Do you generally have trouble buying gay actors in straight (romantic) roles?

I’m 100% gay and proudly so, very happy for any actor who comes out these days, and I swear there’s no internalized homophobia or whatever, but whenever I see a gay actor in a role that shows or talks about him being sexual/romantic with a woman there’s a disconnect for me. Not a complete break of credibility but I’m always half thinking of this man faking his attraction to a woman. But at the same time can buy more info a straight guy playing a gay guy. And I mean even gay actors who are completely straight passing, not fem or ping at all,.

Certainly this is the mindset of many people who view movies and shows today no matter how progressive they are, and Hollywood knows this and fears losing the money that is otherwise guaranteed. I mean, it’s simply impossible to watch those Rock Hudson movies and not be chuckling at his romantic antics. Yes they’re already very campy but when you have the extra outside knowledge that he was closeted it strains the credibility even more and makes it a joke.

Is it just social conditioning or something, or that there’s relatively so few known gay actors in romantic roles?

I have a little secret for you OP - MOST actors are faking their attraction to their sex scene partner.

But to answer your question, Jonathan Groff in Mindhunter was very convincing going down on his girlfriend in the sex scenes he had with her. I was actually proud of him and said that might be the first time I've seen a gay guy convincingly do that.

OP, your posts are vapid and boring.

For Christa’s sake, get a life.

by Anonymousreply 2December 17, 2023 10:32 PM

R1, very different when you’re faking an attraction to their whole gender and everyone knows it.

by Anonymousreply 3December 17, 2023 10:33 PM

R2, what the fuck is vapid about this? You just don’t like this being asked. And what are my other horrible posts?

by Anonymousreply 4December 17, 2023 10:33 PM

R4. Sorry, I don’t have the time or interest.

by Anonymousreply 5December 17, 2023 10:38 PM

OP you're the reason why Chris Evans is faking a lavender marriage. Much thanks 😒

This will date me back to the Dinasaur Age, but I don't care, it's true.

To a woman, every one of my female relatives SWOONED over Richard Chamberlain's portrayal of Father Ralph De Bricassart (sp) in "The Thorn Birds", especially during his in-bed love scenes with Rachel Ward.

And they all knew beforehand he's Gayer than a Box of Christmas Bows.

He’s got a fine ass too, but at this point the hole is likely a blown-out rosebud.

by Anonymousreply 11December 17, 2023 10:58 PM

Interesting... isn't there a thread on here called "Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan, did they have a thing?".

I can see it.

by Anonymousreply 13December 17, 2023 11:06 PM

Why do people have trouble buying gay actors in straight roles....but not the opposite?

by Anonymousreply 14December 17, 2023 11:46 PM

OP - WTF are you nattering on about?

by Anonymousreply 15December 17, 2023 11:52 PM

From silent films to modern Hallmark fluff, you aren't left with many viewing options if you struggle with this.

Not if I want to pay the rent.

Jake Gyllenhaal has the same smile as my closeted ex.

I remember that movie Jake did with Anne. The advance publicity focused on their supposedly "hot" love scenes. The movie bombed.

R20 and people said a shadow was his first dick leak.

by Anonymousreply 21December 18, 2023 12:25 AM

I believed Travis Kelce as a straight guy for rent in that SNL skit.

by Anonymousreply 22January 26, 2024 2:11 PM

I know what OP is getting at. Perhaps it’s just a reaction that gay viewers have because we know the complete lack of sexual attraction we feel toward women and we protect it on the gay actor? Something insides says “Ew!” If that’s the case, the straight audience would not have the same reaction.

by Anonymousreply 23January 26, 2024 2:16 PM

^project, dammit

by Anonymousreply 24January 26, 2024 2:16 PM

R23 Speak for yourself. I love dicks but I’m not disgusted by women.

by Anonymousreply 25January 26, 2024 2:18 PM

And there has never ever been a straight actor playing in a relationship where there is "no" chemistry with the female lead. Right.

One thing valuable about the "fluidity" of Gen Z and its era... comments like the OP don't sort into a simple "all gay actors are X and all straight actors are Y"

There is chemistry and there is lack of chemistry, and there is the space between OP's ears and there is the rest of the world.

by Anonymousreply 26January 26, 2024 2:32 PM

Did I say “ disgusted by” or was that in your head?

by Anonymousreply 27January 26, 2024 2:32 PM

It’s funny, R1, but when I read this thread’s topic I immediately thought of Jonathan Groff in Mindhunter, but have the opposite opinion. Perhaps it’s because I know he’s gay, but in the scenes where he’s with his girlfriend he struck me as a closeted 80’s gay trying to live the straight life.

I wrote it off that he’s just not that good of an actor (see: “Looking” and “Glee”).

by Anonymousreply 28January 26, 2024 4:46 PM

OP, have you seen Andrew Scott's performance as "Hot Priest" in FLEABAG?
