I always loved this movie. Better than the series. More like the book, which is also a fun read.

It is M*A*S*H!

by Anonymousreply 2December 6, 2023 5:37 PM

It is a funny movie

I liked Spearchucker. The series kept him a couple shows and then he disappeared. They should have told us his name and then had a permanent black doctor character. I always considered that a missed opportunity.

The way they treated Sally Kellerman's Hot Lips was very cruel. Maybe it was funny back then but watching it recently I felt so bad for her character and thought it was sick.

Gary Burghoff was the only actor who made the switch to the TV show, and they destroyed the character of Radar in the process. Movie Radar was savvy and cynical.

TV Radar was a sad little Mama 's boy who sleeps with a teddy bear.

R4 I think they got rid of him because there were no black doctors in Korea or at least that was the reasoning.

by Anonymousreply 7December 6, 2023 7:39 PM

R5 Yeah, it was terrible. Sally Kellerman was beautiful back in the day though.

It wasn’t a hospital.

One of my favorites. I grew up watching the tv series, but once I discovered the movie, I had a hard time every enjoying the tv show again.

Also, Donald Sutherland is really sexy as Hawkeye, IMO.

One of the few times I remember my Dad taking me to the movies was to see a double bill of PATTON and M*A*S*H. He had already seen PATTON and, as a rah-rah, right wing, pro-military Hawk, he thought exposing me to PATTON at an early age would convert me, too. But, going in, he had absolutely no freakin' idea what M*A*S*H was about. (Ironic, since he actually served in Korea himself.)

I'm sure some of M*A*S*H went over my head, but I understood enough to (a) really enjoy it and (b) probably make Dad uncomfortable. But I also remember him laughing quite a bit, which is one of the good memories I have of him.

P.S. The PATTON brainwashing didn't work.

Has anyone ever read the Richard Hooker book on which it was based?

I've always thought that MASH could be described as Catch-22 light.

This was the greatest film I'd ever seen. I was an usher and doorman at Cinema 1 and it ran 3 weeks before my entry in college. I recall seeing it @ 21 times in bits and pieces. We all loved it; the life style represented was much more Vietnam era than Korean War.

I might also say that I found the Alan alda tripe unwatchable. Robert Altman. Robert Altman. He could make the most horrufying situation somehow absurd and laughable, but not in any cheap or exploitative way. Slow rise, with many missteps, to his mature masterpieces: The Player, Short Cuts, Gosford Park. I didn't go to film school for nothing.

I went so I could enjoy film makers more deeply!

The intercom announcements were added in post-production because they needed more transitions.

There’s a stage version of the movie script…watered down a bit as you can imagine.

It was the fall play of my senior year in high school. I auditioned on a dare,, and won the role of Col. Henry Blake. I was very good at nonchalant exasperation.

R12 I read the book decades ago, but I don't remember much about it.

As there was never any fidelity or authenticity to the costumes (non-military, which granted, there aren't many) or to the men's and women's hairstyles (gasp!), in either the film or the TV series, I don't see any issues with a black doctor during the Korean War.

by Anonymousreply 19December 7, 2023 1:53 AM

👀you do understand that it was based on actual experience…and that there actually were black doctors in the Korean War…and nurses, and medics, and JAGs,…

by Anonymousreply 20December 7, 2023 2:31 AM

Gotta agree with r5 and I've had that reaction for decades.

Still, "My God, they've shot him!" as cried by Hot Lips during the football game is pretty funny.

Jo Ann Pflug's pfame was pfleeting.

by Anonymousreply 22December 7, 2023 3:48 AM

That’s Mrs. Chuck Wollery to you!

Woolery

Bump

by Anonymousreply 25March 18, 2024 12:08 AM

Love the film more than the series.

by Anonymousreply 26March 18, 2024 12:28 AM

Not a sports fan but that football game sequence is hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 27March 18, 2024 12:28 AM

She was some Dish!

Quite big tits

M.A.S.H. was a "stealth" film about the insanity of the Vietnam War. They had to pretend it was the Korean War to get it made.

by Anonymousreply 29March 18, 2024 12:41 AM

Altman, crusty bastard that he was, was never reluctant to say publicly that he thought the TV show sucked and considered Alda a hack.

by Anonymousreply 30March 18, 2024 12:42 AM

Alda's not a hack, he's okay as an actor. Donald Sutherland is one hell of an act to follow. Alda definitely wasn't up for that.

by Anonymousreply 31March 18, 2024 12:45 AM

R29. You’re assbackwards. The novel was about Korea…no one was pretending. The movie was openly and intentionally making a statement about Vietnam as well. There was no stealth.
