Lenny Kravitz on unwanted sexual encounter he had as teenager: 'I wasn't traumatized'

"Maybe somebody would say it should have been addressed and that it was, whatever, but that's the time it was."

Lenny Kravitz is speaking out about an unwanted sexual encounter he experienced as a teenager and what it taught him.

The “TK421” singer, who detailed the incident in his 2020 memoir, Let Love Rule, pushed back on a question about whether or not it could be considered sexual assault in an Esquire interview published Wednesday.

“It was an experience and a lesson,” Kravitz replied. “Everything doesn’t have to be so…”

The Grammy winner then shifted gears and noted the time period during which the encounter occurred. “I’m not saying that there aren’t things that deserve to be addressed — maybe somebody would say it should have been addressed and that it was, whatever, but that’s the time it was,” he said. “I lived, and I learned. I wasn’t traumatized.”

In his tell-all, Kravitz wrote that the incident took place when a family friend was watching him while his parents were out of town, per Esquire. The person invited friends over, one of whom came into the teenage Kravitz’s room, got in bed with him, and touched him.

It had a lasting effect on Kravitz and his thoughts on intimacy. “I wasn’t interested in convincing or coercing women,” he wrote in the book, per the outlet. “I’d been coerced myself and didn’t like it.”

Elsewhere in the new interview, Kravitz reflected on his past relationships and admitted that he hasn’t always remained faithful in them, explaining that he struggled with “being confident that this is the person for me, always thinking something else may be better.” While he said he understands that line of thinking was “part of the journey,” Kravitz acknowledged, “I put some people through some hard times."

The 59-year-old rocker, who is currently single, added that he’s open to marriage and having children again in the future. “I’ve grown enough. I’ve become stronger. I’ve become more disciplined,” he said of the possibility of tying the knot a second time. “I’ve become more open to be able to do so. But it’s been a very difficult thing for me to figure out.”

I assume he's referring to a female?

Why the ambiguity about the person's gender?

To be trans inclusive, Rose.

This is huge difference between GenX and GenZ.

GenX seems so much more laid back about sexual encounters.

Why does a 60yo man think he can or should start a new family?

by Anonymousreply 4November 30, 2023 8:00 AM

Has Lenny had a face refresh or two?

by Anonymousreply 5November 30, 2023 8:04 AM

Unfortunate he took after mom, though he appears to have had his skin lightened.

I seem to recall fro the trouser split that Lenny has tiny junk

by Anonymousreply 7November 30, 2023 8:12 AM

He's a hot guy, but the make-up, jewellery and lace shirt aren't doing it for Mr.

Seems like he's got it together, but not many famous people are faithful, it seems.

Looks like some filler in the cheekbones and some eyework. Face looks a little puffy, so maybe recently and it hasn't had time to settle? The eye makeup isn't helping him. He's starting to look like an old queen, desperately try to look youthful. It's a shame; he got his looks from his mother, and I always thought Roxie Roker was a very pretty lady.

He says it didn't do anything to him in the long run, but his outfits usually say something is off.

Johnny Depp had a garage sale.

by Anonymousreply 11November 30, 2023 9:05 AM

If it didn’t affect him, why did he write about it? That’s a pretty big step.

by Anonymousreply 12November 30, 2023 9:07 AM

He has Ted Kennedy/Jesse Jackson syndrome - no matter what he does, that noggin is getting fatter as he ages. The swollen face and choker distract from that wide head. I wonder if he has a pencil neck. He always had lovely shoulders.

He walked a tightrope with full disclosure- if it was a man that assulated him, absolutely anything he says could be misconstrued as homophobic or that he encouraged it somehow. I admire how he carefully poised it.

There would be uncomfortable follow up questions, he may identify as something other than straight and this may be him dipping his toes into a different kind of sexuality now that his kids are grown. I’ve always thought he was handsome, I’ve dated several Black and Blatino men ruled by strong family and religious obligations steeped into them since birth. Being gay isn’t an option, and they don’t take it seriously as a representation of who they are.

In this day and age, we shouldn’t be asking people to define themselves within a strict construct of sexuality anymore. His actions as an ally speak louder. I’m also going to say Lenny and I grew up during the AIDS crisis, so that would’ve kept the lid on any childhood shenanigans he might have had as well.

Lenny once designed fantastic wallpaper. Confirming to me he is likely bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 15November 30, 2023 9:37 AM

It's a pity he didn't become the superstar billionaire singer designer creative director, rather than Kanye.

by Anonymousreply 16November 30, 2023 9:39 AM

I was molested.

by Anonymousreply 17November 30, 2023 12:55 PM

R1. I have found in articles related to adult-underage sex partner/victim that if it was a hetro encounter they mention the other person's gender. If it was a gay encounter they don't. Or in this case Lenny could be protecting a publicly known person. But if that was the case he would not even talk about it.

If a teenage heterosexual male is molested by an older woman, it's "a learning experience". If the same teenager is molested by an older male, it's a crime and he's labeled "a victim of sexual assault".

by Anonymousreply 19November 30, 2023 3:55 PM

Was this during his Romeo Blue phase?

by Anonymousreply 20November 30, 2023 4:41 PM

I'm starting to think it was a guy he messed around with, R18.

by Anonymousreply 21November 30, 2023 5:06 PM

He's sending-out a dog whistle to his molester that it's time to renegotiate the non-disclosure agreement.

by Anonymousreply 22November 30, 2023 5:32 PM

He’s is still yummy looking and mama’s mussy would open like a lily in spring for him!

by Anonymousreply 23November 30, 2023 6:37 PM

The encounter with Elizabeth was brutal, but it might have caused Joe to realize he wants more out of life.

I’ve had three or four relationships that made my life much more difficult than it needed to be. I feel like I missed out on a lot of life because I was always taking care of someone.

Joe is still very young. He can use this bad experience to figure out what he wants.

I knew that severe Hendrix fetish grew out of some trauma... ...also, I was always interested that it was his homely lead guitarist that cooked up all the killer riffs. Lenny just got to pose as a Hendrix but hired himself the skillset he required.

by Anonymousreply 25December 4, 2023 3:33 PM

Also, pretty clearly not penetrated. Nothing violent about the encounter, probably felt good. No wonder he wasn't traumatized.

by Anonymousreply 26December 4, 2023 3:48 PM

Oh, please. That bitch loved it.

by Anonymousreply 27December 4, 2023 3:54 PM

I don't understand what he is talking about EVER. He is one of those musicians I am sad ever opened his mouth because he never has anything to say that doesn't reflect how self-absorbed, sheltered and uneducated he is.

by Anonymousreply 28December 4, 2023 4:04 PM

Lenny very earnestly explains how penis didn't make him fly away!

The creeper into little Lenny's bed must've said, "Let's have a Live Revolution!"
