Is The Color Purple musical expected to be a hit?

I noticed the commercial contends no singing. It looks like the are trying to hide the fact that it is a musical. (maybe because of what happened with the West Side Story remake.)

by Anonymousreply 70December 28, 2023 6:47 PM

OP wasn't the WSS story remake a musical like the original?

by Anonymousreply 1November 30, 2023 6:46 AM

No way!

by Anonymousreply 2November 30, 2023 6:47 AM

Yes r1 I meant that it flopped at the box office so maybe they don't want Color Purple seen as a musical too.

by Anonymousreply 3November 30, 2023 6:48 AM

Flop.

by Anonymousreply 4November 30, 2023 12:04 PM

No tracking on it yet so far?

by Anonymousreply 5November 30, 2023 7:17 PM

Musicals don’t make money. It will bomb.

by Anonymousreply 6November 30, 2023 7:31 PM

Pastoral and Patronizing

by Anonymousreply 7November 30, 2023 7:49 PM

R6, Les Mis and Greatest Showman and La La Land made money.

by Anonymousreply 8November 30, 2023 8:19 PM

But Color Purple will make no money because it lacks star power. Also, Fantasia is SO 2004!

by Anonymousreply 9November 30, 2023 8:21 PM

R8, that’s not the norm and not today. Musicals are historically hard to sell to audiences. “West Side Story” was one of the current-day victims.

The girl with the fish eyes who played Ariel in the massive Little Mermaid bomb doesn’t help matters.

by Anonymousreply 10November 30, 2023 8:24 PM

The reviews have been very positive from advance screenings. Movies don’t need stars to be hits today. I think it will have strong box office. Danielle Brooks is now the Supporting Actress front-runner.

by Anonymousreply 11November 30, 2023 8:25 PM

[Quote]Les Mis and Greatest Showman and La La Land made money.

but In the Heights and West Side Story lost big time

by Anonymousreply 12November 30, 2023 8:32 PM

R11, but it’s necessary for musicals, and it’s still not always sufficient.

by Anonymousreply 13November 30, 2023 9:11 PM

r11 frontrunner according to whom?

by Anonymousreply 14December 1, 2023 8:16 PM

R11=MT Statement

by Anonymousreply 15December 1, 2023 8:26 PM

What's an MT statement?

by Anonymousreply 16December 1, 2023 8:27 PM

R3: Why do you think they didn't show any of Mouseboy singing in the Wonka trailer?

by Anonymousreply 17December 1, 2023 8:28 PM

Who wants to see that ugly bible thumper play Celie?

by Anonymousreply 18December 1, 2023 8:28 PM

r2 - Uhhh...looks like a musical to me.

by Anonymousreply 19December 1, 2023 8:35 PM

and how does it look to everyone else R19?

by Anonymousreply 20December 1, 2023 8:41 PM

I'm not talking about the trailer at r2 I was talking about the TV commercials that are running. No singing whatsoever in those or at least in the one I saw.

by Anonymousreply 21December 1, 2023 8:45 PM

I never got in the original how Celie could kiss Shug right after she told her she sure is ugly. That would be a slight turn off for me. Is it like that way in the book?

by Anonymousreply 22December 1, 2023 8:48 PM

[quote] at least in the one I saw.

Just the one, dear?

by Anonymousreply 23December 1, 2023 8:52 PM

The finger snapping is redolent of the gangs in West Side Story (1961) The music including the background music sounds godawful

It looks good, r24. I think it will do just fine.

R25 =desperate publicist😰😰😰

by Anonymousreply 26December 1, 2023 9:26 PM

We shall see, r26.

by Anonymousreply 27December 1, 2023 9:30 PM

Meh. I love The Color of Purple for its twisted humor and story. And the book was more dramatic.

