Marijuana Intoxication in a Dog

Have any of you been through this with your dog? The dog was fine all yesterday, my wife took him for a walk in the evening then went out to dinner with a friend. When I came home he was unable to get up from the floor doing the Katherine Hepburn thing with his head unable to focus his eyes. Hundreds of dollars later at the emergency vet he was diagnosed as stoned, given a huge shot of water and instructed to let him sleep it off for 24 hours. It’s terrifying. Any words of wisdom from those who have been through it?

by Anonymousreply 68January 1, 2024 10:48 PM

Do a Reddit search on this topic. I remember seeing some things on this when I was researching CBD. If you add the word "Reddit" to a google search, it gives better results than searching within Reddit itself.

by Anonymousreply 1December 29, 2023 11:34 AM

You better lock the stash up from now on girl. The dog's found the gateway.

by Anonymousreply 2December 29, 2023 11:36 AM

Where did he get the marijuana?

by Anonymousreply 3December 29, 2023 11:38 AM

Unclear, but he’s incorrigible about eating things he should not while out on walks.

by Anonymousreply 4December 29, 2023 11:40 AM

ElderLez, so sorry this is happening. I am delighted to know, however, that you are not dead! 😺

by Anonymousreply 5December 29, 2023 11:40 AM

I haven’t been through this specifically but it sounds like he needs to let it work through his system. I’d do a bland diet (rice, chicken, maybe some canned pumpkin) for a few days and just let him rest. Sounds scary!

by Anonymousreply 6December 29, 2023 11:45 AM

One time a friend and I were getting stoned while watching Hoarders. When we weren't looking, her Chihuahua ate from the ashtray and got higher than we could ever dream of.

The ashtray has since been put far out of the dog's reach.

by Anonymousreply 7December 29, 2023 11:45 AM

R4 - you better find out where he got it so it doesn't happen again.

by Anonymousreply 8December 29, 2023 11:48 AM

Oh man, if he’d eat or drink anything I’d be so happy.

by Anonymousreply 9December 29, 2023 11:49 AM

jesus, feed them a hotdog because we can guess what you use them for!

by Anonymousreply 10December 29, 2023 11:51 AM

Nothing says old clown like a puerile lesbian sex joke. 🤡

by Anonymousreply 11December 29, 2023 11:53 AM

I hope he feels better soon but keep a close eye on him and be alert for any other symptoms. The diagnosis seems dubious to me.

by Anonymousreply 12December 29, 2023 11:54 AM

R12

Why would the Dx seem dubious unless the OP has not had and did not have any MJ at all in the house. MJ or drug intoxication for dogs and kids is more common as more people have drugs and mj in the house.

And dogs are really good at getting into shit not meant for them

by Anonymousreply 13December 29, 2023 11:59 AM

Your dog had to have eaten an edible, not marijuana in flower form. The sugar would be attractive. The cellulose in the cell walls of the leaf would prevent the THC from escaping in the digestive process. You'd see leaf in his poop. My dog can't stand the smell. He's curious when I open a package. I let him sniff and he'll turn his head away and give me an offended looking glance. Same when I offer a sniff of my coffee (with milk).

by Anonymousreply 14December 29, 2023 11:59 AM

[quote] When I came home he was unable to get up from the floor doing the Katherine Hepburn thing with his head unable to focus his eyes.

It’s ‘Katharine’.

by Anonymousreply 15December 29, 2023 12:04 PM

The vet said he sees at least one case a week now that there are dispensaries in town. I don’t have a stash and my wife’s was untouched. (I did originally blame her) so given the timing I am going with the street. He does like the smell, but he also likes coffee au lair and Chardonnay according to the pet sitter we no longer use.

by Anonymousreply 16December 29, 2023 12:06 PM

Assuming it's just THC, he should recover just fine. It's lipophyllic, so it takes at least several days to be eliminated. He should maintain hydration for the sake of health, but giving excessive fluids doesn't actually clear the drug any faster. The theobromine in chocolate is specifically toxic to dogs (THC may have been in chocolate), but it takes quite a bit to be seriously health or life-threatening.

by Anonymousreply 17December 29, 2023 12:23 PM

Count yourself lucky.

Isn't that really bad for dogs? Amber Heard's dog ate some of Johnny Depp's weed, and it developed bowel problems and got brain damage.

by Anonymousreply 19December 29, 2023 12:36 PM

[quote]MJ or drug intoxication for dogs and kids is more common as more people have drugs and mj in the house.

