I loved every minute of Barbie....except for Will Farrell segments that went on way too long.

by Anonymousreply 1December 13, 2023 4:51 PM

Yay for Sterling K. Brown! He is hysterical in American Fiction and looks hot as fuck in it.

by Anonymousreply 2December 13, 2023 5:10 PM

Laughable. And this from the critics, no less.

Passages with zero nods, and All of Us Strangers and Zone of Interest with a single one each. Not a good start to the awards season for any of these movies.

by Anonymousreply 3December 13, 2023 5:16 PM

R2 he was making up for lost time

by Anonymousreply 4December 13, 2023 5:17 PM

R3 Barbie is getting the same treatment Top Gun Maverick got a couple of years ago. It’s being acknowledged for saving the box office. Movies have been flopping left and right and this was a massive hit.

However, this one had some creative merit to it.

All Of Us Strangers was never gonna be a big threat during awards season. I’ve said this over and over. It’s a saccharine, melodramatic story

by Anonymousreply 5December 13, 2023 5:19 PM

[I] All Of Us Strangers was never gonna be a big threat during awards season. I’ve said this over and over. It’s a saccharine, melodramatic story

I would not describe All of Us Strangers as either saccharine or melodramatic (May December is an example of a melodrama). In fact, AOUS’s screenplay consciously resists the kind of treacly nostalgia you’re referring to and confronts the main character’s past head-on without some saccharine lens.

Have you actually seen the film?

In case you needed any more proof that Warner Brothers and the BARBIE DOG SHIT $100,000,000 advertising machine bought off and paid all of Hollywood and the "critics," well here's your proof.

This is what happens when you let MONEY rule your industry, and not actual talent, quality, merit.

Barbie DOG SHIT is the WORST movie of 2023, but the $100,000,000 advertising juggernaut funded by Warner Brothers, will make sure that this completely undeserving pile of DOG SHIT will win every award in 2023.

Congratulations on your MEANINGLESS wins, Barbie. Daddy bought you the Miss America crown!!!

by Anonymousreply 8December 13, 2023 5:52 PM

R6 r7 yes. I ACTUALLY have. Unlike someone. And yes. It’s a saccharine and maudlin story with tons of staring at each other and a ridiculous amount of crying. If it stayed true to the source material and kept it a hetero relationship you all would absolutely hate this film. The only reason you would like it is because it’s gay now.

by Anonymousreply 9December 13, 2023 6:00 PM

Annette Bening just can't catch a break, can she?

by Anonymousreply 10December 13, 2023 6:03 PM

OMG!!! There's money influencing awards in Hollywood!!! OMG!!!

by Anonymousreply 11December 13, 2023 6:07 PM

I'm waiting for Barbie to sweep the Oscars!

by Anonymousreply 12December 13, 2023 6:07 PM

[QUOTE] Unlike someone

Unlike who? I hope you’re not referring to me because I’ve seen it as well. And I don’t agree with your assessment/portrayal of the film.

Ryan Goaling

by Anonymousreply 15December 13, 2023 6:27 PM

You really enjoy sweating the small stuff, don't you, r8?

by Anonymousreply 16December 13, 2023 6:30 PM

Please don't give Leo another award. If all of Hollwood stops sucking up to him and kissing his ass, maybe he'll finally start *acting* again instead of mugging his way through his performances.

by Anonymousreply 17December 13, 2023 6:30 PM

I’m so proud of Julianne Moore. I don’t know why I care but I feel like I know her and I like to see her succeed.

by Anonymousreply 18December 13, 2023 6:30 PM

R8, you are a psycho. You posted hundreds and hundreds of posts in the Barbie threads this summer. Get some help. You need it.

by Anonymousreply 19December 13, 2023 6:45 PM

Yeah no Timmy or Wonka in any of the above the line categories!

by Anonymousreply 20December 13, 2023 6:49 PM

Wonka received 1 or 2 nominations I think but of course not in the acting categories. No one was expecting that

by Anonymousreply 21December 13, 2023 6:50 PM

I just skipped through this on my computer and have no interest in seeing the whole thing. Maybe you have to see it on the big screen and not have read anything about it. Maybe you have to give a shit about Barbie. Maybe you have to be a millennial. Maybe you have to enjoy sitcom tropes punctuated by off-the-wall comments about vaginas and death. I am dumbstruck by Ryan Gosling's embrace of complete and utter humiliation. Also, feminism without a critique of capitalism, and boy does this movie wrap its arm around merching, is just bullshit.

