January Gifts Being Returned On DOOL 2024
The other thread has probably been paywalled.
No surprise arrivals in Salem this NYE (just Leo doing The Batdance from '89)
Holly went down for the count foaming at the mouth over 2 guys she couldn't manipulate.
All the hetero couples had their usual holiday kisses proudly displayed (poor Leo & Dimetri)
Discuss.

It seems that no one (including Maggie and Holly) remember they are related.

I liked Gwen immediately. I still find O'Brien's Theresa problematic.

Most Daytime Emmy commentators still feel that Dee was totally robbed of the award for her dramatic portrayal as "Nurse Barbara Anderson" on Y&R in 1973. But the soap was new that year, and the old guard was prejudicial.

Perhaps, but I've somewhat appreciated that not everything is jokey and campy and that some of this stuff seems like an actual soap and not some Dynasty camp-off. Plus, the scenes seem longer and more thoughtful.

R70 Judi Evans (Bonnie) is only recurring, non-contract, so they only play her as needed. And if you take into consideration that they often play her opposite screen-partner Wally Kurth (Justin), then you might have to take his schedule/availability into consideration as well, since he's also on General Hospital.

The plots aren't all that compelling -- they're Ron's holdovers, for the most part -- but I appreciate that these writers are taking time to play multiple beats of each story and crafting scenes that are longer than 30 seconds. I'm betting the actors appreciate the change, too.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | January 12, 2024 6:20 PM

[quote] ... and crafting scenes that are longer than 30 seconds. I'm betting the actors appreciate the change, too.
Maybe, maybe not. Scenes in daytime soaps these days are typically short, due to how the production schedule doesn't allow for much, if any, rehearsal time.
Since TPTB want to produce scenes in one take, the shorter the scenes are, the less fuck ups there are. .. Actors do a scene, then the directors cut, with actors reviewing the script for the next one, so it's fresh in their head. .. The longer the scene, the more difficult this quick production routine may become to avoid making mistakes.

Doug needs a villain to kill him off. So many times villains try to kill someone only for them to survive . It really is a trope on this show.
Victor dies in a plane crash instead of by Kristen, Dr. Rolf or someone else? No more goody two shoes dying by accident or in their sleep.
It would be a great tribute to Bill's masterful acting as Satan (when the character returned several years ago & possessed him) if the writers brought the devil back to kill Doug off & let Julie mount up a team to rid Salem of his presence once and for all. It'd also be a great way for them to introduce a new Gabi (now devil possessed and using his powers to break out of prison) as Doug's killer so Julie can really hate on her for the rest of the show's existence.

R126, my favorites are:
Female: Emily O'Brien as either Gwen or Theresa and then Tamara Braun as Ava Vitale
Male: Billy Flynn as Chad Dimera and then Robert Scott Wilson as Alex Kiriakis - it took quite a while for me to like him in the role - I did not care for him as Ben Weston.
I don't have the history watching the show to appreciate the older characters but do understand why they were/are so popular.
I do kind of like how the show doesn't seem to mind a popular actor taking on a different role in very short time periods (O'Brien or Wilson). I also don't mind the show shifting characters off the canvas probably for budget reasons - as it always seems temporary. It keeps the show fresh, and you appreciate when the actor returns to the canvas. It is not real, so why not have a little fun with it. I loved how the show managed Emily O'Brien's transition between roles - Gwen saw shown exiting the terminal to go onto the plane and moments later she was shown entering the terminal from the plane as Theresa (with blond wig). It was a riot.

R134 is Ben the one who strangled Strudel? What do you think of Marlena as a character?
by Anonymous | reply 135 | January 20, 2024 1:55 PM
|
I only started watching the show after watching Beyond Salem. Yes, Ben was the strangler - before my time. I like Marlena but her main storylines in my time watching the show was her (yet again) devil possession and her "death" with Kate and Kayla.
When Guiding Light killed off Maureen Bauer and it proved to be unpopular, I found it odd they could not figure out how to reverse that. They did not have to go the DAYS "death" route where no one is ever really dead no matter how outrageous the "story" is. But they could have gone the twin route - Bea Reardon had twins and gave one of the twins up for adoption at birth. The twin could have been found working in a laundromat on 5th street - a streetwise woman the complete opposite of Maureen who Ed falls in love with. It could have been fun watching the character adjust to a more privileged life.

I think the cast is too big for the show's current budget, which means people get shuffled off. Personally I think they should cut things down to about 15-20 contract players, and put people like John, Marlena, Steve, and Kayla on recurring. Then refocus the show around a 20s-40s age group and a teen story, and stop with playing the greatest hits from the 80s. They also have characters who duplicate energy. Send this weird looking EJ packing and just keep Stephan. What does Everett bring to the table? What is the point of Stephanie? Why is Johnny being wasted?

