Stephen Colbert's Sad Last Days?

"Covid-19" twice and now "Ruptured Appendix" - what's the real story? I suspect he drinks... a lot.

by Anonymousreply 78December 17, 2023 5:55 PM

Alcohol doesn’t infect your appendix, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1December 5, 2023 7:19 PM

Yeah, I'm not seeing a connection between these ailments and alcohol.

by Anonymousreply 2December 5, 2023 7:25 PM

OP he’s a God freak. I’d doubt it’s alchol. Maybe he had covid twice & a ruptured appendix.

by Anonymousreply 3December 5, 2023 7:29 PM

I'm sure his five viewers are devastated.

by Anonymousreply 4December 5, 2023 7:35 PM

R4 = Brian Kilmeade and his sole fanbot.

by Anonymousreply 5December 5, 2023 7:39 PM

I still haven’t had Covid. I’m beginning to think something’s wrong with me.

by Anonymousreply 6December 5, 2023 7:52 PM

PNP went wrong

by Anonymousreply 7December 5, 2023 7:59 PM

[quote]... he’s a God freak. I’d doubt it’s alchol.

Isn't he Catholic? They can drink.

by Anonymousreply 8December 5, 2023 9:18 PM

I had a ruptured appendix. I had the operation to remove it on Sunday.

I was not released from the hospital until the following Saturday. Had a persistent 101+ fever even after the surgery and the hospital would not release me until the fever broke 6 days later. Then I spent another week in bed at home.

by Anonymousreply 9December 5, 2023 9:26 PM

[quote]OP he’s a God freak. I’d doubt it’s alchol.

That's hysterical. You obviously don't know many.

by Anonymousreply 10December 5, 2023 9:27 PM

R9, do you have a crazy pain tolerance?

I've never understood how people can stand appendix pain long enough for it to burst.

by Anonymousreply 11December 5, 2023 9:30 PM

R11, I was admitted to hospital for a blocked intestine. I had to get 2 units of blood because my bowel was dying. A surgeon came in at 2 am and said I needed emergency surgery. “Ok,” said I. I tuned in the tv and watched Endeavour on PBS expecting to be taken to OR within the hour.

I was taken to OR at 4pm in the afternoon. The surgeon had a full schedule and tacked me on at the end. Don’t ask me why he came to the hospital at 2am. He could’ve just told someone to tell me, “We’re putting you on the OR schedule. Dr So and So will come in and talk to you at 7am before he starts his first case.”

Later on I looked the surgeon up and saw he was being sued by a woman who had appendicitis. She was in the hospital and was told by the surgeon she needed surgery. 8 hours later her appendix burst. Same thing happened to her as happened to me -Dr told her emergency surgery was necessary, she expected to go into the OR at any minute but the surgeon returned home, went to bed, then did his entire OR schedule the next day, tacking her on at the end. In meantime her appendix burst, she got peritonitis.

She was suing because if he’d taken her right in and done her surgery, her appendix wouldn’t have burst, she would’ve avoided peritonitis, she would’ve had less pain, spent less time in hospital and needed fewer antibiotics, etc. She said the delay caused her to miss work, which she didn’t get paid for and nearly lost her job. So pain, suffering and loss of income.

Dont know what the upshot was. These cases can go on for years. But this guy didn’t give half a shit about “emergency” patients.”

Maybe that’s what happens to R9.

by Anonymousreply 12December 5, 2023 10:32 PM

^That's insane!

by Anonymousreply 13December 5, 2023 10:43 PM

Ruptured appendix is a medical emergency. Untreated it can kill you, glad he's ok.

by Anonymousreply 14December 5, 2023 10:45 PM

We're so happy you're glad he's ok, Doctor.

Have you told him or should we? It will mean a lot.

by Anonymousreply 15December 5, 2023 11:22 PM

Three weeks of medical leave in a year is a lot, considering he's been off five months because of the strikes.

I rely on his harsh and hilarious criticism of GOP nonsense every night to take the edge off an increasingly dystopian world.

Hurry back, Stephen!

by Anonymousreply 16December 6, 2023 3:52 AM

I hope not. I've always loved him because of Strangers With Candy.

by Anonymousreply 17December 6, 2023 4:03 AM

r7 = My Dough Burrous

by Anonymousreply 18December 6, 2023 4:07 AM

He helped me get through Dumbya. I’ll owe him forever for that.

by Anonymousreply 19December 6, 2023 4:08 AM

Oof. Same here, R19. He was my touchstone and sanity-saver for those years and during the height of Covid.

by Anonymousreply 20December 6, 2023 4:13 AM

My daughter, at 6 years old, was admitted to the Children's Hospital and was assessed to be suffering from appendicitis. For whatever reason, they waited until her appendix burst, and it wasn't a sudden thing, it took a few hours before this happened. This was a Children's Hospital in New York.