Greta Gerwig is not a good filmmaker.

by Anonymousreply 22December 18, 2023 11:58 PM

I finally watched it last night on HBO/Max. It was cute, pretty funny at times ("I'm gonna beach you off"), but not serious as an award contender. It might get awards for set/production design, and I'm afraid Billie Eilish is going to be a lock for best song, but nobody's gonna win for acting, writing, directing.

by Anonymousreply 23December 19, 2023 12:11 AM

are foreign films disqualified?

by Anonymousreply 24December 19, 2023 12:16 AM

The humor in this film is that Barbie looks like a bimbo but has been innoculated from acting like a hot chick. This is probably the story of Gerwig's life.

by Anonymousreply 25December 19, 2023 12:20 AM

You know those theaters with the heated/cooled seats that recline a lot? And they bring the food right to ya?

Barbie bored me so much I fell into a deep slumber and had to be awakened when it was over.

by Anonymousreply 26December 19, 2023 12:30 AM

BARBIE DOG SHIT EATS CUNT!!!!

ADVERTISING $100 MILLION WHORES!!!

by Anonymousreply 28December 19, 2023 12:39 AM

I loved this movie! Jacob should have been Ken though.

by Anonymousreply 29December 19, 2023 12:39 AM

I tried watching it but quickly turned it off. It was a trend.

by Anonymousreply 30December 19, 2023 12:42 AM

[quote] Jacob should have been Ken though.

Was there a Big Black Abdomen Mole Ken?

by Anonymousreply 31December 19, 2023 12:45 AM

In other news, Jodie Foster in Supporting for Nyad? Isn't she the title character? I haven't looked it up and maybe she isn't, but... I'm fairly sure she must be.

by Anonymousreply 32December 19, 2023 12:46 AM

R32 here please forgive me. I was incorrect. Annette Bening (not nominated) is Diana Nyad.

by Anonymousreply 33December 19, 2023 12:49 AM

Anybody hate "Poor Things" as much as I did? If you can't stand Emma Stone and her irritating voice, you'll really hate this movie. Great review (ie., one that conforms to my opinion) by Mick LaSalle, SF movie maven.

And, Barbie was fabulous, for us young (70) girls who grew up with that girl. Very fun and uplifting for the terrified and battered female in all of us.

Do women really take strength from having a boob like Will Ferrell play the face of the male establishment? Poor dear. You must really be beaten down.

by Anonymousreply 35December 19, 2023 4:55 AM

Can't believe Gold Derby predicts Bradley Cooper for CC Best Actor.

by Anonymousreply 36January 12, 2024 1:18 PM

Everything about Barbies box office can be said about Oppenheimer, which was a more difficult sell and didn't have the wall to wall media blitz.

by Anonymousreply 37January 12, 2024 2:43 PM

And was R rated and a historical film. Barbie was PG-13 and about a doll.

by Anonymousreply 38January 12, 2024 2:45 PM

Not merely "about a doll," r38; about nostalgia and bringing those fun-filled memories to the now-adult Barbie owners' current time.

And then just going for it, with not only a Pepto-Bismol Movie World but also with tie-ins to HGTV; NYX Cosmetics; Mattel movie "action figures" and Hot Wheels pink Corvettes; and so on.

One would be hard-pressed to think of a fun tie-in to "Oppenheimer"! 🤯

[Note: There actually is one to "The Holdovers": Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations." 😁]
