Are there any good department stores or furniture store chains in the US to buy a sofa?

Any suggestions? All I keep finding is Raymour and Flanigan, Crate and Barrel and IKEA.

Pottery Barn? LOL just kidding. I don't know about how good or bad they are.

I see Ashley Furniture everywhere. No clue how good (or bad) they are either.

Also Scandinavian Designs. That may be local, but i really feel I saw them in both Northern and Southern California, as well as Upstate NY area. I could be wrong though.

We got our wonderful sofa at Macy's.

Some more options:

Higher End/$$$$ -- Room & Board, West Elm (part of the Pottery Barn/Williams-Sonoma chain), Ethan Allen.

Mass Market/$$ -- Living Spaces, Rooms To Go, La-Z-Boy.

West Elm has nice tasteful designs and the prices aren't bad, but at that price point the quality, on close inspection, isn't that great. But I really like their look.

Ethan Allan?

by Anonymousreply 5December 31, 2023 4:27 AM

R5 Yes, and it's spelled Allen.

Design Within Reach. Or as I've nicknamed it, Design Out of Reach.

Room and Board is great and made in America.

It's definitely not trash, but I agree, it's not 5 star quality either. Lots of very overstuffed couches that really aren't built that well.

I can’t even remember where I got my last sofa. I think the place went out of business. They have way more in catalog than on the floor which is terrible because you have to sit on a sofa and make sure it’s comfortable before buying.

I was appalled by Restoration Hardware. I mean c'mon. Ok, some of it is nice, but lots of it up-close looks like shit made in Cambodia or somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 11December 31, 2023 5:46 AM

It's not a chain but its made in USA

I went into Ashley Furniture once years ago. It can't be quality furniture because the store had a noticeable smell of off-gassing. A definite turn off.

by Anonymousreply 15December 31, 2023 6:26 AM

Neiman Marcus sells furniture. I assume the quality is good.

OP, if you have money to burn go to ABC. (Their warehouse store is slightly less spendy.)

Another vote for Room and Board.

by Anonymousreply 18December 31, 2023 9:26 AM

I have a bed from Ashley that pops up in porn. A lot.

by Anonymousreply 19December 31, 2023 9:34 AM

Value City. They use the same suppliers as Raymour & Flannigan but their prices are significantly lower.

by Anonymousreply 20December 31, 2023 11:05 AM

I bought a couch at Macy's in July after many recommendations from friends. It's OK--the price was right but they kill you on the delivery fee.

by Anonymousreply 21December 31, 2023 12:16 PM

R11 RH is definitely spotty quality....and so much of their shit is made for people w/giant McMansions.

Scandinavian Designs is in a few states - they are owned by the same company that owns Dania Furniture, which is the brand they use in and around Chicago.

Living Spaces is also more of a West Coast thing, I think. They are probably in the same class as general furniture stores like Ashley, though I think they carry smaller couches/loveseats. I believe Nate and Jeremiah have a line with them.

I've had a few friends say they really made out on a deal with Macy's, but as R21 says watch out for delivery fees.

Baker furniture if you have the money.

by Anonymousreply 24December 31, 2023 3:32 PM

Bob's Discount Furniture.

I’d say Macy’s too. They’re the only decent one left.

Muscle bears Chris Hazard and Roger Stout have their own line of furniture.