Turning it into a cheesy musical does nothing for me.

by Anonymousreply 28December 1, 2023 9:51 PM

R22 I think they fuck in the book.

by Anonymousreply 29December 1, 2023 9:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 30December 1, 2023 10:02 PM

the cast and the film doesn't seem period at all

by Anonymousreply 31December 1, 2023 10:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 33December 1, 2023 10:33 PM

Honestly none of the holiday movies look appealing - The Color Purple, Wonka, Aquaman 2, Ferrari.

by Anonymousreply 34December 2, 2023 2:14 AM

Will it beat CATS as the worst musical-turned-movie?

Godzilla has NEVER given a bad performance; he never phones it in. The fake American version with Matthew Broderick and Madison Square Garden was a fake - a disgrace to the very reputation of Godzilla. It was akin to putting Beanie into " Funny Girl."

by Anonymousreply 39December 2, 2023 1:24 PM

I escaped Godzilla when he attacked Brazil.

by Anonymousreply 40December 2, 2023 1:25 PM

Aquaman wins! Core audience of incel men represents the majority of holiday cinema ticket buyers.

by Anonymousreply 41December 2, 2023 4:46 PM

Can it be worse than Ma Rainy's Black Bottom?

by Anonymousreply 42December 2, 2023 6:26 PM

Can't wait to see Wanka

by Anonymousreply 43December 2, 2023 8:07 PM

I saw a preview screening and really enjoyed it. I thought the music enhanced the story (although they moved Miss Celie’s Blues to a different point in the movie and it didn’t seem as impactful but maybe that’s just me.) Danielle Brooks really steals the movie but all the performances are excellent.

I think it will do well but the one possible downside is that it sticks so close to Spielberg’s version that people who don’t like musicals might skip it and just rewatch the original.

by Anonymousreply 44December 2, 2023 9:19 PM

The movie version of the Mean Girls musical didn’t include music either.

OP - " I noticed the commercial contends no singing."

The commercial argues that there is no singing in the movie?

Some of you can't tell us apart...

Fantasia "bible-thumped" her way to headline the Long Beach Pride festival several years ago when she was still a platinum-selling recording artist.

by Anonymousreply 48December 11, 2023 5:11 PM

Wait, Wonka is a musical?

by Anonymousreply 49December 11, 2023 5:11 PM

It will do well I bet. A Christmas release date is where it's at. I went to the multiplex a couple times on Christmas evening and everything was sold out. I remember suffering through LaLa Land the year it came out because there were no seats for anything else. Oprah's fans alone will make it a semi-hit at least.

Sorry, but the viewing public is tired of seeing black people, especially in a musical remake of an old, very good movie.

by Anonymousreply 55December 22, 2023 1:31 PM

It's the musical that has everything: incest, rape, racism and abuse. How can it miss!

R3 But I feel like everyone knows West Side Story is a musical even the Gen Z audience the remake intended to attract. It is perhaps one of the most famous musicals of all time.

by Anonymousreply 59December 26, 2023 8:32 AM

Nobody in LaLa Land is bigger than Taraji P Henson. Ryan Hosling is huge now but he was not bigger than Taraji P Henson when LaLa Land came out.

by Anonymousreply 60December 26, 2023 8:34 AM

It has an 88 rating on rotten tomatoes. I likely will wait for streaming. I often enjoy reading the bad reviews of films that get strong critical praise just to view an alternate point of view. The bad review I read contended it could perhaps be true that Alice Walker’s novel is simply un-filmable.

Barack Obama said in 2008 that marriage is between one man and one woman yet hold Fantasia Burrino’s feet to the fire, a poor non educated black woman who used poor words despite bettering herself attending pride events and supporting gay right in recent years.

Its slip is showing.

⬇️Warner Bros.' musical, The Color Purple, which was brilliant out of the gate on Christmas Day with an $18.15M gross, boosted by group sales, continues to fall, with Wednesday down 45% from Tuesday to $3.9M at 3,152 theaters

From #1 on Monday to #4 on Wednesday

by Anonymousreply 68December 28, 2023 6:15 PM

OP expectation vs reality

To be considered a success, The Color Purple needs to make $200 million at the box office, but it is expected to surpass that with its high critics score, positive reviews, and star-studded cast.
