9:15 PM

Get it on prescription so your insurance covers it, darling. Let your dermatologist advise you on the best strength.

by Anonymousreply 52January 8, 2024 10:03 PM

I recently saw a dermatologist for a non-skin issue. She casually presumed I, at 66, was receiving some skin treatment. She expressed surprise when I told her I was not.

by Anonymousreply 53January 8, 2024 10:08 PM

Nothing lives up to the hype.

by Anonymousreply 54January 8, 2024 10:11 PM

Beanie fucking Babies lived up to the hype.

by Anonymousreply 55January 8, 2024 11:51 PM

I don't know what is in this shit from Amazon but it fucking works wonders. Relatively cheap. Been using it for a month and people have asked me what I am doing and how good my skin looks. All I do is wash my face and use this in the morning.

I'm 54, male, I take a very low dose of 5mg accutane (isotetinoin) a day. This is not all that uncommon among male dermatologists, of which I am not. I take it for sebaceous hyperplasia, but it gives me all the tretinoin benefits without many of the downsides. A secret in the dermatologist community is that many find retinoids too irritating and discontinue usage, and this is common among their patients as well.

* don't do this if you could conceive or are not taking contraceptives

by Anonymousreply 57January 9, 2024 2:17 AM

r57 do you find it dries out your skin? Is it a tablet? I thought it was an injection.

by Anonymousreply 58January 9, 2024 2:21 AM

IS A SYMPTOM OF RETIN-A USE REFUSING TO ANSWER WHEN SOMEONE ASKS IF YOU SHOULD BE APPLYING IT FROM THE NECK TO THE TOP OF YOUR FOREHEAD???!!!

Some have said not to put around eyes, nobody has said exactly where you are applying it. It seems like you would go through a tube quickly if applying all over neck/face each night.

by Anonymousreply 59January 9, 2024 2:24 AM

R58 - retin-a, a synthetic form of vitamin a, is usually applied topically in gel or cream form, in different concentrations. In the USA it is prescription only, and the majority of scientific studies on the effect of vitamins a synthetic derivatives have been done using this form of vitamin a. But there are also other forms such as retinol, retinal, and retinaldehyde, which have similar but slightly different effects. It gets very confusing.

Isotretinoin In oral form is typically used to treat severe acne. In the US it's administered in relatively high doses for a short period of time. It can have severe side effects but basically cures the acne issues permanently. In other countries it is administered in lower does for longer periods of time. It can also help address problems with hyperactive or malfunctioning sebaceous glands in the skin, which is why I take it.

I'm unaware of it being injected.

Also I'm NOT a dermatologist or doctor and I may have mischaracterized things based on my limited understanding so don't take my word for anything

by Anonymousreply 60January 9, 2024 2:36 AM

I rub the Retin-A! from my lady potato up through my boobsies canal up to my chicken waddle neck, up through my nose around both my necks, then back on down to my taint and back to my lady potato.

Rubbing it on the lady potato helps keep it tight and not needing any of that lady potato-plasty to tighten her up.

On warm summer days I hoist my lady potato up towards the sky so the sun can hit and fry it.

I look about 18 years old and i am 97.

by Anonymousreply 61January 9, 2024 3:10 AM

damn you, r61 lol

by Anonymousreply 62January 9, 2024 3:57 AM

Don't use it around your eyes. It won't do anything but dry it out. I've done it lightly for years anyway but nada. I think at a certain point, it's an eye lift if you want substantial results. I've used a bunch of the Ordinary stuff for years and I think it's helped. The esthetician asked what I used so I took that as an affirmative. Apply this stuff to your upper chest too because I didn't and it's a bit obvious. I have old freckles/age spots from the sunbathing days of olde.

by Anonymousreply 63January 9, 2024 4:44 AM

If you don't apply to eyes, how can it help with crows feet?

by Anonymousreply 64January 9, 2024 5:39 PM

niacinamide?

by Anonymousreply 65January 9, 2024 5:43 PM

r61 I will forever use the term Lady Potato now. Thank you and god bless you.

by Anonymousreply 66January 9, 2024 6:03 PM
