Blueberries are getting too big!

I bought blueberries today at Trader Joe’s an they are HUMONGOUS! When will this blueberry inflation end? Are all fruits getting bigger?

by Anonymousreply 103March 17, 2024 8:01 PM

I have been getting the jumbo blueberries the last week are so and they have been GREAT! Tart and very favorable... most blueberries nowadays are bland and disgusting

by Anonymousreply 1December 11, 2023 10:54 PM

Big Fruits scare me

by Anonymousreply 2December 11, 2023 10:54 PM

Keep R2 away from the bear bar!

by Anonymousreply 3December 11, 2023 10:56 PM

R1 are you having a sugar high?

by Anonymousreply 4December 11, 2023 10:58 PM

Buy wild ones. They're smaller and sweeter.

by Anonymousreply 5December 11, 2023 10:58 PM

OP, just be grateful it's just the blueberries, and not you!

They grow them near nuclear power plants.

by Anonymousreply 7December 11, 2023 10:59 PM

I hate the big blueberries that are soft and mealy. I do love a crisp juicy blueberry.

by Anonymousreply 8December 11, 2023 11:00 PM

Where can you get them R5? And how do you avoid the Fox Tapeworm?

I much prefer the bigger blueberries. They are more sweeter and more flavorful that regular blueberries.

They don't necessarily have to be jumbo berries, but as a general rule, the bigger and plumper berries have more flavor.

by Anonymousreply 10December 11, 2023 11:01 PM

[quote]They are more sweeter and more flavorful t

I'll Oh, Dear myself here.

by Anonymousreply 11December 11, 2023 11:02 PM

I truly sympathise with you, OP

by Anonymousreply 12December 11, 2023 11:07 PM

They are called Frankenfoods. The taste and size are genetically changed. I prefer to stick with the originals.

by Anonymousreply 13December 11, 2023 11:21 PM

The big ones also tend mealy quickly. ALDI blueberries can be surprisingly good.

by Anonymousreply 14December 11, 2023 11:23 PM

R12 The mud pies in my village have gotten bigger too. Tomorrow we are attending a demonstration for climate change. Free peanuts.

Get the regular-sized frozen packaged berries—they’re delicious, don’t spoil, aren’t overly sweet, help to cool down stuff like hot oatmeal, make great smoothies, and are like little round frozen treats with each bite. The smaller packaged frozen wild blues, too.

by Anonymousreply 18December 12, 2023 12:06 AM

The growers are over fertilizing their crops. And when they get that big they have very little taste. I get about 4 gallons of berries from my bushes every season and they're plump, but not ready to pop. I also put Epson salt (to increase the sweetness) around my bushes every year along with a good 10-10-10 fertilizer.

by Anonymousreply 19December 12, 2023 12:24 AM

Frozen blueberries are awful. They have tough skins and the insides are tasteless and mushy. I hate it when I buy so called fresh blueberries and I can tell they’ve been frozen. It destroys their texture.

by Anonymousreply 20December 12, 2023 12:28 AM

Gasoline is under $3.00/gallon where I live. I know the Deplorables are gnashing their teeth in rage.

by Anonymousreply 21December 12, 2023 12:32 AM

[quote] And how do you avoid the Fox Tapeworm?

"Avoid" it??? Whatever for?

by Anonymousreply 22December 12, 2023 1:33 AM

High bush blueberries grow near my home and I pick them every summer. Free!

by Anonymousreply 23December 12, 2023 1:38 AM

I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I hate Honey Crisp apples and resent their increasing market share.

That is all.

by Anonymousreply 24December 12, 2023 2:01 AM

[quote]I hate Honey Crisp apples

Yeah. What's the big deal? I bought two. I ate one, and it was so cellulose-y, I threw the other one away. Apples have become as bad as tomatoes and peaches.

by Anonymousreply 25December 12, 2023 2:27 AM

It has Nothing to do withFertilizer, it the VARIETY of blueberry bush.

by Anonymousreply 26December 12, 2023 2:36 AM

Who is picking these giant blueberries? Machines?

by Anonymousreply 27December 12, 2023 12:59 PM

R22, Maria Callas died from tapeworm infection?

by Anonymousreply 28December 12, 2023 1:01 PM

I like blueberries but rarely buy them for whatever reason. I will get them when I'm dog sitting my sister's pup. She goes nuts for blueberries (and loves catching them in her mouth).

by Anonymousreply 29December 12, 2023 2:04 PM

I blame the gays with their size fetish.

by Anonymousreply 30December 12, 2023 2:09 PM

My dog loooooooves the big fat oversized blueberries.

by Anonymousreply 31December 12, 2023 2:25 PM

When they're big like that, they're likely coming from Mexico and/or China and you all know what that means: poo-poo fertilizer. Seriously, unless they have a USDA Organic seal on the container, stay clear of them.

by Anonymousreply 32December 12, 2023 2:29 PM

Poo poo IS organic.

by Anonymousreply 33December 12, 2023 2:47 PM

Even organic berries are oversized and tasteless now, R32.

by Anonymousreply 34December 12, 2023 2:52 PM

This is happening to grapes, too. Red and green, I've had some lately the size of a golf ball.

