xtc - pop and new wave greatness, overlooked in the united states

any big fans? i know people get mad at the word "underrated". XTC was hailed by critics and hugely respected by other musicians but due to a lack of touring and poor management they never had much success outside of the UK. XTC is primarily a vehicle for the songwriting of andy partridge but bassist colin mourning contributed many terrific songs. they incorporate a tremendous amount of influences, power pop, folk, jazz, new wave, and psychedelic. i'm often reminded of the cars, the beatles, supertramp, steely dan, talking heads, and the police when listening to XTC. Due to andy partridge's extreme fear of performing and flying they stopped touring very early in their career.

Some of my favorite songs: the meeting place, runaways, senses working overtime, grass, this world over, yacht dance, hold me daddy, that's really super supergirl, here comes president kill again, meccanik dancing, and easter theatre.

OP continues to post shit no none cares about?..yet again.

by Anonymousreply 1December 10, 2023 1:28 AM

r1 fuck you, nasty bitch

by Anonymousreply 2December 10, 2023 1:33 AM

r1 troll obsessed with 'mouseboy', a stellar contributor. i'm ashamed to have offended such a great poster.

by Anonymousreply 3December 10, 2023 1:34 AM

I liked Senses Working Overtime.

by Anonymousreply 4December 10, 2023 1:36 AM

New Wave wasn't really a big thing in the US. New Wave = British bands mostly.

by Anonymousreply 5December 10, 2023 1:48 AM

I can understand the Jam not making it in the U.S.. Paul Weller was a brilliant musician and songwriter, but their sensibility was too British. XTC not so much. They were a college radio favorite, though.

by Anonymousreply 6December 10, 2023 2:06 AM

XTC is absolutely stellar - I recently told my 21-year old son he is required to get into them.

by Anonymousreply 7December 10, 2023 2:26 AM

Around 1981 or 82 I had Joan Jett /xtc tickets but was grounded & not allowed to go. They never toured again.

by Anonymousreply 8December 10, 2023 2:48 AM

R8 they opened for Joan Jett? What a weird lineup. Wouldn’t think her audience would dig them at all.

by Anonymousreply 9December 10, 2023 2:56 AM

Who knows R9 They were both punky at the start but Joan was pop by then. A bit new wave - so maybe that or same record label. I would’ve loved to see them - Drums & Wires is still one of my favs. I was also grounded for Duran Duran with Talk Talk - so never got to see Talk Talk. Another I missed was the original Clash lineup. We thought they would have another lp after Combat Rock so went to The Dead instead. Dumd choice. Anyway - fun topic.

by Anonymousreply 10December 10, 2023 3:09 AM

R10 which album was talk talk supporting? they were so killer as a poppy new romantic act but i'm most fond of the latter period stuff. did you know their record label sued them for being too avant garde?

by Anonymousreply 11December 10, 2023 3:29 AM

R11 The First. I didn’t know that (sued) because the label released these increasingly expansive albums Laughing Stock is sucjh a beautiful recording With the Clash we saw the Cut the Crap tour but Mick was gone.

by Anonymousreply 12December 10, 2023 4:16 AM

I think I remember their song Peter Pumkinhead. Not really a fan.

by Anonymousreply 13December 10, 2023 4:59 AM

Plans for Nigel?

by Anonymousreply 14December 10, 2023 5:08 AM

I'm merely a man and I bring nothing but love for you.

by Anonymousreply 15December 10, 2023 10:30 AM

I liked a few of their songs - Mayor of Simpleton, Dear God, and this one in particular

R8 I got to see XTC on that tour in 1981. Andy Partridge soon developed severe stage fright and they would no longer tour. My appreciation of XTC grew with each new album they released. I consider them easily among the ten best musical acts of the 1980s.

by Anonymousreply 17December 10, 2023 11:59 AM

People around NYC who could tune into WLIR/WDRE got all of the best new wave/alternative

by Anonymousreply 18December 10, 2023 12:13 PM

I OWN this album

by Anonymousreply 19December 10, 2023 12:22 PM

r16 dear god was their biggest song in the states. it was originally cut from skylarking and then put on a b-side, andy partridge was embarrassed about the lyrics and didn't think the song was good enough to be released but it was a hit with college radio. the whole production of that skylarking album was a petty mess. it's hailed as their greatest work but andy hates it because of todd rundgren's mixing. he later released his own mix that he claims to be very happy with that "fixes" it but there are barely any differences at all.

by Anonymousreply 20December 10, 2023 12:40 PM

OP Y0u are lazy and pretentious.

