by Anonymousreply 146December 15, 2023 5:14 AM

Wow

by Anonymousreply 1December 13, 2023 12:46 AM

RIP AB

by Anonymousreply 2December 13, 2023 12:48 AM

This is terrible. Way too young.

Really enjoyed him on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

He had decades of good performances to give.

by Anonymousreply 3December 13, 2023 12:48 AM

That's awfully sad. RIP, Andre/

by Anonymousreply 4December 13, 2023 12:49 AM

Has Andy Samberg commented yet?

by Anonymousreply 5December 13, 2023 12:49 AM

That's unexpected. 61 is young. It said short illness, so I wonder what happened so quickly.

by Anonymousreply 6December 13, 2023 12:50 AM

Surprising and sad. He was wonderful in every role I’d seen him in.

by Anonymousreply 7December 13, 2023 12:50 AM

Who?

by Anonymousreply 8December 13, 2023 12:50 AM

Oh NO. Fucking hell, that's far too young. What a damn shame.

by Anonymousreply 9December 13, 2023 12:55 AM

That obit didn't mention any private life at all.

by Anonymousreply 10December 13, 2023 12:56 AM

wow, I loved all of the characters he played, he brought a gravitas to each of them.

by Anonymousreply 11December 13, 2023 12:56 AM

Million dollar smile. Poor man. Was it covid?

by Anonymousreply 12December 13, 2023 12:56 AM

[quote]That obit didn't mention any private life at all.

It mentioned his family.

[quote]He won an Emmy for that show he starred in from 1992-98 and Homicide is also where he met his wife, actress Ami Brabson. Along with her, Braugher leaves behind sons Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley, as well as his brother Charles Jennings and his mother Sally Braugher.

by Anonymousreply 13December 13, 2023 12:57 AM

Eesh. My mistake. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 14December 13, 2023 12:59 AM

He could be very funny.

This one made me gasp out loud. Awful, awful news.

Here is a clip reel of Captain Holt’s best moments:

Actually, this is the reel.

R12. He had a beautiful smile. Damn all over again.

by Anonymousreply 18December 13, 2023 1:01 AM

OMG. What the fuck happened?

by Anonymousreply 19December 13, 2023 1:01 AM

Oh, 😢.

by Anonymousreply 20December 13, 2023 1:01 AM

One of the greatest in TV history. What an untimely loss.

Loved his turn on The Good Fight last year.

by Anonymousreply 21December 13, 2023 1:02 AM

Great actor. Probably the best thing about Homicide--the episodes that revolved around him were always the best. His wife also is an actress, but never as high profile as him. Very sad.

by Anonymousreply 23December 13, 2023 1:04 AM

Ugh, very sad. He was great.

by Anonymousreply 24December 13, 2023 1:05 AM

Wow, I really liked him in all the various roles.

by Anonymousreply 25December 13, 2023 1:05 AM

Omg, no!

by Anonymousreply 26December 13, 2023 1:08 AM

This is not right. No. He was so good in everything I have seen him in. Not right. Too young.

by Anonymousreply 27December 13, 2023 1:08 AM

RIP, Frank.

by Anonymousreply 28December 13, 2023 1:09 AM

I gasped. He was so funny in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

by Anonymousreply 29December 13, 2023 1:09 AM

I just started rewatching Brooklyn Nine-Nine and was finally going to commit to seeing it all the way through (usually gave up around season 5). This is so sad.

by Anonymousreply 30December 13, 2023 1:10 AM

He was so great in Homicide!! I remember he suffered a stroke years ago, and I was so glad that he recovered and resumed acting. What a great loss.

by Anonymousreply 31December 13, 2023 1:11 AM

I really liked that show he did with Ray Romano and Scott Bakula, Men of a Certain Age

by Anonymousreply 32December 13, 2023 1:12 AM

I worked with him years ago and he smoked constantly. Great guy, brilliant actor, but didn't strike me as the healthiest person (and this was at least 25 years ago).

by Anonymousreply 33December 13, 2023 1:15 AM

What?? Damn this one hurts. He was an amazing actor but I loved him most in Brooklyn Nine Nine. He was great in everything, though.

by Anonymousreply 34December 13, 2023 1:17 AM

Lo R8.