She made it out okay, but she actually had to have an IV to go home so i could give her IV antibiotics for a month. Her arm even developed a contracture from having the IV in for that long and she had to have physical therapy afterward to get it back to normal.

This was about 28 years ago, and we had Medicaid at that time (in New York). I think that played into it. I was just so grateful she didn't die that i never even considered bringing a lawsuit against them, but I believe we would have won big.

by Anonymousreply 21December 6, 2023 4:13 AM

R6, I haven't gotten Covid either. It's really overrated.

by Anonymousreply 22December 6, 2023 4:19 AM

They took my appendix when I was 17. But I have chronic problems with my colon, and as I get older I worry about that.

by Anonymousreply 23December 6, 2023 4:31 AM

I blame Streisand.

by Anonymousreply 24December 6, 2023 5:02 AM

Is he looking for a temp replacement? I have experience, and I hate fags too!

by Anonymousreply 25December 6, 2023 5:23 AM

[quote]I blame Streisand.

It is her fault Colbert got COVID again.

She made him fly out to her house in L.A. for an interview instead of coming to NYC to do publicity for her book like mere mortals do, and he contracted COVID on the trip.

by Anonymousreply 26December 6, 2023 5:49 AM

Nothing about him makes me think he's an alcoholic. Yes he's a Catholic. I was raised as a Catholic and my family was lousy with alcoholics, but again, Colbert has none of the red flags. I've seen his work, starting with Strangers with Candy, and read all the profiles. You could probably come up with something unkind to say about him, but at his age, if her were an alcoholic he'd look like absolute shit, and he just doesn't.

If you don't like him just say so, but don't make up wackadoodle theories about him.

by Anonymousreply 27December 6, 2023 5:55 AM

He is Catholic but as liberal as they come.

It is possible! People forget Biden and Pelosi are devout Roman Catholics but still support gay rights, reproductive rights, and civil rights. Pelosi marched in gay parades in the '80s and her first public statement as a member of Congress was about AIDS funding.

Colbert's breakout role was playing a gay teacher in Strangers With Candy in the '90s.

He's not a "God freak" or a homophobe, and anyone who suggests otherwise is just an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 28December 6, 2023 7:29 AM

Letterman said one of his biggest mistakes on CBS was not having regular guests hosts on his show. I think it's great that Kimmel uses them in the summer. Coberts "After Midnight" show is going to tank too. CBS is going very cheap with this future debacle.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 29December 6, 2023 8:28 AM

Jeez, was your doctor Dr Spaceman, r12?

At least you can sue in the States (for better or worse). Under the public health system we have you just have to put up with it.

Which includes my mum's Dr telling her for a fucking year(!) to eat more fibre in answer to her stomach pains (turns out she has stage 4 ovarian cancer). After chemo and radiation, with the radiation making tiny painful breaks in her legs, he told her she needed to exercise more - on her broken legs.

Actually, even writing this is making my blood boil.

by Anonymousreply 30December 6, 2023 9:00 AM

Why does the upcoming After Midnight need 10 executive producers, including Stephen Colbert's wife?

Doesn't sound like CBS is going all that cheap on this, R29.

by Anonymousreply 31December 6, 2023 9:54 AM

R30

Jesus, I’m so sorry. What is her prognosis at this point? I hope she is at least somewhat pain free.

by Anonymousreply 32December 6, 2023 10:10 AM

R27 is right. Any kind of persistent alcohol abuse after 50 is going to be all over the face and body-- slack or otherwise horrible skin, malaise, obvious cognitive decline. Not seeing any of that with Colbert. If anything, he seems to be aging really well.

by Anonymousreply 33December 6, 2023 10:34 AM

My favorite

by Anonymousreply 34December 6, 2023 12:07 PM

R30 I have read that women get shit on when it comes to health issues and I didn't believe it until my own sister had problems and if it wasn't for her aggressive insistence that something was wrong , pushing her doctor to do more, she'd have been in a mess. I'm so sorry about your mother. In general, doctors aren't what they used to be. You really do have to push to get them to do more than routine stuff.

by Anonymousreply 35December 6, 2023 1:18 PM

R35, I’m R12. I refused to leave the ER and kept telling them, “I have a blockage. I’m in severe pain. My mother, her father,, 2 of her sisters aunts and 1 of her brothers all had intestinal blockages. It’s in my family.” My mother was alive at the time, visiting from FL and in the ER with me insisting “She has what I had.”

