I’m pretty sure all men of a certain age were drafted. Not so easy to get “out of it.”

He’s not dead, he’s missing!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 8, 2023 1:33 PM |
Oops, I was wrong. He did enlist. Maybe he was a patriot.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 8, 2023 1:33 PM |
So why didn't the military just use him as a band leader for the USO instead of sending him off in that plane? It's just such a waste.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 8, 2023 1:36 PM |
Just to be one of those nitpickers we all hate
It was the US Army Air Corps, the US Air Force did not exist until after the war, And he vol took an officers commission he did not enlist because it’s the enlisted ranks that enlist.
It was not just him it was several or many from his band as well.
The best theory I heard was that a returning bomber who still had a load of bombs might have dropped then, as they did and not realized the smaller plane was below them.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 8, 2023 1:41 PM |
Shit, I didn't know he actually wanted to go!!
What a shame.
He wasn't hot, but he was talented. It must have been a huge story, back in the day.

R4
He was on a routine flight from one venue to another venue. Members of the USO also flew in planes in order to do their job in WW2.
Bob Hope, a civilian, flew all over active wars zones in order to do his USO type of entertainment.
Only today in the me me me me non serving world we live in would people be shocked that even rich and famous people risked their lives in service to country.

I watched an old movie, The Glen Miller Story, with Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson and according to the Glen in the movie, he said a lot of his fans and his musicians were g etting drafted, and he wanted to do his part. Then he died. I thought his music was very evocative of that time. The war years.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 8, 2023 1:59 PM |
Here's the trailer from the Jimmy Stewart biopic. I thought Miller's music was sublime. Very nostalgic.

R1. Wow. What an asshole. You have access to information - history! - in your hand so you ignore that and put up stupidity. Then the oops bullshit.

OP, be careful. You don't want to sound like Mango Mussolini.
Glenn Miller joined the air force because he believed the cause was worth fighting for!

Go ask him
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 8, 2023 4:06 PM |
He wanted to support the troops and he also knew that so many of his fans were affected t hat he wanted to support them. I loved the scene in the movie where he jazzes up the march.

Leslie Howard as well. They probably felt so much was at stake and they felt compelled to enlist. 3 of my uncles enlisted. 2 did come back, but one was killed by a land mine. From growing up around them they seemed very passionate and felt like it was something they should do.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra still tours quite a bit. It is awesome to be able to hear that music in person! I have wondered at times what my grandparents would think if they knew I went to go see a band of their era.

Lines were cut from the original DVD release of The GM Story and I think from the 1980s release version to theaters. They mostly had to do with Helen Miller’s lines where Glenn is discouraged, doesn’t believe in himself enough, and is encouraged by Helen. See a fully restored version (or the VHS).

If Jimmy Stewart & June Allyson don’t get on your nerves …
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 9, 2023 3:24 PM |
R38 OMG, yes! I managed to enjoy the movie for the music, and Jimmy Stewart did a decent job playing Glenn Miller. But June Allyson was SO annoying.

[quote] On a cold & rainy night One Mister Miller had a rare flight Glenn was up there boppin' a rhythm Then the engine stopped to listen with him Play that beat, oh, oh Suddenly he heard this sound This melody that keeps spinning 'round and 'round Now he resides and plays trombone In the mystic unknown zone
