“Voices Carry” (1985) by ‘Til Tuesday- anyone else remember this song?
I used to love this song so much and found the video powerful when I was young. I hated how her upper class Manhattan man wanted to control everything about her, from how she looked to how she acted and what she enjoys doing. I loved when she stands up in Carnegie Hall and sings out. I found it powerful as a kid (I know, lol).
I forgot about them until a few months ago when they popped up on some 80s playlist. I was shocked. I still remember the words to the chorus and enjoyed it just as much as I did as a kid.
Anyone else remember it?
‘Til Tuesday were a Boston band.

Still love this song and I'm a fan of Aimee Mann.

IIRC, the original version had the dominating partner as another woman who was keeping their relationship undercover.

It's a great song. A great 'fuck you' to a controlling, asshole boyfriend.

She’s all hot Grandma now. Shes 63 and looks even better than she did years ago.

I know the keyboard player (Joey Pesci) through friends. He's a lovely guy and still hot.

Fun fact: Aimee Mann has been married for decades (since 1997) to Sean Penn's brother Michael Penn.

R9 Her song Deathly inspired Paul Thomas Anderson to write Magnolia & then he used mostly her songs for the soundtrack.

This song takes me right back to being a teenager playing bass in a band in high school. The mood is so perfect for a closeted gay teen. The mood of this song (as well as the actual song) is also found throughout the movie Atomic Blonde with Charlize Theron.
If only I'd been out at the time to fully feel all the lust and angst and heartbreak that I saw in all of my straight friends. 🤘😝

It’s a fantastic song.
I’ve been a fan of her solo work for decades. She’s one who’s never gotten her due.
Her last album was all songs for a stage musical version of Girl, Interrupted that got derailed by the pandemic. It has some of her best work.
She can be sharply cynical, but on this one she’s mournfully fragile and tentatively hopeful.

I agree wholeheartedly with R1, R8, and R16 — the Magnolia soundtrack is brilliant. I like a lot of her husband’s work too.

It was filmed on a street in the South End of Boston, I lived next door. My roommate sold his apartment recently for over 800K. I remember when the nuns moved out of their Union Park brownstone in the 90’s and it still had all the gas lighting, and the woodwork and trim was in pristine condition.

Try doing a search.

The pandemic must've started in the early 90s when her solo career went nowhere. R18
Also I like her both as a person & an artist but she had stronger material as a lead singer of TT.

I was watching this 1988 live performance of Til Tuesday the other day and was struck by how beautiful Aimee Mann was. I've been a fan of her music but hadn't seen performances from back then until now