R156 what's your favourite Marlena moments?
by Anonymous | reply 157 | January 20, 2024 4:24 PM
|
R157, as I mentioned upthread, I really only started watching the show a couple of years ago after watching Beyond Salem. I hadn't watched a soap since high school, which was peak Guiding Light years. Marlena's major story lines during my time were the devil possession (most recent) and her "death" along with Kayla and Kate. They were certainly entertaining and think the devil storyline is what kept me watching initially and fully understand the popularity of the long-term cast members. It was really hard to start watching a soap with a long history as a new viewer - I am still trying to sort out the history and relationships of characters. It was very much like moving to a different state and not knowing anyone, but everyone there had been living their lives for years. Soaps just aren't that interesting without knowing the history. I don't know how the shows could help here but think it could help attract new viewers if they could figure something out to help new viewers.

Be careful, r158. The poster you are interacting with at r155, r157, et al, is seriously deranged.
He posts about jacking off thinking about Deidre Hall smoking cigarettes, about eating pussy, and other nonsense.

He is a full-on creep.

LOL @ R159. I very much enjoy having gay characters and relationships on the show - something it is clearly lacking right now. Leo can be amusing, but eye rolling at the same time. That said (and it will probably get me put on ignore...lol), but I was more into Sonny than Will.

[quote]Who is top billed on this program?
Since the beginning Days has listed it's cast by seniority. Currently Suzanne Rogers has the most seniority and is first in the cast credits. Mac Carey, I believe, had a starring credit since the beginning. Frances Reid got an also starring credit in the 80s. When Deidre returned in the 90s, she got an "and" credit and appeared at the end. When Wayne Northrup returned he got the "with" credit.
When Dee was let go and returned her agent clearly didn't negotiate an "and" credit. So she was put back into seniority order, where she remains to this day.
I'm sort of nerd about soap opera main and end titles. Ask me anything.

NATAS has Dee scheduled to receive her Lifetime Achievement Daytime Emmy in about 35 years when she's a senior cast member in her 70s.

Most episodes now have 1/3 actresses & 2/3 actors in each one.
I wonder if the behind the scene drama has anything to do with this imbalance?
The show where Maggie came to see Holly before she gets shipped off had 5 actresses & 8 actors in it.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | January 20, 2024 9:40 PM

The audience is made up mainly of straight women and old gay men. Both groups would rather look at actors.

True R173 but this is a recent development which is why I asked.
Gabi left & Bonnie hasn't been seen for almost 6 months now but every episode now has a drop in female characters.
Granted guest stars Lucas, Clyde, Constantine & Harris are adding more maleness to recent episodes but Demetri, Li & Dr. Rolf also left recently & Doug is hardly seen compared to Julie.

Julie was on more than Doug because Bill Hayes was in his 90s, whereas Susan Hayes is in her late 70s.
Bill may have been healthy enough to continue filming up until 2 months before his death. But that doesn't mean he had the stamina to perform the number of days that Susan did or memorize the number of lines that Susan did.

R180 We all know the age difference here of the D & J pairing. The issue on the table is the cast gender difference of the past couple weeks which never existed in the past 2 decades of viewing. Does any insiders have a reason for it or see an end in sight?

Mon.'s episode had just 3 females = Maggie, Marlena & NuTheresa.

August 5, 2023 at 4:27 p.m. | UPDATED: August 5, 2023 at 8:27 p.m. “Days of Our Lives” co-executive producer Albert Alarr has exited the long-running soap opera after an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct, according to reports.
So, six they record the show about six months ahead, we should only have a few more weeks of Fat Albert.

It's one thing to be boring, but another to be boring and bad. If I didn't know that the scab material was temporary, I'd take a break from the show. And the obvious cue card reading (Everett, Johnny, Wendy, Harris) on Thursday...
by Anonymous | reply 201 | January 25, 2024 10:28 AM

I don't think there are cue cards any longer. If actors need help with lines I think they run an electronic version of the script on one of the stage monitors. I don't think these soaps have the time or money to pay for someone to make and hold cue cards. I know the guy at Y&R (also Sony) who did this was laid off over 20 years ago.

R195 No to both. The 3 females did not interact. Alex caught Nu-T kissing Brady, Mags broke up 1-i & Greeky & after Doc was spared Kung Fu Fighter John's deadly moves she went to visit Eric i with the baby. No females interacted yet again. Most of girl on girl scenes have been mother daughter = Kayla & Steph & Paulina & Channy. I can't recall when Mags & Doc wee in the same room together. has it been over a decade now? Did she condole Mags after Vicky died?

Tues. show had Ava (& Stefan) hiring Steph for public relations & they talked about her 1 night stand with Harris so that's some non relative female bonding there.