You beat me to it!

by Anonymousreply 35December 13, 2023 1:21 AM

I had no idea he was 61. I thought he was in his 50s back when Homocide was on the air.

by Anonymousreply 36December 13, 2023 1:23 AM

Oh my goodness. I liked him. Good, solid actor. Too young to die these days.

by Anonymousreply 37December 13, 2023 1:23 AM

"Glory" is the first time I saw Braugher.

Great performance, great movie.

by Anonymousreply 38December 13, 2023 1:24 AM

[quote] I worked with him years ago and he smoked constantly. Great guy, brilliant actor, but didn't strike me as the healthiest person (and this was at least 25 years ago).

His chain-smoking was indeed notorious. Tom Fontana once said in an interview that Braugher stopped in real-life around the time they decided to write a stroke storyline for Pembleton. In 2014, the New York Times wrote of Braugher:

[quote]About his personal life, he would only say that there had been “stumbling blocks.” (Braugher stopped drinking alcohol and smoking years ago.) “I won’t go into details, but I have not always been at the top of my game, and that has a cost.”

by Anonymousreply 39December 13, 2023 1:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 40December 13, 2023 1:26 AM

Covid?

by Anonymousreply 41December 13, 2023 1:26 AM

Man this sucks. He was a great actor.

by Anonymousreply 42December 13, 2023 1:31 AM

WTF Deadline. Odd photo for an obit. He looks as if he's happy he kicked off. RIP and condolences to his wife, his sons, his brother and his mom.

First Ryan now Andre. Who will be the third?

by Anonymousreply 43December 13, 2023 1:36 AM

Ryan who, R43?

by Anonymousreply 44December 13, 2023 1:44 AM

Oh no! I loved him on Homicide. Great actor.

by Anonymousreply 45December 13, 2023 1:48 AM

Irene R44

by Anonymousreply 46December 13, 2023 1:49 AM

R31 did HE suffer a stroke? I thought it was just his character that did

by Anonymousreply 47December 13, 2023 1:50 AM

I loved him as the captain in Poseidon.

by Anonymousreply 48December 13, 2023 1:53 AM

R44, Ryan O'Neal.

by Anonymousreply 49December 13, 2023 1:53 AM

Beautiful and talented. RIP, sir.

by Anonymousreply 50December 13, 2023 1:58 AM

[quote] WTF Deadline. Odd photo for an obit. He looks as if he's happy he kicked off.

Yes R43, all obit photos must either be of the deceased in a grim-faced pose, or preferably one taken in the moment after death. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 51December 13, 2023 2:01 AM

He lived in South Orange NJ, I once was out to dinner there and saw him and his wife eating at the same restaurant. Didn't try to talk to them or anything. Seemed like a nice guy and was a talented performer.

by Anonymousreply 52December 13, 2023 2:02 AM

Oh, no!

I loved him as Captain Sisko in Star Trek Deep Space 9.

RIP 🙏 👽

by Anonymousreply 59December 13, 2023 2:57 AM

RIP. And right before the holidays. Sad for his family.

by Anonymousreply 60December 13, 2023 3:01 AM

What a loss. One of the best actors of his generation. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 61December 13, 2023 3:15 AM

I desperately wish Homicide was available to stream.

by Anonymousreply 62December 13, 2023 3:18 AM

Why couldn't it have been Will Smith???

WHY?????????

by Anonymousreply 63December 13, 2023 3:25 AM

Homicide is not on Peacock.

That is ridiculous. NBC co-owned the show.

by Anonymousreply 64December 13, 2023 3:32 AM

Sure R51 and let's have the person who gives his eulogy dress in a clown suit and juggle bowling pins while the mourners pass by the casket.

It's a jarring photo for an obit. It doesn't fit the occasion namely a death notice.

by Anonymousreply 65December 13, 2023 3:40 AM

[quote]His wife also is an actress, but never as high profile as him. Very sad.

