What was the point of this movie? Is Bradley Cooper that desperate for an Oscar? Carey Mulligan is 38 years old? They didn’t need to age her at all and she still looks old. What a piece of turd. I want my 2 hours back.
This is worse than Tar

If they really were interested in doing something on Leonard BErnstein why not do a really awesome fantastic documentary? No one can "play" him. He was totally fabulous in his own way. There's so much footage out here of him performing and talking, and you can also get his kids and others to talk about him. This movie was unnecessary.

Oh, good. A ninth thread whining about Maestro. Just what we needed.

Showy acting and even more showy directing, I lasted all of five minutes.

Why isn’t he being cancelled for wearing a prosthetic Jewish nose, like the actress who spoofed Mayim Bialik on SNL?

If you are really interested in a learning who Lenny was let Tom Wolfe tell you.

Fucking hell that was so boring

I watched the first half last night and the second half this morning.
Watching movies on TV really does lessen the experience for me. I imagine Maestro looked amazing on the big screen and the intensity of the music would have been incredible. Tar was a slog in the cinema but an enjoyable experience.
But on a tv screen it's just a bit meh. There was one long shot where Cooper and Mulligan are having a conversation in a room and it's one continuous long shot. You can barely see their faces.
Some great individual scenes but far from a masterpiece.

Oh shit I forgot to watch Tar

He’s completely age inappropriate for the earlier scenes as an up and coming composer. So is Matt Bomer.

Garbage. I'm mad at myself for watching it, against my better BC hating instincts.
And that woman's forced, fake sounding mid-Atlantic accent was like nails on a chalkboard. The one who played the beard whose name I don't care to look up.

Carey's accent was mutant. Felicia was born in Costa Rica and was educated in Latin American schools. Did she ever live in England?
And Leonard doesn't come off good in this either - selfish and very conceited, not to mention dishonest. Flaunting his greasy twink in his wife's face like that...unbelievable.

The transatlantic accent was in America

Heard on radio when Bernstein died, his boyfriend was Black, What do we know about this chap?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 2, 2024 4:58 PM |
Better yet, was he legally of age? LB allegedly had a yen for Latino and black twinks. Later in life anyway.

"Variety" predicts Bradley to win the GG for Best Actor: Drama.
I'll be very surprised if they're right.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 6, 2024 4:24 PM |
I think he will win the GG and even the SAG. Cillian will win Critics Choice and BAFTA. Oscar is between them, unless they cancel each other out and the dark horse of the race (Giamatti) wins.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 6, 2024 4:27 PM |
I think Cillian will sweep.

I liked it.

Yes he was flamboyant, and exuberant and self promoting, etc. but he was also groundbreaking and innovative and what he did with West Side Story change the broadway musical forever. That score was groundbreaking. IMO they didn't tell us enough about why Leonard Bernstein became such a phenomenon. In his way he was every bit as much of a genius as Oppenheimer. I think it missed the mark, and while I didn't dislike it IMO it fell short.

R23, "[T]hey" is Bradley Cooper. You know that, right?
Producer, writer, director, star.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 9, 2024 8:41 PM |
R24, yes I get that, but "they " also includes members of the Bernstein family, (his kids) and Steven Spielberg, among others. Bradley Cooper wasn't free-styling. He had some guidance and some input from others.