I finally told them “I’m an NP in NYC at X medical center. You give me a goddamn abdominal CT with contrast. I’m not leaving until you do and my family and I will sue your fucking asses off if anything happens to me., you understand? Every one of you.”

They hated me. I was treated horribly before and after the surgery. You can’t imagine how pissed they were that I was right. I had showed them up.

I was lucky to get out of there alive.

My boss, a heart surgeon, had died a few years earlier of dead gut, which is what happens when you have a blockage in your intestine and your bowel gets gangrenous and dies. He had cancer. I knew I could die.

by Anonymousreply 36December 7, 2023 1:52 AM

That's so painful to hear, r36. I'm sorry you had to deal with such medical nonsense. Were your lawyers at least able to instruct the hospital/institution how not to blatantly and openly kill their other patients?

by Anonymousreply 37December 7, 2023 2:02 AM

“I doubt it’s alchol”.

Geez

I like a drink or too but is the DL now the salon of the the permanent-drunk?

by Anonymousreply 38December 7, 2023 2:15 AM

Well, Stephen seemed none the worst for wear yesterday.

It’s amazing that he was joking and kidding around with Chef Andres! He was in so much pain!

It’s cute that his wife was there yesterday, watching over her hubby.

Glad he’s back.

by Anonymousreply 39December 12, 2023 9:26 PM

He's intolerably smug and not the least bit original or funny like the rest of the late-night white males. #so1️⃣🎵and it would surprise me if he was a drinker

(^.^) wouldn't surprise me if he were a drinker

by Anonymousreply 41December 12, 2023 9:44 PM

I like him.

I also like Jimmy Kimmel.

by Anonymousreply 42December 12, 2023 9:48 PM

I adore Stephen COlbert and if you watched him Monday night both his opening monologue and his interview with Liz Cheney he puts the so called professional journalists to shame. He is my favorite of all of them., including Jon Stewart. I wish we were friends. Kimmel is...OK. He can be edgy and he can be very tedious. I watch him sometimes but Colbert I will not miss.

by Anonymousreply 43December 12, 2023 10:30 PM

R8 R10. He talks about not drinking. I believe him.

by Anonymousreply 44December 12, 2023 10:57 PM

I loved that whilst he gave Liz C. Time to hawk her book and (sort of) let her talk, he did call her out on the fact that she voted for the repigs’ agenda 90% of the time.

by Anonymousreply 45December 12, 2023 11:25 PM

That was a masterful interview with Cheney.

A ruptured appendix is no joke. From his account last night, it sounded like he developed some extent of sepsis.

by Anonymousreply 46December 13, 2023 12:28 AM

Stephen and Evie's relationship is very sweet to observe.

by Anonymousreply 47December 13, 2023 12:30 AM

During the 2016 election, Colbert was critical of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, describing her as someone who has "been around for a long time, but actually represents [...] what you would think of as the common systemic corruption of Washington, D.C." adding "I think people's hesitancy about Hillary Clinton is completely reasonable. [...] I can imagine that Trump might be the only person she could beat because she's not a great candidate. And she's got a lot of flaws and a lot of baggage that she can't shake off, however historic or even prepared for the job she is in this case."

by Anonymousreply 48December 13, 2023 12:35 AM

Maybe Barbra tried to cook lunch for him when he interviewed her the week before.

by Anonymousreply 49December 13, 2023 1:12 AM

R48, he has since recanted that.

by Anonymousreply 50December 13, 2023 1:31 AM

If you ever want to understand the phenomenon of conspiracy theories, just read almost any DL thread. This one is ripe with bullshit hot air and nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 51December 13, 2023 2:00 AM

He wouldn't stop his questions, which had his own agendas, and let Liz speak. I could see her impatience and finally she just had to tell him - LET ME ANSWER.

by Anonymousreply 52December 13, 2023 2:01 AM

He needs to be removed because he did a crap job telling people that pizzagate is fake. After his debunkment video, people believed it even more. Just look at the comments. Moloch will welcome him with open arms.

R50 so what?

by Anonymousreply 54December 13, 2023 2:57 AM

[quote]Three weeks of medical leave in a year is a lot, considering he's been off five months because of the strikes.

