Why did Glen Miller join the air force?

He was such a talented individual, why didn't he get out of enlisting?

Just look at what happened.

by Anonymousreply 42December 10, 2023 3:17 AM

I’m pretty sure all men of a certain age were drafted. Not so easy to get “out of it.”

by Anonymousreply 1December 8, 2023 1:31 PM

He’s not dead, he’s missing!

by Anonymousreply 2December 8, 2023 1:33 PM

Oops, I was wrong. He did enlist. Maybe he was a patriot.

by Anonymousreply 3December 8, 2023 1:33 PM

So why didn't the military just use him as a band leader for the USO instead of sending him off in that plane? It's just such a waste.

by Anonymousreply 4December 8, 2023 1:36 PM

Just to be one of those nitpickers we all hate

It was the US Army Air Corps, the US Air Force did not exist until after the war, And he vol took an officers commission he did not enlist because it’s the enlisted ranks that enlist.

It was not just him it was several or many from his band as well.

The best theory I heard was that a returning bomber who still had a load of bombs might have dropped then, as they did and not realized the smaller plane was below them.

by Anonymousreply 5December 8, 2023 1:41 PM

Shit, I didn't know he actually wanted to go!!

What a shame.

He wasn't hot, but he was talented. It must have been a huge story, back in the day.

R4

He was on a routine flight from one venue to another venue. Members of the USO also flew in planes in order to do their job in WW2.

Bob Hope, a civilian, flew all over active wars zones in order to do his USO type of entertainment.

Only today in the me me me me non serving world we live in would people be shocked that even rich and famous people risked their lives in service to country.

by Anonymousreply 7December 8, 2023 1:48 PM

Hello? Australia???

by Anonymousreply 8December 8, 2023 1:51 PM

If he wasn't dead then, he's dead now, Dot @R2!

by Anonymousreply 9December 8, 2023 1:56 PM

I watched an old movie, The Glen Miller Story, with Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson and according to the Glen in the movie, he said a lot of his fans and his musicians were g etting drafted, and he wanted to do his part. Then he died. I thought his music was very evocative of that time. The war years.

by Anonymousreply 10December 8, 2023 1:59 PM

Here's the trailer from the Jimmy Stewart biopic. I thought Miller's music was sublime. Very nostalgic.

by Anonymousreply 15December 8, 2023 3:42 PM

OP, be careful. You don't want to sound like Mango Mussolini.

Glenn Miller joined the air force because he believed the cause was worth fighting for!

by Anonymousreply 16December 8, 2023 4:05 PM

Go ask him

by Anonymousreply 17December 8, 2023 4:06 PM

He wanted to support the troops and he also knew that so many of his fans were affected t hat he wanted to support them. I loved the scene in the movie where he jazzes up the march.

by Anonymousreply 18December 8, 2023 4:44 PM

Leslie Howard as well. They probably felt so much was at stake and they felt compelled to enlist. 3 of my uncles enlisted. 2 did come back, but one was killed by a land mine. From growing up around them they seemed very passionate and felt like it was something they should do.

by Anonymousreply 19December 9, 2023 12:29 AM

The Glenn Miller Orchestra still tours quite a bit. It is awesome to be able to hear that music in person! I have wondered at times what my grandparents would think if they knew I went to go see a band of their era.

This must be a crossover thread for the Heartstopper fandom while they await a wrap on production of S3.

by Anonymousreply 24December 9, 2023 5:32 AM

Could their BE a more DL thread than this one?!?!?

by Anonymousreply 25December 9, 2023 7:43 AM

He had to do something important or they wouldn’t make a movie about him.

by Anonymousreply 26December 9, 2023 9:46 AM

Wait until OP finds out about Jimmy Stewart's military career.

by Anonymousreply 27December 9, 2023 9:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 33December 9, 2023 1:30 PM

We’re not, we’re talking about ‘Glen’ Miller.

by Anonymousreply 34December 9, 2023 1:40 PM

Samuel Barber also served in the Army Air Corps, composing his second symphony while in service.

Lines were cut from the original DVD release of The GM Story and I think from the 1980s release version to theaters. They mostly had to do with Helen Miller’s lines where Glenn is discouraged, doesn’t believe in himself enough, and is encouraged by Helen. See a fully restored version (or the VHS).

If Jimmy Stewart & June Allyson don’t get on your nerves …

by Anonymousreply 38December 9, 2023 3:24 PM

R38 OMG, yes! I managed to enjoy the movie for the music, and Jimmy Stewart did a decent job playing Glenn Miller. But June Allyson was SO annoying.
