Now, I find it rather amazing, because I happen to believe that Henry Kissinger was one of the most destructive secretaries of state in the modern history of this country. I am proud to say that Henry Kissinger is not my friend. I will not take advice from Henry Kissinger. And in fact, Kissinger’s actions in Cambodia, when the United States bombed that country, overthrew Prince Sihanouk, created the instability for Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge to come in, who then butchered some 3 million innocent people, one of the worst genocides in the history of the world. So count me in as somebody who will not be listening to Henry Kissinger." - Bernie Sanders

WAR CRIMINAL KISSINGER DEAD AT 100
by Anonymous | reply 129 | November 30, 2023 1:10 PM |
I don't know anything about Henry Kissinger, except for maybe his name and that he worked for Richard Nixon.
But I haven't heard a peep about him being a "butcher" or a "war criminal."
Because the media never really reported this.
So why are they calling him out all of a sudden, and not while he was alive??
(PS, I believe everything that is being said about him, bu I also find it typical of the media that there wasn't a mention of what a horrible person he was, until after he died. Kind of cowardly, if you ask me.)
by Anonymous | reply 130 | November 30, 2023 2:02 PM |
R130 The same thing is happening with George Bush. The media is allowing his 'rehabilitation' though he remains a disgusting war criminal. He led the U.S. into a war on false pretenses which killed thousands of Iraqis and 4000 U.S. servicemen.
There is ample evidence that he knew Iraq was not a security threat:
In President Bush’s first speech to the nation, on October 7, 2002, from Cincinnati, he told the American people that Saddam Hussein was great danger to our nation, either by Hussein attacking us with WMDs, or by giving these weapons to a terrorist group to do so. Bush said this attack could happen on “any given day,” meaning that the threat was imminent. The only big problem for Bush in a trial is that on October 1, just six days earlier, the CIA sent Bush its 2002 National Intelligence Estimate, a classified, top-secret report, that represented the consensus opinion of all sixteen US intelligence agencies on the issue of whether or not Hussein was an imminent threat to the security of this country. On page 8, it clearly and unequivocally says… that Hussein was not an imminent threat to the security of this country; that he would only be a threat to us if he feared that America was about to attack him. So we know–not think, but know–that when George Bush told the nation on the evening of October 7, 2002, that Saddam Hussein was an imminent threat to the security of the nation, he was telling millions of unsuspecting Americans the exact opposite of what his own CIA was telling him. Even if we have nothing else at all, this alone shows that Bush took this nation to war on a terrible lie, and therefore all the killings of American soldiers in Iraq were unlawful killings and therefore murder
by Anonymous | reply 131 | November 30, 2023 2:29 PM |
The fact that since the late 1960s US presidents were listening to and adopting the ideas of psychopaths like Henry Kissinger and Dick Cheney that were tantamount to war crimes is what diminished the US legacy in the view of the rest of the world.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | November 30, 2023 2:31 PM |
R130, if you really "don't know anything about Henry Kissinger, except for maybe his name and that he worked for Richard Nixon," then you obviously haven't been paying attention to news media over the past decades, so how would you know they haven't made "a peep about him being a 'butcher' or a 'war criminal'"? There's been plenty of harsh criticism of Kissinger in the press (along with too much undeserved respect, of course).
by Anonymous | reply 133 | November 30, 2023 2:39 PM |

Kissinger was their heir and totally embraced the blueprint they had laid out. Republicans have been horrible people for a long time.

I was watching a discussion show last night and it was revealed that according to Yale University historian Greg Grandin, who wrote a biography on Kissinger called " Kissinger's Shadow" 2015;
"from 1969 to 1976, the direct decisions made by Kissinger with his signature on the decisions/directives - led to the [bold]death of 3 million to 4 million people[/bold] around the world".
Kissinger was completely uninterested in the deaths of cannon fodder civilians and was only focussed on the outcome he wanted - regardless of how many other serious and ongoing issues the outcome he wanted caused.
And that he did EVERYTHING he could to hide those deaths which were a direct result of his decisions from Congress and the American people - and therefore world.
I would go so far to say that Kissinger has been greatly responsible for much of the anti-American sentiment from around the world in the last 50 years.
His is not a legacy to be proud of or to be held up as something to be revered. He was one of the most shameful people in recent American history.
Hope he burns in hell.

It was on ABC's The Drum yesterday R154 (Australian version of BBC). Not sure if you can watch but I've linked yesterday's episode.
Grandin's research and facts from his book were mentioned as they were discussing Kissinger. The discussion on Kissinger begins at 20.00.

R154 - I was just watching today's PBS NewsHour and they did a piece on Kissinger and Greg Grandin was interviewed about Kissinger for the story if you're interested. The Kissinger part begins at 23. 20 at the link.

The media, then as now, figuratively absolved Kissinger of any crimes against humanity because he became Show-Biz-Adjacent.

[quote]His legacy was diminished during his lifetime. Kissinger probably didn't give a fuck but he was outed and condemned as a blood thirsty war criminal. Total scum.
His legacy was diminished while he served in the Cabinet. We knew he was a blood thirsty war criminal and total scum at the time.

Younger DLers - under 60, maybe - might not know how much the right-wingers of the '70s hated Kissinger.

That may be part of it (although the Rocky animus was more of a '60s thing), R161, but they most particularly did not like his detente policy. He was too much of an appeaser for their tastes.

You breathed. You took up space. You bombed Cambodia.

If there's one lesson to take from Henry Kissinger's life, it's to strive to live in a way that means the reaction to your death will be the opposite of the public reaction to his.

Unfortunately, in the circles he traveled, and the world he inhabited he will be lauded. Those people are in another world altogether. And he was their darling boy.
