What causes somebody to become bitter and jaded?

Are you bitter and jaded?

by Anonymousreply 33December 8, 2023 5:43 PM

Being DL webmistress.

Shitty childhood. Terrible social anxiety. People are mean.

by Anonymousreply 7December 8, 2023 12:24 AM

Oh yeah, I have compensated for my trauma with lots of anonymous sex. It just made things worse. I have only seen the worst in people.

by Anonymousreply 8December 8, 2023 12:25 AM

Entitled. Tinymeat. Mentally ill.

by Anonymousreply 9December 8, 2023 12:26 AM

That was the working title to my autobiography, R9.

by Anonymousreply 10December 8, 2023 12:36 AM

R10 If we’re oppressed it pays off more.

by Anonymousreply 11December 8, 2023 12:38 AM

I know I am…I won’t even lie about that. I went through hell with bad relationships and friendships, alcohol, financial instability, coming to terms with my traumatic childhood and subsequent trauma in the military. I’m currently rewiring my brain, but the bitterness and anger are hard to overcome. I read some of my posts here and I sometimes cringe at how angry and bitter I sound. But I have to own it so I can get better.

by Anonymousreply 12December 8, 2023 12:45 AM

Life, darling. Life.

OP types fat and refuses to answer her own questions, about which she is an expert.

Getting older. I’m not bitter but I do find myself getting more and more jaded by the state of the world as I get older.

I'm jaded, but not bitter!

by Anonymousreply 20December 8, 2023 2:12 AM

Watching the worst people get ahead while the best often fall behind.

by Anonymousreply 21December 8, 2023 2:21 AM

There’s a guy on the May December thread who’s extremely bitter that everyone didn’t appreciate the genius of Todd Haynes’ masterwork. Soon to add jaded to his resume no doubt.

by Anonymousreply 22December 8, 2023 3:06 AM

More withdrawn than anything.

by Anonymousreply 23December 8, 2023 3:34 AM

I’m as bitter as burnt toast and my toaster is ready to catch on fire.

by Anonymousreply 24December 8, 2023 3:38 AM

As George Carlin said, "Inside every cynical person is a disappointed idealist".

by Anonymousreply 25December 8, 2023 3:38 AM

School, and then the workplace. Teachers and kids can be really mean. Plus, the focus on looks: who's cute, who's prom king, etc.

Then, the workplace. No matter how hard you think you're working, no matter how competent you are -- some stupid ass-kissing joke of a person ... is your supervisor.

by Anonymousreply 26December 8, 2023 3:40 AM

Disrespect. A lack of discipline in others.

And a certain pint-sized harlot.

by Anonymousreply 27December 8, 2023 3:48 AM

Shut it, Patsy. If anyone should be bitter and jaded, it's a washed-out, small-town beauty queen such as yourself.

In my experience, it's often lonely unfriendly people. Some just seem to have an inability to engage their mouth before brain, which means over time they offend more and more people who keep their distance. This then makes them even worse. They feel sorry for themselves while blaming everyone else.

I had an old neighbour like that. I got talking to her one day when she was doing her garden. She started going on about how her sons lived nearby but hardly ever visited her, etc. At first I felt sorry for her, but then she started insulting pretty much all the neighbours and the very sons who were keeping away. It quickly became apparent she had a very rigid view of how everything should be done, and if people didn't line up to her expectations, she would tell them about it. After that conversation I, too, kept my distance, lest I get another lecture about putting out my bin incorrectly or mowing my lawn the wrong way (yes, honestly).

In DBT therapy, there's this principle where one can either:

A. Tolerate and accept the situation. B. Stay miserable.

I think the jaded and bitter choose to stay miserable, even if the choice is subconscious. I struggle greatly with accepting "what is", and often find myself dwelling on the negative aspects of my current situation. It's a tough habit to unlearn, and you have to be willing to change your perspective. I'm actively trying to avoid becoming a misanthrope/negative Nancy/Mopey Mary.