Yes, vets see a lot of this now and it can really fuck dogs up. My in-laws were slow to realize their Boston terrier got into their CBD gummies, and once they knew what happened their only concern was that the gummies didn't contain Xylitol. They decided to let him 'sleep it off' and he was practically comatose for a week. (We weren't told of it until later or would've tried to intervene.)

Best wishes for your dog's recovery, ElderLez. He's lucky to have good parents.

by Anonymousreply 20December 29, 2023 12:41 PM

Xylitol is a non-nutrative sugar alcohol used for sugar replacement/low carb diets. It is HIGHLY TOXIC to dogs, but not to humans. It can cause dramatic drops in blood sugar that can lead to seizures and death. It's most commonly found in sugar-free chewing gum. I haven't encountered it in marijuana edibles yet, but it could be.

by Anonymousreply 21December 29, 2023 12:57 PM

Oh ElderLez, I’m so sorry and I hope the pup is better soon. Let’s hope that dope wasn’t a gateway to harder things. First he’s smoking a bowl, then a friend convinces him to experiment with LSD, then he decides he wants to try MDMA, next thing you know he’s tied off in a corner injecting what we can only assume isn’t scooby snacks.

But seriously, I don’t know anything about what is or isn’t toxic or safe for pets so I’m just here to offer terrible emotional support . ☹️. I hope he gets better and starts eating and drinking again soon. And so sorry this happened to the fella.

by Anonymousreply 22December 29, 2023 12:59 PM

He's gonna want to listen to some Allman Brothers and chill.

by Anonymousreply 23December 29, 2023 1:06 PM

[quote]It's most commonly found in sugar-free chewing gum. I haven't encountered it in marijuana edibles yet, but it could be.

It's in some brands of CBD gummies but probably isn't too common beyond that. The theobromine in chocolate is one of the bigger concerns with edibles, as mentioned at R17.

With chocolate you have to consider the dog's size, which is easy enough, but you also need to know what sort of chocolate it was and how much was ingested. Unfortunately, edible consumption often involves dogs picking up something a stranger left behind at a park or on the hiking trail, in which case it's hard to answer the last two questions.

by Anonymousreply 24December 29, 2023 1:10 PM

We mentioned the trippy properties of the Eagles Hotel California on its thread. It's mellow and the dog won't understand the lyrics.

by Anonymousreply 25December 29, 2023 1:11 PM

Elderlez, I'm so sorry to hear this and hope your pup has a speedy recovery. ❤️

by Anonymousreply 26December 29, 2023 1:24 PM

There’s a vital documentary you must watch on the subject called Ruffer Madness

by Anonymousreply 27December 29, 2023 1:47 PM

It can be really horrible for a dog. Hope the pup recovers soon.

by Anonymousreply 28December 29, 2023 1:50 PM

Oh ElderLez, did this happen to your Cavalier? I am so sorry. Here is pic of my Sammy after his Christmas dinner. So content.

by Anonymousreply 29December 29, 2023 2:06 PM

Does your dog prefer Delta 8 or Delta 9? Indica or Sativa?

by Anonymousreply 30December 29, 2023 2:30 PM

Sammy is so cute! It is our Cavalier Tallulah.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I just spoke to my wife who is home with him now. She tried taking him out again and he finally peed. (we went all together very early this morning so I could carry him in case of collapse, which happened, and he didn’t potty) She also spoke to our regular vet who had her smear honey on his gums to keep his blood sugar up. He’s reviewing the emergency vet notes from last night.

Meryl, you’ll be amused to hear that our neighbor has told her rescue poodle that he’s no longer allowed to be friends with our dog because he’s a “bad influence.” (Also unrelated, but there was a WaPo article yesterday that I think you’d find interesting ICYMI)

by Anonymousreply 31December 29, 2023 2:35 PM

It's actually getting more and more common, now.

by Anonymousreply 32December 29, 2023 5:32 PM

Just play him some Bob Marley and get him some Wendy's. He'll be fine!

by Anonymousreply 33December 29, 2023 5:34 PM

OP It's a dog. I'm sure he or she will be fine.

by Anonymousreply 34December 29, 2023 5:40 PM

My recently-passed pug ingested some pot or an edible the first time I took him to a park to socialize with other dogs when he was a wee puppy. We didn't know what was going on - he couldn't stand, lost consciousness, we thought he was dying. It was scary as hell, and we spent many $$ on him spending the night at the vet, getting fluids and meds (think they gave him a charcoal treatment). The vet said it was touch and go for awhile. We were scared to death. He made it through, but it was by no means a sneeze and it took several days for him to get back to normal.

