Her performance in "Gloria" is pitch perfect and remains one my favorites of all time.
Shame that Hollywood didn't know what to do with her at least her director husband did!

OP. This is one of my favorite performances of all time as well. And probably My Top 5 favorite film, and A Woman Under The Influence, Opening Night, and Love Streams are in my Top 10.
For a second I had to see if someone bumped and old thread that i started.
My favorite scenes. in Gloria are the restaurant scene, the subway chase, and when Gloria first pulls out her gun and does her thing.
I love the scene with her and the kid in the hotel room-
It's just a PERFECT film and by far the most accessible Cassavetes film.
Gena had charisma for days and was absolutely beautiful.

I watched this tonight because of you. It's free with ads on You Tube. Thanks OP. Saw it years ago. Loved it. Gena Rowlands always delivered a great performance.

Opening Night is a mesmerizing film, running primarily on Gena Rowlands’ anxious, unsettled energy.
She is a fucking gem.
She turned 93 this past summer.

Wonderful actor. A favorite

R3- I suspect that she is "not well" (like many 93 year olds) No more public appearances, ect in about 5 years? I know that one day soon Gena will be gone- and I will truly shed a tear or two. (Mary?)
Anyway, if you want another lovely film? Unhook The Stars.
I will always remember that Gena is SO excited for her next chapter. (See the film!)
and a great song by Cyndi Lauper

I don't think she's underrated. She has received more accolades than most actors do in a lifetime.

She was marvelous in Woody Allen’s Another Woman

I love her voice, and for that alone I will watch her movies….

OP, although I respect your unbridled adoration of GR, you might be interested to know that other, discriminating tastes here at DL disagree...

Her brilliant performance in Requiem for a Dream was gut wrenching and I even loved her in the romcoms Hope Floats and Something to Talk About.

R12- LOL. You got it 1/2. right. ELLEN BURST-YN IS REQUIEM FOR A DREAM!!!!!!

LOLL! Don't feel bad. A journalist I follow on Twitter wanted people to post movies they've watched repeatedly and someone posted a scene from Rear Window, and the journalist went on about how they loved everything Hitchcock and watched all his movies, but that scene from Vertigo was a favorite...it was not from Vertigo. After being corrected they got pissed off and closed the thread. LOL!

She played that slut Adrienne Van Leyden on Peyton Place. She broke up Betty's marriage to Steven Cord.

The scene in Gloria when she takes on those mafia goons and she waves her gun and shouts, "Ya let a woman beat ya? Ya punks!" The way she said "punks!" was priceless. She was always a respected actress, but Gloria made her a sensation. We take it for granted, but there were no women like her, or Ripley from The Alien for that matter.

[quote]Gena Rowlands is the most underrated actor of my generation
So you're saying you're ancient?
That explains the obsessive rambling.

I've seen her in only two movies and loved her in both of them...Unhook the Stars (mentioned above) and Hysterical Blindness. I highly recommend both movies because of her performances.

R18- I am not OP and I have posted 5 times here, I think more than they have . I am 44. Fuck I think Gloria was being shot the summer that I was born.
