xtc - pop and new wave greatness, overlooked in the united states
any big fans? i know people get mad at the word "underrated". XTC was hailed by critics and hugely respected by other musicians but due to a lack of touring and poor management they never had much success outside of the UK. XTC is primarily a vehicle for the songwriting of andy partridge but bassist colin mourning contributed many terrific songs. they incorporate a tremendous amount of influences, power pop, folk, jazz, new wave, and psychedelic. i'm often reminded of the cars, the beatles, supertramp, steely dan, talking heads, and the police when listening to XTC. Due to andy partridge's extreme fear of performing and flying they stopped touring very early in their career.
Some of my favorite songs: the meeting place, runaways, senses working overtime, grass, this world over, yacht dance, hold me daddy, that's really super supergirl, here comes president kill again, meccanik dancing, and easter theatre.

New Wave wasn't really a big thing in the US. New Wave = British bands mostly.

I can understand the Jam not making it in the U.S.. Paul Weller was a brilliant musician and songwriter, but their sensibility was too British. XTC not so much. They were a college radio favorite, though.

XTC is absolutely stellar - I recently told my 21-year old son he is required to get into them.

Around 1981 or 82 I had Joan Jett /xtc tickets but was grounded & not allowed to go. They never toured again.

R8 they opened for Joan Jett? What a weird lineup. Wouldn’t think her audience would dig them at all.

Who knows R9 They were both punky at the start but Joan was pop by then. A bit new wave - so maybe that or same record label. I would’ve loved to see them - Drums & Wires is still one of my favs. I was also grounded for Duran Duran with Talk Talk - so never got to see Talk Talk. Another I missed was the original Clash lineup. We thought they would have another lp after Combat Rock so went to The Dead instead. Dumd choice. Anyway - fun topic.

R10 which album was talk talk supporting? they were so killer as a poppy new romantic act but i'm most fond of the latter period stuff. did you know their record label sued them for being too avant garde?

R11 The First. I didn’t know that (sued) because the label released these increasingly expansive albums Laughing Stock is sucjh a beautiful recording With the Clash we saw the Cut the Crap tour but Mick was gone.

R8 I got to see XTC on that tour in 1981. Andy Partridge soon developed severe stage fright and they would no longer tour. My appreciation of XTC grew with each new album they released. I consider them easily among the ten best musical acts of the 1980s.

r16 dear god was their biggest song in the states. it was originally cut from skylarking and then put on a b-side, andy partridge was embarrassed about the lyrics and didn't think the song was good enough to be released but it was a hit with college radio. the whole production of that skylarking album was a petty mess. it's hailed as their greatest work but andy hates it because of todd rundgren's mixing. he later released his own mix that he claims to be very happy with that "fixes" it but there are barely any differences at all.

OP Your bold and unique refusal to use capital letters really sets you off from the crowd as a true change agent. It's the type of rebellious nonconformity I envy. I wish I had the balls to be like you, but I just can't do it. It's a part of me I'm working on. Don't ever stop; we need you.

I can toggle the caps lock. If It really makes me come off as an asshole then I'll put it the extra effort. I'm sorry, just bringing up a random band that I like is lazy and it isn't really a good conversation. I shouldn't be spewing whatever shit comes into my head just because I'm lonely. I'm gonna take a break from this place.

bornslippy? I think I know where OP is from.
I always liked XTC well enough. They were never in my top tier but I liked a few songs. I like Andy Partridge's voice, even if it's very similar to a few other musicians (the vocalist from China Crisis comes to mind).

XTC is one of my favorites. There was a tour recently with original drummer called Extc that has Andy's blessing. Sadly I was out of town and missed the stop where I live.

Skylarking is a marvelous album... I have the vinyl, it does not include "Dear God" (man, a) I don't like that tune and b) it's just too different from the rest of the album). "Mermaid Smiled" is a much better close.
I love The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul - lyrics are outstanding (like so many of their tunes).

R5 That's bullshit. Most new wave bands were American. Blondie, Talking Heads, The Cars, Devo, B-52s. At that time their peers in UK were playing post-punk mostly. Wire, Gang of Four, The Fall, Joy Division, PiL. What you are thinking of is probably 80s synth pop and New Romantic movement (Depeche Mode, The Human League, Soft Cell, Simple Minds, Talk Talk, Japan and Adam and the Ants, Duran Duran, Culture Club etc.), not new wave.

I loved Skylarking and played it over and over circa 1990 (yes, in college). I had it on cassette, which did include "Dear God." One Thousand Umbrellas was my "feeling sorry for myself over lost love" go-to.

I'm a huge fan.
About 7 or 8 years ago I bumped into Andy Partridge in a record shop in London. He was absolutely charming and even let me take a selfie with him.
I'm glad he (and Colin) are making music again, albeit not as XTC or together. One day I hope they patch it up (and with Dave) for a final hurrah.