She was a judge on more than 20 episodes in the L&O franchise. She was also on "Homicide" quite often.

by Anonymousreply 66December 13, 2023 3:40 AM

RIP. One of the best. I’m rarely bothered by celebrity deaths, but this one hurts.

by Anonymousreply 67December 13, 2023 3:42 AM

This took me by surprise and saddens me greatly. He was fantastic in every role.

by Anonymousreply 68December 13, 2023 3:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 69December 13, 2023 3:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 72December 13, 2023 3:57 AM

He was an Oscar-worthy talent. How sad that he settled for a sitcom and his time ran out.

by Anonymousreply 73December 13, 2023 4:01 AM

Good movie roles don't grow on trees r73, they are tough to come by. And the reality is that sitcom made a lot more money for him and his family than an awards bait indie movie would have.

by Anonymousreply 74December 13, 2023 4:05 AM

Brooklyn Nine-Nine wasn't some trash sitcom. It was done by producers of The Office and creators of Parks & Rec and The Good Place—arguably the best production company in TV comedy at the time.

by Anonymousreply 75December 13, 2023 4:09 AM

Uh-huh, r70.

r73, but his sitcom was actually good. Love that show

by Anonymousreply 79December 13, 2023 4:20 AM

Tremendous actor. I just finished the final season of "The Good Fight" and he was fantastic. 61 is much too young

by Anonymousreply 80December 13, 2023 4:31 AM

What the actual fuck, God/Satan? You couldn't take Trump or Giuliani? What a loss. He was a great actor, wonderful performances.

by Anonymousreply 81December 13, 2023 4:34 AM

Thats, in 2023, crazy young.

All of these relatively and more than relatively young deaths among celebs and athletes are giving me ... pause

by Anonymousreply 82December 13, 2023 4:34 AM

What relatively young deaths? For every person dying young there's someone living to 100+ like Norman Lear or Olivia de Havilland

by Anonymousreply 83December 13, 2023 4:37 AM

He did not seem particularly heterosexual in spite of having a wife.

by Anonymousreply 84December 13, 2023 4:38 AM

Tonight we remember the career of Andre the Giant. Lark Voorhees, what are your favorite memories of Andre Braugher?

by Anonymousreply 85December 13, 2023 5:07 AM

You’re a junkie, R69. Take your chem-sexin’ fat ass out of this sacred man’s thread.

by Anonymousreply 86December 13, 2023 5:43 AM

R86 Who the fuck you think you are talking 2. Stay off me bitch. Broke ass.

by Anonymousreply 87December 13, 2023 7:31 AM

R73, many consider that sitcom to be the best in recent years. It should have won multiple Emmys, it was that good. And Andre was fantastic in it.

by Anonymousreply 88December 13, 2023 10:42 AM

lol, r85.

by Anonymousreply 89December 13, 2023 12:26 PM

Andre Braugher, Lance Reddick. We lost them both in the same year. Always looked forward to seeing them, they made every production better.

by Anonymousreply 90December 13, 2023 12:55 PM

What a beautiful smile he had.

by Anonymousreply 91December 13, 2023 1:08 PM

Some people are so critical. Andre Baugher had a wonder Hollywood career; one that most could only dream. From Glory to Brooklyn 99. He actually had the acting chops of Denzel without the beauty and facial symmetry. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 92December 13, 2023 1:16 PM

jesus!!

Terrible news. I enjoyed him so very much in Homicide, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and of course in The Good Fight. He was fantastic, the kind of actor that would make you watch any film or series, because HE's in it.

He was also a wonderful ally, a strong voice so much-needed..

Rest in peace, Andre.

by Anonymousreply 93December 13, 2023 1:22 PM

R53 is Rose Nyland.

by Anonymousreply 94December 13, 2023 1:31 PM

The old brief/short illness strikes again

by Anonymousreply 95December 13, 2023 1:42 PM

R92: If anything, a more commanding presence than Denzel. Not a matinee idol, but someone who had a solid career. Ossie Davis would be a better comparison.

by Anonymousreply 96December 13, 2023 1:52 PM

He lived.

He took up space.

He chewed the scenery.

by Anonymousreply 97December 13, 2023 1:55 PM

What a loss.

by Anonymousreply 98December 13, 2023 2:10 PM

He was an actor. He will be remembered.

by Anonymousreply 99December 13, 2023 2:20 PM

B99 was a crap show.

by Anonymousreply 100December 13, 2023 2:47 PM

To me this loss is more devastating than Denzel's will be. Andre Braugher was equally comfortable and adept doing comedy or Shakespeare, and for eight years he played a gay character, imbuing him with all of the heart, humor, intelligence, and respect that anyone could ever ask for. That certainly can't be said of self-important Denzel.

by Anonymousreply 101December 13, 2023 2:49 PM

Denzel Washington is a very talented dramatic actor, but yes he can't quite do comedy naturally. Its not who he is.

by Anonymousreply 102December 13, 2023 3:12 PM

Nope, R102, it most definitely is not who he is.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 103December 13, 2023 3:18 PM

Very sad to hear. Andre Braugher was among my favorite actors today. I knew he had health problems much earlier, I believe it was a stroke, but I thought he was healthy and doing fine in recent years. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 104December 13, 2023 4:05 PM

R102 You know it just dawned on me. Denzel has never done a comedy. I guess Preachers Wife which is a romantic comedy.

by Anonymousreply 105December 13, 2023 5:35 PM

r105 You are mistaken.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 106December 13, 2023 5:54 PM

Denzel is a fucking miserable asshole.