According to him, that's why his appendix burst. He insisted on taping a double episode (because they had a scheduled day off), even though he was already in pain in the morning, because he was conscious that between the strikes and the Covid he's hardly been on air lately. Obviously, he didn't know the pain was an appendix that might burst. It sounds like he got sepsis: he referred to "blood poisoning".

by Anonymousreply 55December 13, 2023 12:58 PM

R55 . . .

“A surprisingly common disease. The actress, Patty Duke aka Anna Pierce, died at the age of 69 from sepsis, a common and often misdiagnosed illness that kills 250,000 Americans a year.“

by Anonymousreply 56December 13, 2023 1:25 PM

Damn! I hope he gets well soon. Back when I was in school, a classmate almost died, and they caught the appendicitis just before it burst. It has nothing to do with drinking, OP.

by Anonymousreply 57December 13, 2023 1:50 PM

Nice try OP.

by Anonymousreply 58December 13, 2023 2:21 PM

[quote] He needs to be removed because he did a crap job telling people that pizzagate is fake. After his debunkment video, people believed it even more. Just look at the comments.

🙄 That’s absurd. First of all, it’s not his job to debunk insane conspiracy theories. He’s a COMEDIAN. But also, in the video clip he said multiple times that the Pizzagate nonsense was a lie. Plus, you can’t hold Colbert — who has spent the last six years expertly and devastatingly skewering tRump — liable because MAGAts are so stupid that in spite of a complete lack of evidence, they nevertheless believe there was a child sex ring operating out of Comet Ping Pong’s basement — a building that lacks a basement. Sorry, but their stupidity is not Colbert’s fault.

While he enjoys a drink, he’s never struck me as an alcoholic. He got Covid because he didn’t have time to get the latest shot before jetting off to LA. And he didn’t wear a mask on the plane, if I recall correctly. His wife, Evie, did get the shot, did wear a mask, and, oh, didn’t get Covid.

by Anonymousreply 59December 13, 2023 3:50 PM

THank you R59!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 60December 13, 2023 4:07 PM

R59 it was his job, otherwise we wouldn't have given him this task. Regardless of your opinion, he will be the next sacrifice that will usher in the anti christ.

by Anonymousreply 61December 13, 2023 10:06 PM

People on the DL are bat shit crazy

by Anonymousreply 62December 13, 2023 10:22 PM

You got it R62. Here we have a sane intelligent comedian and social/political observer. Intelligent, funny, and thoroughly grounded in common sense. As I’ve often said- DL crazies mirror the far right in believing, manufacturing and voicing batshit crazy stuff. Has the internet exposed a self destructive human trait or behavior. Much of the ludicrous blathering on this thread is every bit as crazy as far right nonsense. Its the same thing.

He was great during the Trump administration. His nightly take downs of Trump were hilarious.

But now he's an ass kisser for the current administration, and for me unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 68December 16, 2023 1:50 AM

So now Colbert has a target on his back. I'm a big fan of his. I have no problem with his perspective, in fact I share it. We have so many neutral opinionators on TC, it's refreshing that the Left has someone consistently funny and smart, too. YOu don't have to agree with him 100% of the time. But he is very good at what he does. If he isn't to your taste you can just scroll on by. Some of us like him.

The Colbert Report was genius. I miss that Stephen. But he’ll do a lot better if Trump comes back and he has an administration to oppose rather than cheerlead.

by Anonymousreply 71December 16, 2023 5:35 AM

He was a brave comedic genius back in the Bush years, now he's a toady and sell out.

I can remember when he performed at the White House Correspondents Dinner, and what he said was so fucking shocking and true that the media pretended, literally pretended, it didn't happen for several days. Down the memory hole.

It was completely amazing to watch at that time.

I love that old Colbert

R43 Jon Stewart is a hack compared to Colbert.

by Anonymousreply 73December 16, 2023 6:08 AM

I got out of the habit of watching him during Covid and can’t say I miss him now. I do like his wife

by Anonymousreply 74December 17, 2023 3:05 AM

Good thing about all these shows is that you can watch the parts you want when you want on You Tube. I've grown impatient with most shows now because I have gotten used to just cutting to the segment that interests me and to hell with the rest. I never watch Fallon. He seems kind of ridiculous. If Kimmel or Colbert or Seth Meyers have interesting guest I watch it.

by Anonymousreply 75December 17, 2023 3:10 AM

Did somebody call for a drunk?

by Anonymousreply 76December 17, 2023 3:19 AM

I love Fallon and his fake laugh the most

by Anonymousreply 77December 17, 2023 5:52 PM

R6 Oh honey you’re immune to Covid. You’ve had all kinds of virus dumped inside you. Your body’s been building immunity since you were 12.
