Anthony Hopkins

Today the the thespian turns 86!

His very first film was The Lion in Winter. Ever since, he has never stopped working- Hamlet, A Doll's House, When Eight Bells Toll, A Bridge Too Far, Othello, The Elephant Man, The Bounty, 84 Charring Cross Road, The Silence of the Lambs, Howards End, The Remains of the Day, Nixon, Amistad, The Mask of Zorro, Thor, Hitchcock, Lear, The Two Popes, The Father, and The Son.

Despite his prestigious film career, he has kept out of the tabloids. He doesn't go to big parties and he doesn't stay out late. He said he would rather sit at home and play the piano.

Such a wonderful voice, and very on the spectrum

by Anonymousreply 11December 31, 2023 10:02 PM

R7 oops. I meant Suzanne Somers

by Anonymousreply 12December 31, 2023 10:12 PM

R11 on the spectrum? How?

by Anonymousreply 13December 31, 2023 10:17 PM

Lol I did a double take at the suggestion he starred with Maggie from DOOL

by Anonymousreply 14December 31, 2023 10:23 PM

I don't know about that, R4. Katharine Hepburn did all right in The Lion in Winter opposite Hopkins. She held her own against O'Toole too. I always forget that playing a young Richard the Lionheart was Hopkins first movie and it was Dalton's first movie role too as Philip II.

One of my favorite scenes:

I would say that Jodie Foster, Jessica Lange and Debra Winger did well too. I don't see anything special about Thompson in TROTD, she was very good in Howard's End though.

by Anonymousreply 16December 31, 2023 10:40 PM

R15 That is a great scene. They were obviously lovers. The Lion in Winter's entire cast was great- O'Toole, Kate Hepburn, Hopkins, Dalton, John Castle, and Nigel Terry.

R16 To me, Thompson and Hopkins have so much more chemistry

by Anonymousreply 17December 31, 2023 10:51 PM

What about the stories that he was a big homo?

by Anonymousreply 18December 31, 2023 10:56 PM

I've heard that he was a big homo and I've also heard that he "kept" CZJ for a while. Obviously this had to be when she was a toddler at most so - pedo.

by Anonymousreply 19December 31, 2023 11:01 PM

R18 Because he is British and sophisticated

by Anonymousreply 20December 31, 2023 11:03 PM

His best performance is The Remains of the Day.

by Anonymousreply 21December 31, 2023 11:13 PM

Did he ever act alongside Pia Zadora?

by Anonymousreply 22December 31, 2023 11:17 PM

[quote] Lol I did a double take at the suggestion he starred with Maggie from DOOL

LOOL! :)

Who is top billed on that program?

by Anonymousreply 23December 31, 2023 11:27 PM

He is Anthony Hopkins!

by Anonymousreply 24December 31, 2023 11:27 PM

R23 haha Deidre Hall

by Anonymousreply 25December 31, 2023 11:31 PM

Both Anthony Hopkins and Eric Porter played Lear in productions of King Lear.

by Anonymousreply 26December 31, 2023 11:33 PM

It was funny when Goop pronounced his name as "Antony" at the Oscars. Later on he said he had no idea why she said it that way. He always goes by "Tony" or "Anthony" to people who know him. Goop fucked up trying to sound posh and English. I think she was with Chris Martin at the time and used to go around pontificating about the superiority of British dinner guests and their conversational skills.

I wonder what is behind his falling out with his daughter

Isn’t Danny Thomas one?

by Anonymousreply 30December 31, 2023 11:47 PM

[quote]Did he ever act alongside Pia Zadora?

They did The Owl & the Pussycat on the Kenley circuit.

by Anonymousreply 31December 31, 2023 11:53 PM

He was still drinking heavily when he walked out on his daughter and his daughter's mother. I'm sure he must have been a big, drunk asshole at the time. Why he cut the girl off as an adult is anybody's guess. He got her two roles in movies he was in. Now she's an acting teacher? Trading off of his name, no doubt and upon their "reunion" she probably expected to be movie-star rich. He doesn't strike me as financially generous but he does say that his wife enjoys spending his money.

It sucks to take it out any grandchildren he may have but he's a cold fish, our Mr. Hopkins.

by Anonymousreply 32December 31, 2023 11:53 PM

Told this story here before, but a thousand years ago I worked at a very fancy restaurant and Hopkins and his wife were regulars. He was the kindest, gentlest man. We all loved him. He remembered the staff's names. And what we were doing in our lives. Always asked. He was just the best.

I remember when I heard he had no contact with his kid(s), I was shocked. Of course, I know how one is in public is often different than at home. But dammit, I wished he was my dad just from the multiple times I served him!

by Anonymousreply 33January 1, 2024 12:02 AM

To give a proper example: Anthony Hopkins IS on the autism spectrum.

Brilliant actor, humble man.

by Anonymousreply 36January 1, 2024 12:56 AM

He is a wonderful man to work with. I have nothing bad to say about him. A class act.

by Anonymousreply 37January 1, 2024 1:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 41January 1, 2024 11:57 AM

One of the very best ever!

by Anonymousreply 42January 1, 2024 3:36 PM

[quote]His very first film was The Lion in Winter. Ever since, he has never stopped working

His acting career didn't begin with his first film.

by Anonymousreply 43January 1, 2024 3:40 PM

When he was a Guest Programmer on TCM, he told Robert Osborne his favorite actor was Humphrey Bogart.

by Anonymousreply 44January 1, 2024 3:41 PM

Love him, a real treasure.

by Anonymousreply 45January 1, 2024 3:42 PM

I also liked him in Nixon.

by Anonymousreply 46January 1, 2024 3:57 PM

I'm not sure his Hitler was a career high point.

by Anonymousreply 49January 1, 2024 4:07 PM

Before 1990, he was a respected English character actor. After 1991, he became a star.

He was only in 12 out of the 150 minutes of the Silence of the Lambs.

by Anonymousreply 50January 1, 2024 5:47 PM

Dead serial misogynist Sean Connery could never.

by Anonymousreply 51January 1, 2024 6:12 PM

R50 Screen Time Central lists him as being on screen for 25 minutes out of the 118 minutes run time. He definitely stole the shoe though

by Anonymousreply 52January 1, 2024 6:57 PM

[quote] stole the shoe though

Second-rate shoes.
