I bought blueberries today at Trader Joe’s an they are HUMONGOUS! When will this blueberry inflation end? Are all fruits getting bigger?
Blueberries are getting too big!

I have been getting the jumbo blueberries the last week are so and they have been GREAT! Tart and very favorable... most blueberries nowadays are bland and disgusting

by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 11, 2023 11:01 PM |
I much prefer the bigger blueberries. They are more sweeter and more flavorful that regular blueberries.
They don't necessarily have to be jumbo berries, but as a general rule, the bigger and plumper berries have more flavor.

They are called Frankenfoods. The taste and size are genetically changed. I prefer to stick with the originals.

Get the regular-sized frozen packaged berries—they’re delicious, don’t spoil, aren’t overly sweet, help to cool down stuff like hot oatmeal, make great smoothies, and are like little round frozen treats with each bite. The smaller packaged frozen wild blues, too.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 12, 2023 12:06 AM |
The growers are over fertilizing their crops. And when they get that big they have very little taste. I get about 4 gallons of berries from my bushes every season and they're plump, but not ready to pop. I also put Epson salt (to increase the sweetness) around my bushes every year along with a good 10-10-10 fertilizer.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 12, 2023 12:24 AM |
Frozen blueberries are awful. They have tough skins and the insides are tasteless and mushy. I hate it when I buy so called fresh blueberries and I can tell they’ve been frozen. It destroys their texture.

Yeah. What's the big deal? I bought two. I ate one, and it was so cellulose-y, I threw the other one away. Apples have become as bad as tomatoes and peaches.

by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 12, 2023 2:25 PM |
When they're big like that, they're likely coming from Mexico and/or China and you all know what that means: poo-poo fertilizer. Seriously, unless they have a USDA Organic seal on the container, stay clear of them.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 12, 2023 2:29 PM |
Poo poo IS organic.

The vast majority of produce you buy in a grocery store comes from outside the US. Much of it comes from Central America, and then there's all the stuff that comes from China. By the time it hits the shelves in the US it's already weeks old and much of it is already in the active rotting process, especially in the winter months. Best thing to do is to check any produce that has a high water content for areas that are softer than the rest of it before you buy it. Those items rot much faster than low water vegetables, like carrots, cabbage, broccoli & cauliflower. Cucumbers in grocery stores are the world's worst for being rotten on the shelves.

Contrary to R36, I'm not sure a lot of fresh produce comes from China except maybe for specialty stores like urban Asian markets. The U.S. keeps tariffs on many Chinese food products and the American consumer generally doesn't trust stuff from China, especially fresh food items. Also, it's just too far away to keep most things "fresh" without there being eventual news of them being chemically saturated etc.. I could be wrong and there could be more Chinese items in the produce section than I know so I'll have to check when I go to the store tomorrow.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 13, 2023 4:27 PM |

Something like this was done a couple of decades ago to jalapeños. They look like were crossed with something larger, bell peppers, I think, and Walmart suppliers now generally carry the larger jalapeños. They're not as hot an flavorful as the smaller ones, which are now harder to find.
Maybe the blueberries are being altered.

Please forgive the speech to text errors in R50.
R38 Honey crisp are becoming more common because growers can make a higher profit. They are a more challenging variety to grow, compared to the others. These trees require extra care to prevent disease. The honey crisp apple has a thin skin which is easily damaged. Each apple picked has to have the stem snipped to prevent damage to the other apples. They are only worth growing if the grower can get a high price. If the price drops too low, growers will move on to grow another variety.

Blueberry grown in Australia breaks record as world’s heaviest
A giant blueberry that tips the scales at a whopping 20.4 grams (0.71 ounces) officially entered the record books this week.
The fruit was picked on November 13 and the record for heaviest blueberry was confirmed this week, a spokesperson for Guinness World Records told CNN on Friday.
The record-breaking berry measured 39.31 millimeters (1.55 inches) across, roughly the same size as a table tennis ball. It was grown in Corindi, New South Wales, Australia, by staff at blueberry grower Costa Group.

I haven’t seen Braeburns in a few years. Why farmers aren’t raising these most delicious apples in the world confounds me.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | March 16, 2024 9:05 AM |
I think why growers have gravitated towards larger blueberries is the issue of spoilage. Fruit decays from the outside in through bruises and wounds that allow molds in. Larger individual fruits have less surface than a similar mass of smaller fruits, so are less likely to spoil as quickly. More surface area also speeds the loss of water and quality loss.

by Anonymous | reply 96 | March 16, 2024 5:49 PM |
R96 "Why can’t I find Braeburn Apples anymore?
In today’s fast-paced apple world this sweet-tart, spicy maverick may at long last be obsolete. Lacking the consistency of modern apples, and suffering from difficulties like Braeburn Browning Disorder due to higher internal carbon dioxide concentrations, enterprising breeders began looking for Braeburn descendants that could replace its parent (and be trademarked for profit of course). And so, the ungrateful children of the Braeburn: Envy, Jazz, Sweetie, and Kanzi are sweeping this trailblazing old-timer into oblivion, leaving no room on the grocery store shelf for the apple to whom they owe so much."