Extremely scary.

by Anonymousreply 35December 29, 2023 5:55 PM

ElderLez abuses animals.

Wish it was dead.

by Anonymousreply 36December 29, 2023 6:07 PM

Aaaaaaaand block 🤡 🚫

by Anonymousreply 37December 29, 2023 6:09 PM

When I was younger, way before anything was legal, my friends parents would get their dog high by blowing smoke into its ears. The dog would come running whenever they smelled it. He was a smart, great dog, so seemed benign (although stupid, why would anyone want a stoned dog?). My mom had a dog that loved anything alcoholic, and also loved coffee, she lived over 16 years.

I'd be as worried about them getting ahold of edibles as I would any other substance I have bc I have tiny dogs, anything beyond childrens doses are too much.

by Anonymousreply 38December 29, 2023 8:05 PM

As I understand it, THC is toxic for dogs, but CBD formulated without THC can be good for them. I give it to my aged care and it solved a huge meowing issue and seems to have eased some joint pain.

by Anonymousreply 39December 29, 2023 8:09 PM

R39 Who was meowing?

by Anonymousreply 40December 29, 2023 8:10 PM

Aged cat* (fucking phone)

by Anonymousreply 41December 29, 2023 8:19 PM

He’s still sleepy and a little wobbly, but he’s much improved and back to eating as of tonight. Our regular vet gave him an injection of water this afternoon and confirmed the emergency vet’s diagnosis that it wasn’t a stroke and that his overall health is good. He did say the blood pressure medicine ingestion has similar symptoms and he can’t rule that out:

However, he refuses to drink water. He acts like we are trying to poison him when we suggest it. R35, did your Pug do that?

by Anonymousreply 42December 30, 2023 12:37 AM

r42 it's been so long (14 years) i really can't recall. i have a vague recollection that it did seem to take a long time for him to care about eating or drinking...but it really was at least 3 days (from point of ingestion) until he seemed like he was even close to being back to "normal" dog behavior. My dog was VERY small at the time, so the amount he ingested (we never saw it happen, nor did we know what was going on until we took him in to the vet) was probably A LOT for his teeny body.

We didn't smoke or take edibles, so this was a very random thing that happened. In a park in San Francisco, of course!!

by Anonymousreply 43December 30, 2023 12:44 AM

Try putting some honey in the dogs water, I have small dogs who I do that with so their blood sugar doesn't get funky when they're playing like maniacs (or after a vomiting episode, just enough to entice, some chicken stock also works to entice them to drink a bit more too, but I use the low sodium stuff bc there's a ton of salt in the regular stock)

by Anonymousreply 44December 30, 2023 1:20 AM

Who is his dealer?

by Anonymousreply 45December 30, 2023 1:40 AM

ElderLez, your dog is a gay drug whore.

by Anonymousreply 46December 30, 2023 2:06 AM

We’re in the countryside. Our off leash dog apparently licked (nibbled, walked through?) a large patch of mushrooms just after sunset.

Fifteen minutes later he was convulsing on the kitchen floor: front legs stiff; hind legs kicking.

Called nearest 24 hour vet (thirty miles away with hours of “emergency” cases backed up in waiting room). They talked us down from the ceiling; gave advice similar to yours. By midnight he was beginning to mend.

My heart goes out to you and your little one for full recovery.

by Anonymousreply 47December 30, 2023 2:29 AM

Fuck ElderLez and LipstickLez.

They’re both dead.

I love my life.

I never would.

Kill a sentient being.

by Anonymousreply 48December 30, 2023 3:46 AM

Be gone, vomitous filth r48. And so it does.

by Anonymousreply 49December 30, 2023 4:12 AM

try unsalted chicken broth instead of water

by Anonymousreply 50December 30, 2023 4:50 AM

He’s still treating water like poison, but with the honey he did drink a little this morning.

Mushrooms are terrifying! I’d have completely lost it TSR.

R46 I blame my wife and myself for fat and femme shaming the little guy. She’s always telling to butch it up when he lays on his back for stray dogs in the street and I make him weigh in once a week. Who can blame him for turning to drugs?

