The Best Evita

Julie Covington was the first to sing the role for the concept album. Elaine was the first to perform it live.

I added the Julie videos just for the hell of it. She didn’t actually perform the role like the others.

by Anonymousreply 6December 12, 2023 11:41 PM

Julie. I wish she had played the role on stage but, according to Wikipedia,,,,

Speaking in 1985, Covington expressed some regret at this decision, but explained that she did not like Eva Perón and that without some positive feeling for the person she preferred to turn the role down.

Madonna sings. P. Lupone yells. I vote for Madonna. That was magnificent.

by Anonymousreply 8December 12, 2023 11:55 PM

Julie Covington sang the role in a very different style from all the others, reflecting the more rock-opera style of the EVITA concept album, and her performance was excellent and equally valid as the others on its own terms.

Patti LuPone was superb in the stage version, and there were some other women who did a fine job in the role on Broadway, including Loni Ackerman and Derin Altay. (I'm told Terri Klausner was also very good, but I didn't see her in the show.)

Elaine Paige is a great artist, but I find her performance on the London cast album disappointing. And although Madonna did a fairly good job of singing and acting the role as judged by her own standards, she couldn't hold a candle to any of the others. (I sure hope R8"s comment was in jest.)

P.S. Another great Evita is/was Paloma San Basilio on the Spanish language recording.

Madonna even being mentioned in the same company as LuPone, Paige, even Covington is hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 10December 13, 2023 12:08 AM

They lowered the register to nothing in order for Madonna to sing it.

by Anonymousreply 11December 13, 2023 12:10 AM

I seem to recall Bonnie Franklin was in conversation for an early attempt at turning the musical into a film in the early 1980s when she was at the height of her fame and that there was a demo of her singing this and Stand back Buenos Aires, but they seem to have disappeared.

by Anonymousreply 12December 13, 2023 12:11 AM

R12. They disappeared along with Liza's screen test.

by Anonymousreply 13December 13, 2023 12:15 AM

R12. Olivia recorded don’t cry for etc because for a hot sec they wanted her in the movie. I believe Meryl was talked of ifor the movie

by Anonymousreply 14December 13, 2023 12:17 AM

I've only seen Madonna and I think she did a fine job. Meryl was rumored for a while, when there was another director, but I don't see it. And Lapone would seem wrong for the scenes when she has to show some vulnerability.

by Anonymousreply 15December 13, 2023 12:24 AM

Although Olivia would have been all wrong for the role of Evita in terms of type and from an acting standpoint, her recording of "Argentina" is excellent as a stand-alone pop recording.

Madonna hands down.

I can’t listen to the other versions of Evita, they’re too shrill and shouty.

And Madonna was beautiful for Evita.

The rest could play sick Eva Peron. She literally looked like Patti when she was dying of cancer.

But Madonna captured the beauty of Eva in my opinion and it made her more watchable.

R17 I think I’m too young to understand this and I’m 36.

She sounds like someone’s drunk Aunt.

I understand she had to project in the theater but I dunno, it’s so unpleasant to me.

Michele Pfeiffer was also considered.

Assuming you're serious, R18, you seem to have no knowledge and/or taste at all when it comes to music and singing. First of all, the keys of several of the songs in EVITA had to be brought down for Madonna to be able to sing them. That's not a crime in itself, but even after the transpositions, her voice sounds very thin in some of the higher passages. And on top of all that, she takes weird pauses for rests throughout the score, whether because of poor breath control and/or bad instincts in terms of phrasing.

by Anonymousreply 24December 13, 2023 1:18 AM

My only (small) complaint about Madonna is that she can’t sing.