Braugher was loved by costars and audiences alike. A very sad loss.

by Anonymousreply 107December 13, 2023 5:56 PM

I was so sad to learn about this. He was a brilliant actor sadly underused. I wish I had seen him do live theater. The Public posted a wonderful piece on Instagram about himm. He was made to do Shakespeare.

Homicide:Life on the Street, a great cop show, was enriched by his performances.

Yes, 61 is way to young.

by Anonymousreply 108December 13, 2023 5:59 PM

[quote] 61 is way to young.

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 109December 13, 2023 6:01 PM

FINE, R109, Sixty-one is way TOO young.

by Anonymousreply 110December 13, 2023 7:07 PM

[quote]He was a brilliant actor sadly underused.

How can you call the actor who played Frank Pembleton, and then went on to work steadily for the rest of his life underused (sadly or otherwise)? Pembleton is my favorite character in the history of television, at least of that I've watched. And Pembleton would not have been Pembleton if played by anyone other than Andre Braugher.

Your post is sadly underthought.

by Anonymousreply 111December 13, 2023 7:11 PM

Blacks always die early. They always die of complications from things like uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, HIV infection that are easily prevented / managed with appropriate medical care and lifestyle changes.

by Anonymousreply 112December 13, 2023 7:40 PM

I have Homicide LotS downloaded, I am going to binge rewatch it.

by Anonymousreply 113December 13, 2023 7:41 PM

You're lucky, rescue chick. I can't believe it's not available for streaming. Maybe NBC will take note of all the grumbling about this and put it out there.

by Anonymousreply 114December 13, 2023 8:24 PM

R106 Oh snap. I forgot allllll about that film. Omg thank you for posting.

by Anonymousreply 115December 13, 2023 8:32 PM

I still have my Homicide DVDs that I bought over a decade ago.

Love that show

by Anonymousreply 116December 13, 2023 8:38 PM

I loved him as Frank Pembleton. I loved that whole series mainly because of him. You couldn't take his eyes off of him.. But when I said "sadly underused, " he should have had a fantastic career playing roles similar to the level Denzel performed. He did a lot of theater work. I wish I could have seen him in a play. Especially Shakespeare. I think his talent was right up there with Denzel, James Earl Jones, etc. I wanted better roles for him. Pembleton showed us his range and his talent. I wanted more of that. That's what I meant. He was a major talent IMO.

by Anonymousreply 117December 13, 2023 8:53 PM

R122 I remember. That’s what made SVU even more campy. The dramatic gravitas of its guest stars with such over the top plot twists. Love it.

by Anonymousreply 133December 14, 2023 2:05 AM

This saddens me. I loved the "Men of a Certain Age" series, mainly because of Mr. Braugher's character. He seemed to me one of those performers who just elevate any production a notch or two. Another who comes to mind immediately is Laura Linney.

by Anonymousreply 134December 14, 2023 2:07 AM

R127 and R128: Following other posters around DL just to harass them is childish and quite tiresome for the rest of us. Please stop.

by Anonymousreply 135December 14, 2023 3:57 PM

Very handsome man.

by Anonymousreply 136December 14, 2023 4:13 PM

Damn I’m still sad about this. I just watched a bunch of highlight reels and he really was an extraordinary actor. And seemed to be a great guy too. Seriously, how does this happen, when people like Kissinger, Dump, McConnell, etc., seem to love forever. Or at least to very old ages.

by Anonymousreply 137December 14, 2023 4:27 PM

The only celebrity death that has bothered me this much is Warren Zevon's in 2003. Homicide is the very best TV show that ever lived. I know Pembleton was a fan of Bruce Springsteen. I wonder whether he liked Warren.

by Anonymousreply 138December 14, 2023 4:32 PM