RC that’s a great suggestion. He can’t have chicken, but I wish we had beef broth in the house.

He seems much more alert this morning.

by Anonymousreply 51December 30, 2023 11:36 AM

That do was still less hairy and voluminous than Demi's cooch shot! Yikes.

by Anonymousreply 52December 30, 2023 5:20 PM

Did it died yet

by Anonymousreply 53December 31, 2023 1:42 AM

Girl, he got it from the house not from the street. Are you kidding me with this shit?

People aren't exactly out there sprinking the streets with THC edibles. You don't even find an errant dog treat in the street, let alone an edible.

If you have THC in the house then the dog got the THC from your house. Come off it already.

by Anonymousreply 54December 31, 2023 1:48 AM

Keep your stash away from him.

by Anonymousreply 55December 31, 2023 2:12 AM

[QUOTE]People aren't exactly out there sprinking the streets with THC edibles. You don't even find an errant dog treat in the street, let alone an edible.

Please tell us more about yourself, r54/55, and your wonderful, award-winning extra-perceptual ability that includes "sniffing out" errant folks who just fucking hate their animals so much they *poison* them!!!

You can get on here to "preach," and satisfy your out-of-this-world sanctimony, but we on Datalounge understand you are the most likely among us to roll into a compact ball and auto-fellate yourself.

by Anonymousreply 56December 31, 2023 2:48 AM

I don't want to read the opening post again because it's another fucking pet thread, but if I recall correctly no mention of how the dog became intoxicated was offered there. Like it was a mystery.

Just how elder is the lez?

by Anonymousreply 57December 31, 2023 3:02 AM

[quote]People aren't exactly out there sprinking the streets with THC edibles. You don't even find an errant dog treat in the street, let alone an edible.

Veterinarians would laugh at this. Some dogs get into their owners' stashes, but discarded joints and edibles are all around us, we just aren't as close to the action as dogs and have duller senses. Then there's this:

[quote]Another unsavory source? Human feces tainted with marijuana. This is, in fact, what we think happened to Maizey, who spent quite a bit of time in the park bushes the morning she got stoned.

[quote]"Dogs love that scent, to them it’s perfume," said Dr. Black.

[quote]Dr. Black and other veterinarians believe this is becoming more common in the Bay Area, as more people are forced to live on the streets.

Elderlez, I'm guessing that your dog weighs maybe 20 pounds, at most.

1/5th or so of an edible might have been OK for the dog. But he pretty much overdosed (by 5X) if he ate an entire human edible.

Poor guy, I feel bad for him. As posted above, he just needs to work this out of his system.

by Anonymousreply 59December 31, 2023 4:42 AM

Thanks R59. He’s actually closer to 30 pounds. 25 pounds would probably be ideal for him, but he’s taller than most cavaliers and would be emaciated at the breed standard of 18 pounds.

R58 yuck! My dog will eat almost anything off the street; plastic, paper, a live wasp, but thank goodness he doesn’t eat shit. He sniffs it delicately and walks on.

He’s seems to be all better this morning; drinking water and demanding to play with his new Christmas toy. If he does the full three mile walk this morning with my wife then we can put this chapter behind us. (He started off strong yesterday, but after a half mile he demanded to head home.)

by Anonymousreply 60December 31, 2023 11:45 AM

I’m glad he’s doing better!

by Anonymousreply 61December 31, 2023 2:31 PM

MURDERER

by Anonymousreply 62January 1, 2024 3:37 PM

Did he do the full three miles, EL?

by Anonymousreply 63January 1, 2024 5:02 PM

Yes, he’s completely better! Three miles yesterday morning and three miles this morning. We actually just got back with him from beach, which he loves, and now he’s taking a well deserved nap; snuggled up next to my wife.

Thank you to all of you who offered advice and words of encouragement. It was very much appreciated.

by Anonymousreply 64January 1, 2024 6:36 PM

Good to hear! You must be relieved.

by Anonymousreply 65January 1, 2024 6:53 PM

So relieved!! My poor baby.

by Anonymousreply 66January 1, 2024 7:01 PM

Can you die, fake lesbian

by Anonymousreply 67January 1, 2024 10:38 PM

Of course we are all going to die R67, so the answer is yes, of course I can. One of my grandmothers lived to 105 though so you may go first. Happy New Year!
