“Voices Carry” (1985) by ‘Til Tuesday- anyone else remember this song?

I used to love this song so much and found the video powerful when I was young. I hated how her upper class Manhattan man wanted to control everything about her, from how she looked to how she acted and what she enjoys doing. I loved when she stands up in Carnegie Hall and sings out. I found it powerful as a kid (I know, lol).

I forgot about them until a few months ago when they popped up on some 80s playlist. I was shocked. I still remember the words to the chorus and enjoyed it just as much as I did as a kid.

Anyone else remember it?

‘Til Tuesday were a Boston band.

Still love this song and I'm a fan of Aimee Mann.

by Anonymousreply 1December 27, 2023 9:53 PM

Of course.

by Anonymousreply 2December 27, 2023 9:55 PM

IIRC, the original version had the dominating partner as another woman who was keeping their relationship undercover.

by Anonymousreply 3December 27, 2023 9:55 PM

It's a great song. A great 'fuck you' to a controlling, asshole boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 4December 27, 2023 10:46 PM

This is the only song I know that Aimee Mann sings.

by Anonymousreply 5December 27, 2023 10:54 PM

It was their only hit song.

by Anonymousreply 6December 27, 2023 10:56 PM

r3 No

She’s all hot Grandma now. Shes 63 and looks even better than she did years ago.

She’s a lovely singer. Some great songs.

by Anonymousreply 9December 27, 2023 11:11 PM

I know the keyboard player (Joey Pesci) through friends. He's a lovely guy and still hot.

by Anonymousreply 10December 27, 2023 11:13 PM

Fun fact: Aimee Mann has been married for decades (since 1997) to Sean Penn's brother Michael Penn.

by Anonymousreply 11December 27, 2023 11:17 PM

The hot asshole died.

by Anonymousreply 12December 27, 2023 11:28 PM

r12 Wow, you're right - did not ever know who he was.

R9 Her song Deathly inspired Paul Thomas Anderson to write Magnolia & then he used mostly her songs for the soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 16December 28, 2023 12:28 AM

This song takes me right back to being a teenager playing bass in a band in high school. The mood is so perfect for a closeted gay teen. The mood of this song (as well as the actual song) is also found throughout the movie Atomic Blonde with Charlize Theron.

If only I'd been out at the time to fully feel all the lust and angst and heartbreak that I saw in all of my straight friends. 🤘😝

It’s a fantastic song.

I’ve been a fan of her solo work for decades. She’s one who’s never gotten her due.

Her last album was all songs for a stage musical version of Girl, Interrupted that got derailed by the pandemic. It has some of her best work.

She can be sharply cynical, but on this one she’s mournfully fragile and tentatively hopeful.

Great song.

by Anonymousreply 21December 28, 2023 8:15 PM

From my hometown. The Magnolia Soundtrack was hauntingly good.

by Anonymousreply 22December 28, 2023 8:32 PM

Wise Up was used in both Magnolia and Jerry McGuire.

I always thought it was “hush hush keep it down now you’re so scary”

by Anonymousreply 24December 28, 2023 9:13 PM

Settling in for the evening huh op? Back to replying to yourself for another night.

by Anonymousreply 25December 28, 2023 9:28 PM

I agree wholeheartedly with R1, R8, and R16 — the Magnolia soundtrack is brilliant. I like a lot of her husband’s work too.

by Anonymousreply 26December 28, 2023 9:28 PM

You go ahead and reply to yourself op since nobody else wants to.

by Anonymousreply 27December 28, 2023 9:30 PM

It was filmed on a street in the South End of Boston, I lived next door. My roommate sold his apartment recently for over 800K. I remember when the nuns moved out of their Union Park brownstone in the 90’s and it still had all the gas lighting, and the woodwork and trim was in pristine condition.

by Anonymousreply 28December 28, 2023 10:38 PM

You ok, r27 / r25?

by Anonymousreply 29December 28, 2023 11:44 PM

Such a great song. Underrated.

by Anonymousreply 30January 22, 2024 5:47 PM

Yes. Plus, there's a Til Tuesday/Aimee Mann post on DL seemingly nearly every month.

by Anonymousreply 31January 22, 2024 5:55 PM

R31 interesting. Post links please. I wanna see Their post dates.

by Anonymousreply 32January 22, 2024 5:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 33January 22, 2024 6:01 PM

R31 still waiting for the links

by Anonymousreply 34January 22, 2024 6:02 PM

I could relate to the lyrics when I was younger and dating closeted guys who wanted to keep our relationship a secret

by Anonymousreply 35January 22, 2024 6:23 PM

R31 where are your links to use as citations?

by Anonymousreply 36January 22, 2024 6:33 PM

I'm SO glad the band's doing well

by Anonymousreply 37January 24, 2024 4:18 AM

R36 I'm not R31 but there are many music threads with at least one A. Mann/ Til T. song popping up on it.

Try doing a search.

by Anonymousreply 39January 24, 2024 7:02 AM

The pandemic must've started in the early 90s when her solo career went nowhere. R18

Also I like her both as a person & an artist but she had stronger material as a lead singer of TT.

by Anonymousreply 40January 24, 2024 7:04 AM

R39 i have. Not many

by Anonymousreply 41January 24, 2024 9:03 AM

I was watching this 1988 live performance of Til Tuesday the other day and was struck by how beautiful Aimee Mann was. I've been a fan of her music but hadn't seen performances from back then until now