They taste fine, but they are HUGE.

by Anonymousreply 35December 12, 2023 4:01 PM

The vast majority of produce you buy in a grocery store comes from outside the US. Much of it comes from Central America, and then there's all the stuff that comes from China. By the time it hits the shelves in the US it's already weeks old and much of it is already in the active rotting process, especially in the winter months. Best thing to do is to check any produce that has a high water content for areas that are softer than the rest of it before you buy it. Those items rot much faster than low water vegetables, like carrots, cabbage, broccoli & cauliflower. Cucumbers in grocery stores are the world's worst for being rotten on the shelves.

by Anonymousreply 36December 12, 2023 4:09 PM

R36 That’s a lie. Sources please.

by Anonymousreply 37December 12, 2023 4:12 PM

I think that there is a conspiracy to replace all Fuji apples with honeycrisp.

Dingleberries are getting too big!

by Anonymousreply 39December 12, 2023 4:25 PM

Attack of the killer dingleberry

by Anonymousreply 42December 12, 2023 5:28 PM

Contrary to R36, I'm not sure a lot of fresh produce comes from China except maybe for specialty stores like urban Asian markets. The U.S. keeps tariffs on many Chinese food products and the American consumer generally doesn't trust stuff from China, especially fresh food items. Also, it's just too far away to keep most things "fresh" without there being eventual news of them being chemically saturated etc.. I could be wrong and there could be more Chinese items in the produce section than I know so I'll have to check when I go to the store tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 43December 13, 2023 4:27 PM

R10 and R11 - inadequate self-shaming. There's also the "that".

by Anonymousreply 46December 13, 2023 7:11 PM

OP - blueberries are not in season. Stop buying imported fruit, out of season, dimwit.

by Anonymousreply 47December 13, 2023 7:13 PM

Something like this was done a couple of decades ago to jalapeños. They look like were crossed with something larger, bell peppers, I think, and Walmart suppliers now generally carry the larger jalapeños. They're not as hot an flavorful as the smaller ones, which are now harder to find.

Maybe the blueberries are being altered.

by Anonymousreply 48December 13, 2023 9:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 49December 13, 2023 9:33 PM

Blueberries are getting too expensive.

Bananas are too big

by Anonymousreply 51December 13, 2023 9:41 PM

Too big for what, BPC?

by Anonymousreply 52December 13, 2023 9:43 PM

Please forgive the speech to text errors in R50.

R38 Honey crisp are becoming more common because growers can make a higher profit. They are a more challenging variety to grow, compared to the others. These trees require extra care to prevent disease. The honey crisp apple has a thin skin which is easily damaged. Each apple picked has to have the stem snipped to prevent damage to the other apples. They are only worth growing if the grower can get a high price. If the price drops too low, growers will move on to grow another variety.

I like Honey Crisp because they have a reliable taste.

Blueberry grown in Australia breaks record as world’s heaviest

A giant blueberry that tips the scales at a whopping 20.4 grams (0.71 ounces) officially entered the record books this week.

The fruit was picked on November 13 and the record for heaviest blueberry was confirmed this week, a spokesperson for Guinness World Records told CNN on Friday.

The record-breaking berry measured 39.31 millimeters (1.55 inches) across, roughly the same size as a table tennis ball. It was grown in Corindi, New South Wales, Australia, by staff at blueberry grower Costa Group.

I haven’t seen Braeburns in a few years. Why farmers aren’t raising these most delicious apples in the world confounds me.

by Anonymousreply 91March 16, 2024 9:05 AM

I think why growers have gravitated towards larger blueberries is the issue of spoilage. Fruit decays from the outside in through bruises and wounds that allow molds in. Larger individual fruits have less surface than a similar mass of smaller fruits, so are less likely to spoil as quickly. More surface area also speeds the loss of water and quality loss.

by Anonymousreply 92March 16, 2024 9:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 96March 16, 2024 5:49 PM

R96 "Why can’t I find Braeburn Apples anymore?

In today’s fast-paced apple world this sweet-tart, spicy maverick may at long last be obsolete. Lacking the consistency of modern apples, and suffering from difficulties like Braeburn Browning Disorder due to higher internal carbon dioxide concentrations, enterprising breeders began looking for Braeburn descendants that could replace its parent (and be trademarked for profit of course). And so, the ungrateful children of the Braeburn: Envy, Jazz, Sweetie, and Kanzi are sweeping this trailblazing old-timer into oblivion, leaving no room on the grocery store shelf for the apple to whom they owe so much."
