I don't think Al Michaels was ever in the in the NFL or NHL but he's called games from both leagues. And he's the best.

Vin Scully never played in the MLB (I believe) and he's perhaps the best baseball commentator of all time.

Doris Burke does NBA games and she's knowledgable and fantastic off the cuff during games.

I don't really see the issue. When I watch sports I don't really pay any attention to the commentary and I don't want the punditry before or after. That's not because I think pundits aren't qualified, I just don't really care about what they say. I just like to watch the actual sport.

I watch a lot of sports and there’s a few female commentators that get on my nerves. Beth Mowins is one of my least favorite. Not only is her voice annoying, but she adds zero analysis to the game.

He has a tiny point (pun intended) about being qualified to commentate, but can't make up his mind what it means.

He is right that it's a different game between men's and women's football. But then he can't decide if the 'merit' to commentate the men's game comes 1) exclusively from having played the men's game (and we know some of those are shit commentators too...Michael Owen), 2) having come up in the culture of the men's game even if you haven't played at it's highest level, or 3) being able to translate experience from having come up in the women's game to the men's game. He's suggesting #2 might be more relevant than #3, and in both cases they have to prove themselves. And his issue seems to be that if you're in the third group using first-hand, "I've done it this way", it may not be so relevant.

I think he's probably annoyed that he got turned down for a commentary role or perhaps he's just annoyed he's never been approached for such a job. Either way, he seems bitter.

His initial tweet was just sexist and angry, but since then he's calmed down and is then trying to make it seem like he's just a bit concerned about people not getting roles based on their talent and abilities alone.

I think there's a discussion to be had about meritocracy and quotas. For example, if you were interviewing a man and a woman for a role commentating on men's football and the gender split of the existing staff was 49% women, 51% men - IF the woman wasn't the best person for the job based on the interview but was awarded the role to make the male/female split 50/50, then that wouldn't be right. Whether that would actually happen is another matter of course. It's so hard to know because most people approach this debate with an agenda.