by Anonymousreply 21December 10, 2023 12:57 PM

r21 i'm sorry i regret posting this thread honestly. i wish there was a delete function on dl but i have to just take it

by Anonymousreply 22December 10, 2023 2:18 PM

OP Your bold and unique refusal to use capital letters really sets you off from the crowd as a true change agent. It's the type of rebellious nonconformity I envy. I wish I had the balls to be like you, but I just can't do it. It's a part of me I'm working on. Don't ever stop; we need you.

by Anonymousreply 23December 10, 2023 2:43 PM

r23 my shift key is broken on my keyboard

by Anonymousreply 24December 10, 2023 2:48 PM

Also overlooked: capitalisation. It's random in OP's post.

by Anonymousreply 25December 10, 2023 2:49 PM

I can toggle the caps lock. If It really makes me come off as an asshole then I'll put it the extra effort. I'm sorry, just bringing up a random band that I like is lazy and it isn't really a good conversation. I shouldn't be spewing whatever shit comes into my head just because I'm lonely. I'm gonna take a break from this place.

by Anonymousreply 26December 10, 2023 2:50 PM

I love XTC. Mummer and The Big Express are probably my favorite albums of theirs.

by Anonymousreply 27December 10, 2023 2:50 PM

The type of person who listens to XTC is the type of person who has a broken shift key.

by Anonymousreply 28December 10, 2023 2:52 PM

bornslippy? I think I know where OP is from.

I always liked XTC well enough. They were never in my top tier but I liked a few songs. I like Andy Partridge's voice, even if it's very similar to a few other musicians (the vocalist from China Crisis comes to mind).

by Anonymousreply 29December 10, 2023 2:54 PM

XTC is one of my favorites. There was a tour recently with original drummer called Extc that has Andy's blessing. Sadly I was out of town and missed the stop where I live.

by Anonymousreply 30December 10, 2023 2:57 PM

Andy is fragile. I hope he's happy now

by Anonymousreply 31December 10, 2023 2:59 PM

Love them and thankful I saw them a few times in NYC back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 32December 10, 2023 3:05 PM

Skylarking is a marvelous album... I have the vinyl, it does not include "Dear God" (man, a) I don't like that tune and b) it's just too different from the rest of the album). "Mermaid Smiled" is a much better close.

I love The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul - lyrics are outstanding (like so many of their tunes).

R5 That's bullshit. Most new wave bands were American. Blondie, Talking Heads, The Cars, Devo, B-52s. At that time their peers in UK were playing post-punk mostly. Wire, Gang of Four, The Fall, Joy Division, PiL. What you are thinking of is probably 80s synth pop and New Romantic movement (Depeche Mode, The Human League, Soft Cell, Simple Minds, Talk Talk, Japan and Adam and the Ants, Duran Duran, Culture Club etc.), not new wave.

by Anonymousreply 34December 10, 2023 3:18 PM

R8 R10 It seems like you were grounded a lot

by Anonymousreply 35December 10, 2023 3:20 PM

R10 They did have another lp after Combat Rock

by Anonymousreply 36December 10, 2023 3:21 PM

I loved Skylarking and played it over and over circa 1990 (yes, in college). I had it on cassette, which did include "Dear God." One Thousand Umbrellas was my "feeling sorry for myself over lost love" go-to.

by Anonymousreply 37December 10, 2023 3:59 PM

I'm a huge fan.

About 7 or 8 years ago I bumped into Andy Partridge in a record shop in London. He was absolutely charming and even let me take a selfie with him.

I'm glad he (and Colin) are making music again, albeit not as XTC or together. One day I hope they patch it up (and with Dave) for a final hurrah.

by Anonymousreply 38December 10, 2023 4:02 PM

Earn Enough for Us is also on Skylarking

by Anonymousreply 39December 10, 2023 4:48 PM

I like the pill better than the band.

by Anonymousreply 40December 10, 2023 5:02 PM

I've heard of the band OP but never knew any of their tunes. I loved the song you posted at the top so I'll be checking them out when I get the time.

by Anonymousreply 41December 10, 2023 5:39 PM

found an oddity - andy partridge guest on loveline with dr.drew and adam corolla (1992)

r42 correction - with jim trenton cohosting, not adam corolla

by Anonymousreply 43December 11, 2023 5:36 PM

Another favorite, a surprisingly upbeat Andy.

(I'm Feeling) Extrovert - I think the version linked is a Partridge re-work from the original (I prefer the original).
